((Bridge - USS Albion))

::It felt like the air on the bridge had been drained to a dry point; like a desert without enough oxygen to sustain the entire party, and everyone was gasping for breath while trying to stay calm.

The talk going around unsettled Sal. They had, in the briefing only a few hours ago discussed the strengths and weaknesses the Albion had over the Stormcrow; and one thing was made clear - The Stormcrow far outclassed the Albion in torpedoes, while the Excelsior class clearly trumped with phasers.

So why did the Albion show inventory it clearly didn't have? The easy answer was a malfunction; and while there was extensive damage to the ship, Sal admitted he didn't know enough about engineering to make a clear call on whether a malfunction could cause that sort of information. Coupled with a stuck torpedo tube, it was a worrisome set of coincidences that piled up to create a frustrating mystery.

The only fact they did know was that the Albion had fired the fatal blow. Even if there was outside interference, it didn't take away the fact that the Stormcrow's shields were dropped and her meaty underbelly exposed on his order - and the successive shots.

So much for any hope of a naive quiet ride to captaincy. For a counselor and a diplomat, his first outing while sitting in the center seat had turned out surprisingly bloody.::

Tatash: Well then I don't know what the hell is happening ::he snarled, the pain crossed with these bizzare questions appearing doing little more then spiking his temper:: The Stormcrow was vulnerable, I picked a Quantum Torpedo and pulled the trigger.

Falcon: ?

West: Or did it? could this have been some kind of thoron beams and sensor ghost? The Stormcrow warping away just in time?

Nira: That is unlikely. ::Fiddling with her console:: Was the Stormcrow fitted with quantum torpedoes? The most likely explanation would be that our attack set off one of theirs.

::Sal nodded, about ready to agree with Nira's assessment when a commline screech distracted his attention from science to the viewscreen. His eyes went wide.

Haz Arrhimen was calling.::

Taybrim: Lieutenant Trel'lis, I need your team on the bridge right now. We have a call coming in from Arrhimen.

Trel'lis: On our way!

Broi: With you Lieutenant.

Zinna: ?

::Sal moved with purpose towards the center of the bridge, taking a firm, commanding stance - one that drew his posture upwards and spread his shoulders to appear more imposing than his modest frame usually portrayed.::

Taybrim: Put him on screen. ::The screen came to a whitewash of static, slowly fading to a visible form:: Stormcrow, this is Commander Sal Taybrim of the USS Albion--

::A man that held his gravitas even though a bleeding temple and a insane twitch in his eye interrupted with a passion that rolled through the airwaves.::

Arrhimen: PROOF.... ::Pointing:: Proof I was right. I was trying to push you out of the way of a hidden Romulan Predator.

Taybrim: What? ::he furrowed his brows:: Captain Arrhimen, you attacked us...

Arrhimen: Dont be a fool, Commander Taybrim. Open your eyes; you did not destroy the Stormcrow. With all due respect, your torpedo tubes are just too small and my knowledge gave me a greater battlefield advantage. The Stormcrow was destroyed by what we call target A.2, a hidden Romulan ship.

::Sal's jaw set his mouth in a hard, unhappy line. He didn't know what was worse - giving an order that ended up in the near-complete destruction of a Starfleet ship or being belittled by a raving officer that he was, in fact, too impotent to destroy said ship.

And yet he managed to keep a diplomatic visage.::

Taybrim: Do you have proof?

Arrhimen: What is the old saying captain. ::Grinning:: The proof is in the pudding? Well scan my ship, what is left of her if you need more proof I will give it to you face to face

Taybrim: ::he held up a hand:: How many of you crew are on the lifeboats?
Arrhimen: Three here on the bridge with me and on life boat has one and the other has two, seven total Cap...ten’... ::Haz extended the word Captain and let it hang in the air. He looked at Sal with disgust.::

::Three boats, only seven people. That was a tiny handful, even for a crew of only 24.::

Taybrim: ::His voice was tense, cautious:: There's no readings of a warbird any closer than a half hour at full warp. If you have proof, Captain, we can discuss it. We're sending relief shuttles and we'll check the remains if the Stormcrow for survivors.

Arrhimen: Very well, we are Standing by, I will see you in your ready room. Haz out. =/\=

::Sal stood very still for a long few moments, letting that conversation percolate in his brain for a good long while. Arrhimen seemed to view the destruction of the Stormcrow as a niggling setback which either meant he had a plan, he was in shock and hadn't admitted the loss to himself yet - or he was insane.

And, quite honestly any or all of those were possible.::

Taybrim: ::Turning towards the diplomatic trio:: Is he lying?

Trel'lis: Not entirely. It is possible there is a hidden, cloaked vessel, in the area. What’s undetermined is *whose* side that ship was on, or if it was even Romulan.

Broi: I tend to agree with the Lieutenant since we were not able to link up which if we had, might have caught the sense of them.

Zinna

Taybrim: ::takes in a breath:: It ... it's a possibility. The Stormcrow was destroyed unusually quickly, even if we got a lucky shot.

::He glanced around the bridge, feeling lightheaded. What if Arrhimen had been correct?

No, he couldn't start thinking like that. Arrhimen was here to commit an act of war, and they had prevented that - with a terrible outcome, but still they had prevented that, right?

Still, the blood of 17 Starfleet officers was on their hands...::

Trel'lis: It’s possible he is simply using that ‘other ship’ as a ‘cover’ after realizing his ship was *this* badly damaged, et cetera. A closer proximity to Arrhimen, would get *me* a better ‘read’, to be honest.

Broi: is too arrogant to make up something this elaborate. I have to think a talk with him will reveal if he is lying.

Zinna: ?

Taybrim: I want you to go to the docking area, meet with the security team that is handling Arrhimen and talk to him. Get a read on him. I need to know if he's lying or if there is a ship out there.

Trel'lis: Understood. That can be achieved, once we’re face to face.

Broi: Aye sir

Zinna: ?

::The diplomatic trio headed for the turbolift, as Sal turned and focused back on the officers remaining on the bridge. For a mission Starfleet had originally considered a 'milk run,' it had quickly become a soured milk mess.::

Taybrim: Ensign Nira, scan the Stormcrow's saucer section - are there any survivors?

Nira: Right away, sir. ::She worked quickly, coming back with a report so quickly that the bridge crew didn;t have much time to dwell on darker thoughts:: This is odd... ::She said, cocking her head slightly to the side:: Sir, I'm reading around...sixty two life forms aboard the saucer.

Taybrim: How can there be so many? There were only supposed to be 24 crew onboard the Stormcrow total?

Nira: I can only assume that captain Arrhimen wasn't entirely wrong...

West: If there is a ship out there she is cloaked, and we did not record a ship decloaking to fire, so if there is a ship it can fire while cloaked.

::Possibly - or they didn't fire at all. All they had to do was monitor, or perhaps use their own deflectors to weaken the Stormcrow, or overload the Stormcrow's own torpedoes. Who knew?

Well, the Romulans knew if it was the Romulans out there. Sal frowned. Too many questions, and still potential survivors over on the Stormcrow meant he had to send a team. Fortunately he had teams already prepared. It wasn't quite the same mission - instead of boarding the Stormcrow to knock down Arrhimen, it would be to engage the Romulans; but he had faith in Stevens and Andersen to be able to adapt.::

Taybrim: =/\= Taybrim to Stevens and Andersen. Are your teams ready to board the Stormcrow? =/\=

Stevens/Andersen: =/\= ?

Taybrim: =/\= I realize she's destroyed, but her saucer section is crawling with unidentified lifeforms - and quite possibly survivors. I want you to retrieve the survivors. =/\=

Stevens/Andersen: =/\= ?

Taybrim: =/\= There's plenty an adversary could gut from the Stormcrow's computers if they had the chance - I don't want to give anyone that chance.=/\= ::he paused:: =/\= Life support is at a minimum, take respirators or EV suits. =/\=

Stevens/Andersen: =/\= ?

Taybrim: =/\= Transporters are back online, but at a minimum of power. Bring viridium patches so we can locate you, transport enhancer beacons and bean directly to the bridge. =/\=

Stevens/Andersen: =/\= ?

::As the line closed, Sal turned and face the rest of the bridge, putting a hand to his temples as if to steady himself and clear his own thoughts from the onslaught of information whirling around him::

Taybrim: I don't know what Arrhimen had stored in the Stormcrow's computer, but whatever that is, we need to protect it and bring it back with us rather than leaving it in Romulan territory. Can we access his mainframe?

Nira: It's possible, sir, but it would probably take time. I believe the safest course of action would be to destroy it.

West: I have a scan running for it now, I am also reading 15 sections of the Stormcrow hull that still has life support and are intact but I can't get a clear scan on them

Vondaryan: If we get closer, we should be able to perform a computer link with the Stormcrow. I'll begin work on that.

Tatash: I'm running a diagnostic on the torpedo system, this doesn't make any damned sense.

Taybrim: ::He nodded slowly, considering the advice:: Falcon, bring us alongside the Stormcrow's saucer. If we still have tractor, bring her close enough to kiss her, but not in the bed if you catch my drift.

Falcon: ?

Taybrim: ::Back towards the think tank:: And any word on sensors with our unknown, possible ship?

West: Still looking sir, but our scanners and computers are on dial up at the moment.

Nira: Maybe, sir. I have detected a small gravimetric anomaly in the field. I can't resolve much detail at this time, but there definitely could be a ship in there. That might even explain the anomaly we saw earlier as we entered the field. ::She paused.:: It is possible the Romulans have a scout ship shadowing us, or the Stormcrow.

Vondaryan: I'd like to look at those scans, Ensign. ::He moved over toward her station.:: If the Romulans have developed improved cloaking technology, I want to know about it.

::Sal nodded agreement. If the Romulans had improved their cloak it could be a terrible weapon to use against the Federation. Then again, with the nebula around, it was equally likely that they had simply modified the cloak to be particularly effective in this specific area.

Worse, the idea that they were being watched by a hidden lurker was unsettling. They had no idea if it was a 40-man scout ship or a massive D'Deridex lingering in the shadows. So far there had been no signs of hostility from any potentially hidden ship; but they also didn't know what trigger might set them off. It was like walking through a minefield, hoping with every step that you didn't get blown up.::

Whittaker: "I thought I'd never be more happy to see your face."

::Sal's reverie was broken by Whittaker's bright arrival. Whittaker and Anders... Sal was hoping that meant good news where the overload was concerned.

Well, it had to be good news, right? Far more than four minutes had passed and they hadn't blown up yet. At least not that he was aware of.::

Tatash: I'm guessing the lift's broke then, you alright? ::He grunted, reaching down and offering the Engineer a hand out::

Whittaker: "I'm fine, but Lieutenant Commander Anders is injured. He needs a medkit."

Malcolm: ?

Tatash: Doctor, I think I've stopped leaking now ::he muttered to the Doctor behind him, still waving one of those medical magic wands over his wounded back::

Anders: No I am good, Nurse Whittaker did a great job at patching me up. ::Smiling::

Whittaker: "Don't listen to him." :: he motioned to the Risian's hands :: "Under those makeshift bandages are some rather gruesome burns."

Malcolm: ?

Anders: No really I am sure there are far worse off people than me Lt. Whittaker.

Whittaker: :: smirking :: "Don't argue with me." :: he turned to face Taybrim, comporting himself accordingly :: "Good to see you made it through the fire sir."

Taybrim: In one piece. ::he gave a nod and a reserved smile:: Good to see you both are safe. ::Pause:: How's the Albion faring?

Whittaker: "Most systems are offline or malfunctioning. We have maneuvering thrusters, internal and external phasers as well as phasers. Breach forcefields are holding for now- - but Stormcrow caused a very nasty breach in main engineering. It took out the starboard sections before it." :: beat :: "Peters is in charge down there now. I've been assisting Lieutenant Commander Anders with a defective pulse wave torpedo."

Anders: That turned out to be a dud by the way.

Taybrim: ::He let out a breath of relief.:: That's one spot of good news.

::He glanced downwards at Anders' hands - it appeared it hadn't been the smoothest mission; though Sal tamped down his curiosity to focus on other issues. As Tatash, Whittaker, Anders and Doctor Malcolm spoke his own commline flashed an alert::

Tarsa: =/\= Chief Tarsa to bridge. Captain Arrhimen requests audience with the Commander. =/\=

::Sal's jaw set in an uncomfortable clench. He wanted Arrhimen in the brig. His gut told him the man was dangerous and unhinged. However Starfleet privilege granted Arrhimen to speak to a fellow commanding officer face to face.

He tensed, wavering between what he considered the safe (though arguably cowardly) decision, and the more dangerous decision. Arrhimen was still a Starfleet captain, and he owed the man the respect of hearing him out.::

Taybrim: =/\= Have security escort him to the ready room. Have the diplomatic team accompany.=/\= ::He didn't outright it, but his tone clearly said 'I don't trust him'::

Tarsa: =/\= Will do. =/\=

::Sal shook his head, loathing to tear himself away from the bridge at a time like this, but he was the one who Arrhimen wanted to speak to. And he was the one representing the Albion as CO. He had to do it.::

Taybrim: West, I want you to co-ordinate with Stevens and Andersen over the commline. Get any survivors to sickbay, and give them any support they need.

West: ?

Taybrim: Nira, Vondaryan, Falcon - work on staying close to the Stormcrow, and getting as much information from their computers as you can.

Nira/Vondaryan/Falcon: ?

Taybrim: Yes, prepare to find and destroy the remaining bits of the Stormcrow. If we can't bring it back with us, we need to make sure se can't fall into Romulan hands.

Nira/Vondaryan/Falcon: ?

Taybrim: I'll be in the ready room... Arrhimen will be my... guest. ::From his expression he was none too happy with that - wary, worried, and a bit disgusted. Certainly not happy.

Bridge: ?
