Is it not panch means 5 and aayat means coming together?

In practice, 5 elders or leaders of a village coming together to resolve conflicts.

Do you mean पञ्चायतन?  पञ्चायत is not a Sanskrit word.  This vernacular word is a corrupted form of पञ्चायतन.

According to different sources, पञ्चायतन means a collective group of five venerables, such as 1) shiva, 2) Hari 3) Ganesha 4) Amba 5) Bhaskara or 1) Mata 2) Pita 3) guru 4) Atithi 5) Parameshvara.

आयतन means an abode, a temple etc.
