Dear Group,

Prior to the recitation of स्तोत्रs, phrases such as ह्रां अंगुष्ठाभ्यां नमः ह्रीं तर्जनीभ्यां नमः शिरसे स्वाहा ह्रूं मध्यमाभ्यां नमः शिखायै वषट् ह्रैं अनामिकाभ्यां नमः कवचाय हुं ह्रौं कनिष्ठिकाभ्यां नमः नेत्रत्रयाय वषट् are often attached.  I am curious about their meaning and purpose and would like to get a clarification from a knowledgeable member here.  Also what is the correct wording of this incantation?

The षडङ्गन्यास (which is what you are describing) has two parts: हृदयादिन्यासः and करन्यासः. The 6 हृदयादयः are  हृदय, शिरः, शिखा, कवच, नेत्रत्रय, and अस्त्र. The 6 अङ्गुष्ठादयः are अङ्गुष्ठ, तर्जनी, मध्यमा, अनामिका, कनिष्ठिका, and करतल-करपृष्ठौ. 

The mantra for the devata prefixes each of these nyasas. This is done either by splitting the mantra into 6 parts (or sometimes 3 parts, with the sequence repeated twice), or by taking the bija for the devata and elongating it with आं, ईं, ऊं, ऐं, औं and अः. 

Then come the nyasa statements themselves, which are composed of two parts: (a)  the part of the body nyasa is performed in, and (b) the mantra-pallava, i.e. words like नमः, स्वाहा etc.

All of these have individual meanings and purposes that are combined together in the षडङ्गन्यास. 

I haven't seen the meaning behind the करन्यास clearly explained anywhere, though various tantra texts map the five पृथिव्यादयः mahabhutas to the five fingers. 

The meaning for the mantra pallavas is called out in some prayoga works as well as the प्रपञ्चसारसारसङ्ग्रह. The meaning behind the limbs in the षडङ्गन्यास, and it's link to the pallavas is explained in the प्रपञ्चसारतन्त्र. 

I'll provide more detail later. The meaning behind the हृदयायिन्यास in particular is nice, though I don't know of any practitioners who actually employ it.

The former is used for शिखा, and the later for नेत्रत्रय. 

Here is a karika for the mantra pallavas, taken from the book "mantra sangraham" available from agamaacademy.org (in grantha script).

वषड्वश्या-फडुच्छाटे, हुं द्वेषे मारणेऽपि च । 
स्तम्भे च, वौषडाकर्षे, नमः संपत्करे तथा । 
स्वाहा शक्तिः, स्वधा पुष्टिरित्येते मन्त्रपल्लवाः ॥ 

And here is an explanation for the anga-nyasa, as found in the prapancha sara sara sangraha. A slightly different version appears in the prapancha sara tantra, but the content is the same.

हृदयं बुद्धिगम्यत्वात् प्रणामः स्यान्नमःपदम् । 
क्रियते हृदयेनातः बुद्धिगम्या नमस्कृतिः ॥ 

तुङ्गार्थः शिरसे चेति विषयाहरणे द्विठः । 
शिरो मन्त्रेण चेत्तुङ्गविषयाहृतिलक्षणा ॥ 

शिखा तेजः समुद्दिष्टा वषडित्यङ्गमुच्यते । 
तत्तेजोऽस्य तनुः प्रोक्ता शिखामन्त्रेण मन्त्रिभिः ॥ 

कव गृह्णन् इत्यस्माद्धातोः कवचसंभवः । 
हुं तेजस्तेजसा देहो गृह्यते कवचं ततः ॥ 

असुत्रासादिकौ धातू संक्षेपचलनार्थकौ । 
तेनानिष्टं समाक्षिप्य चालयेत् फट्पदाग्निना ॥ 

नेत्रं दृष्टिः समुद्दिष्टा वौषट् दर्शनमुच्यते । 
दर्शनं दृग्विषयेण स्यात् तत्तेजो नेत्रवाचनम् ॥
