Hello everyone,

I got a little topic for discussion and I need your feedback/opinions:

We try to keep the rug-b mailing list ad-free/job free. So you can all
read what you are interested in e.g. news about topics, topic
suggestions, discussions about topics and vouchers for conferences etc. :-)

However, we often receive emails about job offers/people looking for
freelancers or the other way around (people looking for jobs/freelance
projects).

How would you feel about a separate mailing list where people can send
job offers/project offers or people could send emails if they are
looking for a job? :-)

Please let me hear your opinions!

Instead I suggest, that job offers/inquiries should be prefixed with
[Job] (or whatever else seems fit) in the subject, everybody will be
able to junk them quickly using a mail filter, if desired. This policy
could be advertised on the website if desired.

On the other hand: the effect of introducing a separate list will
probably be the same as discouraging job offers/ads in general. The
number of people subscribed to the job list will be rather small and
therefore sending mails through that list will be uninteresting.

Cheers

Yes please. I would think the amount of job offers / request is
still moderate to low, but having a seperate list for that is even
better.

I don't care either way, but I do want to know if a separate jobs mailing list is set up.

So could you please announce the creation of any eventual new mailing list in a separate thread so that I can mute this thread?

Thanks!

The creation of a new list or prefix will be announced in a separate
thread, on twitter and on the meetup.

Prefixes work fine for people that get annoyed by job offers. But then
they have to take an extra step to do so. For joining you have to take
an extra step to get the job emails. It's an extra step in each
direction - would have to decide which step is better. I see the
concerns about fewer people, though.

As for the amount of job offers on this ML - we rejected a lot so far :-)

Using the [Jobs] prefix works well on LRUG. Anyone who is bothered by Jobs email just adds it onto their email filter.

Best, Louis.

+1 for the prefix. I follow this list and would not want to miss job searches or offerings. An extra list complicates things. Also I don’t think it will help. People might not know about the extra list, and offers may still be posted in the main list.

If having a [JOBS] prefix would increase the amount of mails related to job offers,
then I'd opt for a separate list.

There's people that are just not interested in switching jobs.
The only thing that adding a prefix would do is telling people (that are not interested in job offers): Hey, watch out, we just sent you this e-mail but you don't really care about it, so you might as well delete it right away.

Promoting the separate list next to the official list should be a must, so people that are interested in such offers know that the list exists.

If you currently have a permanent position, would you sign up for a mailing list which is meant to switch your job?

Having a prefix lets you decide on your own if you want to read it without stating you’re interested by signing up.

Nobody would subscribe to the jobs mailing list. That's just hiding them somewhere.

I agree.

We can further discuss if we want to discourage those postings in
general. Another list is basically a very strict discouragement.

Putting a prefix in front would show us who honors the rules enough and
who doesn't. That alone disqualifies some job-postings and tells a
little about the person posting.

In summary, I am for a prefix.

Cheers,
Matthias

[VOTE] +1 for the prefix, it's a sensible compromise, giving a way for people who definitely don't want to see them to filter them out, without removing them de facto (which would be IMHO the result of a separate list). In addition to who cited the London example, this also works well in the Madrid list.

Sorry for the long delay, I will write an email announcing the [JOB] tag
any minute now :-)

Thank you everyone for your input, we will see how it goes!
