(( Sickbay, USS Gorkon ))

Ayiana had just arrived in Sickbay following the mission down to the mining tunnels. She was still covered in grime, sweat, and dirt. She smelled worse than a Klingon after a hunt, and was coughing frequently; hopefully it was just dust in her lungs and not something more...mycelial. Nurse Franklin had ushered her over to a biobed and done preliminary scans. Soon after, Lt. Loxley popped out from a back room in a fresh uniform. Lucky him.

Sevo: So, Doc, how are you feeling? A little gray?

Surprisingly, Loxley actually chuckled at her quip.

Loxley: Aye, something like that, Commander.

Sevo: Sorry, bad humor. Helps me cope with stressful situations. But seriously, how are we doing? I’m kind of attached to my spots.

Loxley: No need to apologize. "Humour is the best medicine", as they say. I mean, that's clearly balls. Drugs are usually the best medicine, but I see where they were going with that.

Loxley paused, smiling at Ayiana as Franklin gave him her results.

Loxley: Anyway.... you're in much the same condition as me by the looks of things. There's evidence of spore contamination, but on a small scale and your immune system is doing a great job of getting rid of them, so no need to stick either of us under a stasis field. I'll give you a little immuno-booster to help out. ::he scrolled down the page before giving a satisfied nod:: And there's no indication of any reaction with the Sevo symbiont at all.

Ayiana let out a sigh of relief she didn’t know she was holding. It had completely slipped past her about her Symbiont. She just sort of thought of the two of them as one entity most of the time.

Sevo: That’s a relief to hear.

Loxley: ::mostly to himself:: I wonder what would have happened if they'd tried to convert a joined Trill into... one of them. Oh! I'm sorry, Commander, probably not something you'd really want to think about.

It was actually a fascinating thought experiment, one she would be glad to think about in a few decades.

Sevo: It’s an interesting question. We have slightly higher immune systems compared to most species since we, y’know, explicitly implant a foreign organism into our bodies. But as to what would happen to the symbiont itself? I have no idea. I’m no biologist, but I haven’t heard of anything as aggressive as those spores, aside from Borg nanites, maybe.

Loxley: I can't deny, their biology is pretty incredible. Reproducing by turning other species into, basically, fungus. Ah yes, would you mind if I took a blood sample, too? I was going to add them to the file for when we start to research the spores.

Ayiana blinked for a moment, collecting her thoughts. Then she rolled up her dirty and torn sleeve.

Sevo: Just a little off the top.

Loxley: Thank you, Commander, I…

The Doctor was interrupted by the sound of the sickbay doors opening again. Counselor Fortune, Ensign Shryn, and an unknown Klingon in Starfleet uniform walked in. Judging by the state of *their* uniforms, their expedition seemed equally harrowing.

Loxley: Corliss!

Sevo: Had fun?

Fortune/Shryn/Tulosten: responses

Seemingly forgotten about Ayiana, though more than likely done with his administrations, Loxley quickly moved over to the new throng of patients.

Loxley: How are you? What happened? ::he looked down:: And why aren't you wearing any shoes?

Ayiana peered down and looked; indeed, Corliss was walking around in her socks. Did she get stuck in quicksand or something?

Sevo: You look as bad as us. :: She nodded her head towards the Klingon. :: Who’s the big guy?

Fortune/Shryn/Tulosten: responses

Sevo: Pleasure to meet you, Lieutenant Tulosten.

Fortune/Shryn/Tulosten: responses

Sevo: We met aliens who reproduced by infecting people with spores, changing their DNA. What’s your story?

It was no laughing matter, and she probably shouldn’t be joking at a time like this, but humor was the best way Ayiana found to deflate a heavy situation or bleed off anxiety. Swapping mission stories was always fun, anyway.
