((Deck 14: Chief Intelligence Officer's Office, Deep Space 285 ))
Lisero: Thank you for being on time. ::pauses:: I'd welcome you, but this briefing will need to be brief, so let me thank you first for being on time. I want to remind you :: her eyes swept the crew:: that this information is to be considered Secret, and subject to the standard penalties for revealing it. ::she paused, for emphasis, before calling up a diagram of the virus behind her.::
Saavei: Understood, sir.
Nakamura: ?
Stanford: ?
Lisero: This is what the Doyle ran across on the planet. With no formal name, the only reference for it is the sample number, which is K-35C9delta. It is a virus that attacks enzymes and dissolves them, effectively killing any advanced life. From some of the data forwarded to me, only single cellular organisms could be expected to survive.
Nakamura: ?
Stanford: I agree with Nakamura. Why would this be hid under secrecy? I would think that Starfleet would want to warn the sector of K-35C9delta.
Lisero: Excellent question. The reason for the secrecy is that this virus was designed and built by Starfleet in 2373.
Nakamura: ?
Stanford: Why in God's name would Starfleet create such a deadly agent, Sir? This doesn't make an sense.
Lisero: It was originally meant to equalize the massive advantage that the Jem'Hadar gave the Dominion. The problem is they could never stop it from attacking all life. From what I can tell, despite it being slated for destruction in 2375, someone in Command deemed it too important to destroy.
Nakamura: ?
Stanford: What is the mortality rate for this bio agent?
Lisero: The fatality rate for this is 100%. The only saving grace is that a virus this complex requires something to spread it, since it could not stay airborne for long. The problem is that they had several nanoengineers on staff, and came up with a system to spread it. We are reasonably sure from what little data the Doyle forwarded that the entire colony of Omicron Herculis was destroyed by this virus. More than likely the entire biosphere was also annihilated.
Nakamura: ?
Stanford: An entire biosphere....?
Saavei: If I may, sir, the Jem'Hadar were a genetically engineered species. Was there any data showing that K-35C9delta did any damage to that species?
Lisero: Yes, although it was more of a "placed on test planet with animal life, nothing survived" test. No combat testing was ever done since initial testing never overtook the distribution problem, and a bioagent capable of devastating biospheres was still outlawed even with the relaxed interpertaiton of the various treaties during the Dominion War.
Saavei: And in regards to Omicron Herculis. What were the species that inhabited that colony?
Lisero: Humans, some Andorians, Bajorans, and one Brikar. It was a mixed colony.
Nakamura: ?
Saavei: What if we were to create genetically engineered cells? Would the virus move to attack those cells if the specimen were open for infected crewmembers to come in contact with?
Lisero: As I understand it, it attacks cells directly, so you'd have to do something pretty clever.
Nakamura: ?
Stanford: Stanford: :: Looking up from her PADD. :: By the looks at this agent, its achilles heel is the fact of its short life span. Without the nano technology it could be rendered inert.
Nakamura: ?
Lisero: That's a good starting point. I'd like to see you all again at say.. 1800 hrs to see what we've come up with. I'll forward additional data from the Doyle as it becomes available. It seems one of the science analysts was able to come up with something to reverse the agent in humanoids, but there's some hold up with communications in decrypting that part of the transmisison. Dismissed.
:: Lisero returned to her work as the three went to the labs. She had to file reports on this, and the general status of the sector. Her eyes were raised when an alert from Cygnet came out.::
oO .. That's the bio agent. The terrorist placed them there? I wonder if they .. no, it looks like their security force.. Oo ::Chanastya tried to access the secure net, and then was dismayed to find it was sealed even above her access level. ::
oO Codeword clearence. By.. Admiral Karth.. Oo ::Chanastya .. paused. Karth was Starfleet Command, but never in Intelligence. And .. wasn't he assigned to the Cygnet system during the Dominion War? ::
oO Looks like I'll be able to add a bit to my report. Maybe even get him in some hot water. Oo ::Chanastya had never had much respect for Admirals who tried to use Intelligence to hide their mistakes and bad decisions, and she would be dammed to have this hidden because it was likely to cost him his job. As it was, the Cygnetian press had already picked it up, and some of the newer data analysts were flagging articles for her attention. The government was in a panic, and it was more than likely the spark needed to trigger the reform that had been likely for a while. ::
Lisero: =/\= Lisero to Faranster. An alert has been forwarded from Cygnet to us. They found examples of our biovirus and an advanced distribution mechanism on Cygnet XIV. They don't know the culprit, but from the similiarty of examples, I would bet it's the same one that attacked Omicron Herculis. Thankfully, they were able to stop the distribution before anyone could get hurt. =/\=
Faranster: =/\= ?
Lisero: =/\= Ah.. they haven't asked for extradition, but given the articles and some of the incidents.. I'm not entirely sure the government will survive in it's current form. It does seem that with this news, articles about the original gag order are getting out, as well as the fact that it was a single person in Starfleet who was asked to investigate. We're going to get some questions about that, and I'd suggest talking to the PR adjunct about our statement.. Sorry to spring this on you, sir. =/\=
Faranster: =/\= ?
Lisero: =/\= They asked.. well, that explains the memo James sent me. No, her identity hasn't been released yet. Acknowledged. Lisero out. =/\=
((Time skip, 1800 hrs ))
:: Chanastya had arranged for there to be some various refreshments and food available. This was half out of courtsey, and half because she had been drinking from a very tall mug of a particular drink from Tandar Prime. Possibly like the rest of them, she had been on-shift from about 0900 hrs. ::
Lisero: Thank you for showing up. Hopefully this will be the last meeting, and we can pick this up tomorrow after this briefing. The Doyle is en-route, and should be back early tomorrow. We've gotten some additional intelligence from Cygnet, where a terrorist had planned to potentially unleash the bio-agent there. ::She brings up diagrams of the spreading mechanisms.:: It was apparently a satellite in orbit relaying a signal to devices on the planet. I've made the relevant scan data from the Doyle available to you, and with a Luna-class's sensors, they should be able to pick out the signal - potentially. How has progress been on your end?
