Sir,

One way of articulating the issue is if we have a common enemy , we all become one family and fight the common danger together or face the challenge together. There will be a time, when the national boundaries and maritime boundary line would become blurred, because mankind will encounter a common challenge at the rate we are digressing. Rational developmental economists would say, we are progressing. But  beg to differ.

To your question, the following quote in my considered view holds substance.

Ayam Bandhuh Ayam nethi gananam laghu chetasam
udhara charitanaam to vasudhaiva kutumbakam...

for the mean minded and those who think small, the differentiation happens between he or she is my family or that person is not my family... for the broad minded the whole world is one big family.

As families we encounter a problem with steadfast mind. Is nt it ?

regards
Kuppuswamy

Namaste,

I have heard the following verse conveying a similar idea. It is said to be from Mahabharata. But, I could not locate it in the Mahabharata text.

परस्परविवादे तु वयं पञ्च शतं च ते।
अन्यैः सह विवादे तु वयं पञ्चोत्तरं शतम्॥
"When there is dispute between us (Kauravas & Pandavas), we are five and they are hundred. But, when there is a dispute or fight with others, we are hundred and five."

Said by Yudhishthira to his brothers during their exile, when Duryodhana who visited Dvaita forest to humiliate the Pandavas was attacked by Gandharvas and was saved by Bheema and Arjuna.
Story in detail can be read at the following webpage.

The Sanskrit version of Yudhishthira's speech to Bhima and Arjuna is so sublime that it is hard to resist quoting it in full:

Here is the exact citation from the Vikisource Mahabharata:

Here is the exact citation from the Vikisource Mahabharata:

  1. `परैः परिभवे प्राप्ते वयं पञ्चोत्तरं शतम्। परस्परविरोधे तु वयं पञ्चैव ते शतम् ।।' 3-244-11a 3-244-11b.

The version quoted by Shankar was included in one the lessons in one of the Sanskrit Readers for UP classes (long ago 1975-80) in Kerala exactly . I did not search for the source for the quotation as I take it may be taken from any editions familiar to the compilers of the text books. It may be found in the vaRiant versions in the Critical Edition.

Bhat Sir,

Thanks for additional information. You are right about this story being included in Sanskrit text in Kerala high schools in 70s. I checked the critical edition of MB. It does not contain the verse in it main body, but it is there in foot notes with slight changes and a mention about variants. Attaching its image.
