Hey all,

Just in the middle of planning the June meetup. As I try to figure out
all the permutations for Ireland to get to the to the final in the
European Championships, I figured it would be a good time to put a
shout out to ye all to see if anyone wants to join in with the running
and organising of RubyIreland this year.

Despite my best efforts, the frequency of meetups has slowed to
becoming a bi-monthly thing for most of the last year. It would be
pretty cool if we could bump that up and improve how RubyIreland
works. Here's what we need

1) A pipeline of speakers (more organisers would make this easier and
more varied)
2) Write-ups before and after events
3) Organising the venue for meetups
4) Getting sponsors for food
5) Help managing the RubyIreland twitter account
6) In the long run organising bigger events, confs, etc

So please reply to this or email me directly if you want to help make
RubyIreland more awesome and take a part in it! I hate the word
committee - we can figure out titles later!

And thanks to everyone who has helped over the last year, especially
José who's put in a lot of hard work and Eamon who's been great on the
venue front with EngineYard!

I still think we should do more stuff together; there's tons of stuff
that both Ruby and JS communities would be interested in (and probably
python, alt.net, and others too) and in the end, you tend to see more
or less the same people in all meetups.
Hacking days and code retreats turned out great last year, and so did
the shared meetup we had last november(?).

Time to give http://ossdev.org/ another go?

I won't be around much during the summer but still happy to help out
with write ups and twitter.

Ok, I have a talk planned for our meetup, but I can rustle up some more speakers, or even lightning talks at my end.

Sure! we are going ahead with our dublinjs meetup on the 5th (which
will be a coding session) but what about organising something around
open source with all communities involved?

How about short talks about an open source project you've been working
on for a bit, do a bit of promotion, try to gather some help from the
community... we could get 5 or 6 speakers (15 minutes each)?

We could also go for some kind of Open Space... they do have a couple
of meeting rooms, right? we could organise short-ish workshops in the
meeting rooms (say, a vim, or a testing, or a mongo intro workshop)
and lightning talks in the main area?

Since I started my new job, I don't as much time either, but I will help out where I could, but not as much as before.

Main things I need to know:

When?
What is on?

And if this is ticketed, I think we should go the Eventbrite route, even if it's a free event to see how many people will turn up.

Hello,

The team at Homestays will be glad to get involved, the company has just been set-up and we have just moved to Dublin from London.

I'm back to programming in Ruby/Rails after spending the last couple of years working in Erlang, if enough people are interested I could prepare a talk about Erlang, it used to be a hot-topic in the Ruby community a couple of years ago, although maybe not so much these days.

What do guys you think?

are we focusing on Open Source projects or any talk will do?

Victor, would a 15 minute slot be enough or would it be better to
leave that talk for a Ruby Ireland meetup? is your proposed talk
related to an Open source project or would it be a general Erlang
talk?

I did a similar talk once for a spanish Ruby user group and it was around 45 minutes, so my idea would be to do something similar and maybe talk about the current state of concurrency in Ruby VMs: JRuby, Rubinius, MRI… So probably 45 minutes to 1 hour would be best.

It would be general though, not specific to any project.

Hey Victor,

Just been to JRubyConf (I’m still enjoying the thunderstorms in
Minneapolis, actually), and I might be able to give you a hand with the
JRuby bit, as there’s been several talks addressing concurrency. In
particular Tony Arcieri gave a talk on celluloid which was quite good.

That would be great I was planning to do a bit of research on http://celluloid.io/ Cellulloid, DCell, etc.. so if you want to take over that part that would be great, we could meet up beforehand to prepare it.

@José I'm thinking maybe most of the content fits best into the
'general' bucket rather than specific OSS projects - though everything
mentioned thus far is Open Source.

So far we have

BrianQ: talk/workshop
Victor: Erlang/Gen Ruby
Sébastien: JRuby/Celluoid

I'll add myself in for a talk sometime on a gem I released a while
back certmaker (https://github.com/theirishpenguin/certmaker) to
simplify creating add deploying SSL certs.

I was talking to Eamon and he asked whether this would be a evening or
weekend day event. I originally had planned an evening but maybe it's
a little big for that?

Heya,

yes, the thing is that if we are going for longer talks then we'd need
a weekend day more like it. Shall we go for an Unconference format on
a Saturday, with just one track of talks and one simultaneous workshop
track?

Could be something like:

workshops: 11am, 1.30pm, 3.30pm
Talks: 12am, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm

If more than one person prefers to go for a lightning talk we can
squeeze two or three in one slot.

Do we need to worry about sponsors for food? I'd rather not, to be honest.

This all sounds great but wouldn't it be better to schedule a series of recurring meetups over the next few months rather than try to do everything in a day?

IMHO much better to have recurring meetups - having lots of potential talks is great, and this is the pipeline that Declan mentioned. I think there's more value in spreading them out rather than splurging them all in one go.

It also leads to multiple small opportunities to capture sponsorship.

Guys, we have recurring monthly meetups for each of the groups; we are
trying to put something together for a broader audience; but I'm happy
to go down that route too. would be good to hear more opinions... one
event or multiple separate events?

I've chatted to a few people about this who agree, and I'd love to
have an "all Ireland" Ruby event.

So, maybe we can try to align a few Ruby meetups between RubyIreland
and BelfastRuby over the summer to happen at the same time. Would take
a bit of a telepresence setup but I think it could work pretty well
and I think you lot proved that with having a virtual Dr. Nic at one
of the recent ones!

Also with this kind of thing there are plenty of cross-border
initiatives that could help fund any associated costs. (Intertrade
Ireland for one)

Declan / Jose / anyone feel free to give us a shout up north here and
lets make it happen :)

It may be worthwhile to approach Intertrade with a schedule of possibilities - Tara Simpson's BASH gigs are something that could potentially be mirrored in both cities as well, and a 'full package' would be easier for them to deal with. BelfastJS/DublinJS too :)

Food (pizza + beer) would not be a problem if we can organize this meetup at AOL.

We hosted Test Automation Lightning Talks last week with food and drinks.

I can start talking to my manager about hosting the meeting. Please let me know how do you find the idea.

Personally I would be interested in talks / workshops about integration Erlang with Ruby, Python and BDD tools (eg: Cucumber, Lettuce) for Python and Ruby.

Guys, it seems that there are two possible routes here:
- A pipeline of Ruby Ireland 'after work' talks (potentially
connecting to Belfast Ruby).
- A one day unconference for all communities (Ruby, JS, and python so
far, potentially connecting to Belfast too).

Why don't we let the speakers decide? We've so far Brian, Victor,
Sébastien, and Declan... what do you guys think? Prefer and after work
meetup or a broader audience?

We can also go both ways; a hackathon or code retreat at AOL would be great too.

@jakub Thanks for the offer. We've already agreed with Engine Yard for
them to host the next Ruby Ireland meetup. We can see how plans evolve
regarding other events.

@everyone So in summary, we have to decide whether we want to go with
1) An all groups meetup on a weekend day
2) An all groups meetup on an evening day

@rubyirelanders We need to decide whether we want to have a separate
RubyIreland meetup

It's late on a Friday (and freakin sunny!) so let's pick this up on
Monday and try to come to a quick decision.

Okay. Just catching up on this thread. Here's a brain dump

* If we are going to have more than two presentations then a Saturday
or Sunday is probably better than a weeknight
* This means that if we have more than two groups (ie. more than
RubyIreland and 1 other group) then we'll surely have more than two
presentations
* There's interest from the Ruby, JS, PHP, Python communities already
in this event. Possibly some MongoDB and Erlang thrown in there as
well
* It would be a shame to pass up the opportunity to have a good
multi-group event

Hence I propose that we have a simple unconference event on Saturday
29th of June (no footie on that day!).

We already have (depending on the availability of presenters on that date)...

BrianQ talk/workshop on Spree/E-Commerce
Victor on Erlang
Sébastien on JRuby/Celluoid
Declan on simply SSL cloud deployment

What do ye think? I still have to check with Eamon at EY about that date.
