Thanks for the announcement from TDIL.

 

CDAC-TDIL has been working hard for so long but it is not reaching the users.

If someone writes or puts a video of usefulness of these tools, with pointers, it will be useful.

 

In Sanskrit Tools, a link to "A reader for Sankshepa RaamaayaNam with hindi and English translation is now available in e-book format "

to sanskrit.uohyd.ernet.in is missing.
 

OCR development requires login but has guest access.

I tried OCR online at

http://tdil-dc.in/index.php?lang=en

Uploaded a PNG iamge (attached).  It allows selecting the portion but not sure how it works.

Used "Run OCR" but the "waiting" scroll indicator on the right keeps moving,

after a while I clicked on the indicator and it opened a page with editor keyboard.

The OCR was not reliable, image attached, text below.

I know that shrI vipin kumar tried their OCR product in Aug 2016, but I was wondering if he or some other windows user might test and report on the OCR tools available at http://www.tdil-dc.in/index.php?option=com_download&task=viewtoolsbyParam&categoryname=General%20Tools&lang=en ?

There are some other interesting apps available there - mostly targetted at Windows and Android.

I tried the OCR for Hindi briefly.

A single page with Hindi alphabet in Mangal font was recognized correctly. 

A multi-page tiff gave error after processing for a while. 

The program goes through noise cleaning, spell checking, etc. Not sure if  can be turned off.

Even the single page ocr took a while, though I didn't time it.

For freeware OCR solutions with GUI for Indic languages, I still think that gimagereader and vietocr are good options with tesseract LSTM engine.
