बहुजनहिताय बहुजनसुखाय.

Dear Group,

I have been searching for the origin of the Sanskrit phrase बहुजनहिताय बहुजनसुखाय.in Classical Sanskrit literature but have not met with any success.  After some efforts, I could locate it in a Pali text at the website of Tripitaka.  I do not understand Pali but the text at this website reads:

एवम्पि खो आयस्मा आनन्दो भगवता ओळारिके निमित्ते कयिरमाने, ओळारिके ओभासे कयिरमाने, नासक्खि पटिविज्झितुं; न भगवन्तं याचि – ‘‘तिट्ठतु, भन्ते, भगवा कप्पं; तिट्ठतु सुगतो कप्पं बहुजनहिताय बहुजनसुखाय लोकानुकम्पाय अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय देवमनुस्सान’’न्ति, यथा तं मारेन परियुट्ठितचित्तो ।

 would be glad if someone can provide me with a translation of the above passage and also point me towards a Sanskrit text in which this phrase occurs.

५४. ‘‘द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, पुग्गला लोके उप्पज्‍जमाना उप्पज्‍जन्ति अच्छरियमनुस्सा। कतमे द्वे? तथागतो च अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो, राजा च चक्‍कवत्ती। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे पुग्गला लोके उप्पज्‍जमाना उप्पज्‍जन्ति अच्छरियमनुस्सा’’ति।

५५. ‘‘द्विन्‍नं, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलानं कालकिरिया बहुनो जनस्स अनुतप्पा होति। कतमेसं द्विन्‍नं? तथागतस्स च अरहतो सम्मासम्बुद्धस्स, रञ्‍ञो च चक्‍कवत्तिस्स। इमेसं खो, भिक्खवे, द्विन्‍नं पुग्गलानं कालकिरिया बहुनो जनस्स अनुतप्पा होती’’ति।

५६. ‘‘द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, थूपारहा। कतमे द्वे? तथागतो च अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो, राजा च चक्‍कवत्ती। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे थूपारहा’’ति।

५७. ‘‘द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, बुद्धा। कतमे द्वे? तथागतो च अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो, पच्‍चेकबुद्धो च। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे बुद्धा’’ति।

५८. ‘‘द्वेमे , भिक्खवे, असनिया फलन्तिया न सन्तसन्ति। कतमे द्वे? भिक्खु च खीणासवो, हत्थाजानीयो च। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे असनिया फलन्तिया न सन्तसन्ती’’ति।

५९. ‘‘द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, असनिया फलन्तिया न सन्तसन्ति। कतमे द्वे? भिक्खु च खीणासवो, अस्साजानीयो च। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे असनिया फलन्तिया न सन्तसन्ती’’ति।

६०. ‘‘द्वेमे , भिक्खवे, असनिया फलन्तिया न सन्तसन्ति। कतमे द्वे? भिक्खु च खीणासवो, सीहो च मिगराजा। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे असनिया फलन्तिया न सन्तसन्ती’’ति।

६१. ‘‘द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, अत्थवसे सम्पस्समाना किंपुरिसा मानुसिं वाचं न भासन्ति। कतमे द्वे? मा च मुसा भणिम्हा, मा च परं अभूतेन अब्भाचिक्खिम्हाति। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे अत्थवसे सम्पस्समाना किंपुरिसा मानुसिं वाचं न भासन्ती’’ति।

६२. ‘‘द्विन्‍नं धम्मानं, भिक्खवे, अतित्तो अप्पटिवानो मातुगामो कालं करोति। कतमेसं द्विन्‍नं? मेथुनसमापत्तिया च विजायनस्स च। इमेसं खो, भिक्खवे, द्विन्‍नं धम्मानं अतित्तो अप्पटिवानो मातुगामो कालं करोती’’ति।

६३. ‘‘असन्तसन्‍निवासञ्‍च वो, भिक्खवे, देसेस्सामि सन्तसन्‍निवासञ्‍च। तं सुणाथ, साधुकं मनसि करोथ; भासिस्सामी’’ति। ‘‘एवं, भन्ते’’ति खो ते भिक्खू भगवतो पच्‍चस्सोसुं। भगवा एतदवोच –

६४. ‘‘यस्मिं, भिक्खवे, अधिकरणे उभतो वचीसंसारो दिट्ठिपळासो चेतसो आघातो अप्पच्‍चयो अनभिरद्धि अज्झत्तं अवूपसन्तं होति, तस्मेतं, भिक्खवे, अधिकरणे पाटिकङ्खं – ‘दीघत्ताय खरत्ताय वाळत्ताय संवत्तिस्सति, भिक्खू च न फासुं [फासु (क॰)] विहरिस्सन्ति’। यस्मिञ्‍च खो, भिक्खवे, अधिकरणे उभतो वचीसंसारो दिट्ठिपळासो चेतसो आघातो अप्पच्‍चयो अनभिरद्धि अज्झत्तं सुवूपसन्तं होति, तस्मेतं, भिक्खवे, अधिकरणे पाटिकङ्खं – ‘न दीघत्ताय खरत्ताय वाळत्ताय संवत्तिस्सति, भिक्खू च फासुं विहरिस्सन्ती’’’ति।

Swami Vivekananda used to quote often 'आत्मनो मोक्षार्थं जगद्धिताय च'. The source of this quote is unknown. Dr Karan Singh in his book on Hinduism attributes it to Rig Veda, but exact reference is not provided.

At this stage, Buddha summoned his 60 disciples and exhorted them to spread the dhamma as they are all freed of human or divine shackles: 

“Caratha bhikkhave carikam bahujanahitaya bahujanasukhaya lokanukampaya atthaya hitaya sukhaya devamanussanam. Ma ekena dve agamittha. Desetha bhikkhave dhammam adikalyanam majjhekalyanam pariyosanakalyanam sattham savyanjanam kevalaparipunnam parisuddham brahmacariyam pakasetha.”

 

It is the portion "Caratha bhikkhave carikam bahujanahitaya bahujanasukhaya " that is quoted usually everywhere.

lokasa~Ngraha was a common concept related to this phrase (Gita 3:20 and 25). It appears in Chanakya and Kamandaka Niti texts. Narada Parivrajaka Upanishad specifically forbids sannyasins to perform such actions! Prakrit paraphrase does not appear in scriptures.
