::She inclined her head at his words, her eyebrows raising.::

REYNOLDS: I'm not asking, Jansen. I'm telling.

ORREY: I understand the decision, dare I say I even agree with it to an extent… my problem comes from your criteria of my partner and my own desire to live as a private individual.

::Her expression finally shifted, and it was to one of scepticism.::

REYNOLDS: My criteria are about as loose as they can be. I'm letting you choose, when I could have assigned someone, or even denied you permission to do it at all.

ORREY: Even the CSO has some lack of fulfilment in the biology field. Through her own admission to me. I have a major issue with involving more people in this than I feel comfortable with, because we are already beyond the number I had in mind. oO Ah Ha! Oo Unless of course...you would like to take the place of a lab partner. Not only would you meet your requirements it would also provide you with an exacting set of eyes on the data that can prevent the dangers you are afraid of.

::The console screen on her desk started to chirp. Starfleet Intelligence's emblem was large and proud on the monitor, the words "incoming message" blinking on and off underneath it. She frowned, tapped a few buttons and silenced it, then answered him with a quick shake of her head.::

REYNOLDS: I've got doctorates in physics, engineering and cryptography -- there's a distinct lack of anything remotely organic in that mix. If Sevo's not qualified, I'm certainly not.

ORREY: Well then, I will have to train Sevo up. I don't want this going any further.

REYNOLDS: ::She dipped her head in an agreeable nod, her tone of voice softening.:: As long as they're willing, the choice of partner is yours.

ORREY: I will not disappoint your trust Captain. If that is all, I have some things to tidy up in Sickbay before I begin my new job.

REYNOLDS: Just don't leave me with egg on my face, Jansen. Especially since I have this for you.

::She reached for a small cuboid sat by a neat pile of PADDs on the side of her desk, and slid it across the desk toward him. Jansen looked at the little rosewood box for a long time without touching it before he looked up at her.::

ORREY: You’re kidding…

REYNOLDS: ::She grinned at him.:: That would be mean of me, wouldn't it? It's genuine, and you've earned it. You've done a lot of good work in sickbay, and I've no doubt you'll do the same in counselling.

ORREY: ::Jansen picked up the box and cracked it open with a smile as he looked at the half pip inside with quiet reverence before looking at his old friend.:: I bet I will.

REYNOLDS: I've got your back, but don't lose your head, okay? And let me know how things are going.

ORREY: A mutual feeling that is.

REYNOLDS: Right then, that's everything. ::She smiled and leaned back in her chair.:: Dismissed, *Lieutenant*.

ORREY: ::Jansen stood up and nodded his head snapping to attention.:: Aye, Sir.

::As Jansen left the ready room, she returned her attention to the screen on her desk, accepting the waiting call. He caught only a greeting as the doors hissed shut behind him, and he crossed the bridge quietly to the turbolift. There, he giddily opened the box, placing the half pip on his collar and started planning how to redecorate his new office.::
