Let's start later at 2:30pm to let the field dry, as it is still supposed to rain a bit more tonight and tomorrow morning.

Game ON - June 12 2:30pm Welsh park. Watch this thread in case the field is taken. Check below the parking lot at Welsh park then Rock Terrace elementary if you can't find us.

Weather: high 70s. Remember to bring white shirt, dark shirt, WATER, cleats, disc, cones if you have them. No grey or light colors please.

The correct phone number for Welsh park is ‪the city of Rockville rainout line: (240) 314-5055

If this doesn't fit in your schedule, you might want to try the blueberry hill park group: https://groups.google.com/g/blueberryhillultimatefrisbee

Let's not throw the group into chaos by calling a wacky-timed game because maybe it'll rain a bit tonight.  The field will have 16 hours between now and 10am to dry. That field dries very quickly.  So it'll be perfect.  Checking the rain line in the future isn't a bad idea though.

Well if you think the field dries when the sun is down and humidity is above 90%, go right ahead.

With no more rain in the forecast, let's just meet at the regular time, 10:30.  To be safe, if someone wants to check the rain line Chuck mentioned that would be great.

Rock Terrace is officially closed.

ROCK TERRACE SPECIAL SCHOOL FIELD (EXT: 254)Due to wet conditions, fields are unsafe to play. Thank you.

7 minutes ago

Highly likely Welsh will be closed too. It is better not to play today.

Hi Joe et all. As far as I know that message for rock terrace is from 2 weeks ago. There is a large poster on the field which has been there for a while.

If they have not officially closed other fields I think we should play. I live in Rockville and my soil is claylike. It needs a couple of days of rain to become moist. In the past days, despite the forecasts, some areas received very little actual rain. Frost MS is down the street...we used to play there in the past. The field is up high thus drains well. but I think we need a permit that someone (Larry/ Gary?) organized in the past.

I know Joe doesn't want to get his feet wet but after not playing for one year, daddy needs his disc!

I know it is very hard for some people to read, but 7 minutes ago does not mean 2 weeks ago.

As you can see here: https://rainoutline.com/search/dnis/3015795610

Every single grass field in the area is closed as of this morning (not two weeks ago). A couple synthetic fields or fields in germantown are open.

Just about everything not synthetic turf is closed as of 7am. If things change, maybe reconsider, but let’s have some respect for the fields otherwise. Daddy can go do other things.

This will follow up on this thread's discussion of rain and fields, with the hope of solidifying a consensus guideline for the next times the weather raises this issue.  Its main points (though not its specfic wording and sub-points) were agreed on by a bunch of us a few hours ago.

First, thanks to Charles Yu, Joseph Huang, and everyone else who raised concerns about damaging fields by playing at the wrong time and place. I think we all agree that we have a responsibility to treat with respect the fields we use, and we appreciate their involvement and the spirit of conservation from which they wrote.

Second, field conditions at Upper Welsh turned out to be just fine today.  We had good pickup games (6 on 6 with a few subs, at peak). We did not damage the turf: I don't think anyone who walked by now would be able to tell we played.  As both background and evidence, post-game photos are attached (including one of the adjacent infield as the best way to see the dryness leve)l.

Third, there are frequent players who live near Welsh and are often able to provide real-time, on-site reports of field conditions and occupancy as game time approaches.

Fourth, Rain Out Line is oriented towards organized sports leagues, and when it says a field is "closed," that means the organized sports leagues with permit rights can't use that field.  But so it doesn't seem to make fine distinctions based on each field's drainage etc., or to reflect actual inspections of each field's conditions. Experience (as with Upper Welsh today) shows that it often posts "closed" for fields/times that could support fully turf-conscious play. So far as we can tell, a field being "closed" on Rain Out Line doesn't mean that it's formally closed to activities other than use by permitted sports leagues -- that, e.g., a parent would be doing anything unauthorized by letting their kids run around on it.  There are some other fields that have posted rules about when they're available for use; Welsh doesn't, which seems meaningful. (If anyone reading this has contrary information, please let us know.)  For the time being this Rockville Ultimate group is operating informally, not under a County permit.  That means we have the downside of having to take what's available, but the upside of not being obligated to go by Rain Out Line.

Fifth, the turf on all our usual fields is now in excellent, resilient shape, after the past year's pandemic fallow. Playing on it now is less likely to cause damage than might be the case at other times.

Sixth,  there are options between cancellation and playing as usual.  For example, to disperse wear, fields can be set up in less-used parts of our usual parks.  On a warm day, we could forego cleats and play in sneakers or barefoot.

Seventh on the line: The consensus (among today's players) is that whether, where, and how to play in light of weather conditions should reflect our own, turf-conservative, best judgment, and not dictated by Rain Out Line. When it's a close call, we should make game-time decisions, hopefully informed by advance scouting from players who live nearby.

Ok?

It is my view, FWIW, that perception is important and we want to be perceived as good citizens.  Playing on a closed field, IMHO, does not accomplish that.  I mean seriously, this happens a few times per year and in my view, it is better to miss a few days of ultimate than be viewed as bad citizens.  Spirit of the game and all.  For better or for worse, all of us are impacted by the actions of a few of us.  I would hate to be denied a field reservation by MoCo due to going against MoCo rules.  Will that happen?  I don’t know.  But I like to err on the side of the positive citizen.

If people play, they play.  But IMHO it is worth missing a couple games per year to be viewed positively.  I love playing ultimate but there are games almost every day so missing one day is recoverable.  To me it’s not about what we can do, but what we should do.

Cheers,

JV

Full quote below  Those are useful criteria; thanks for them.  They don’t say “go by Rain Out Lone,” which is a private app and not “MOPS, CUPF, Park staff, or Park Police,” and would render the physical criteria superfluous   Upper Welsh yesterday was fine by all of the quoted physical criteria.

Natural Grass Fields

All play on any park or school natural grass athletic field is prohibited whenever:

  • The field is closed for renovation or repair;
  • Water is standing on the field;
  • One half inch of rain or more has fallen within the previous 24 hours;
  • Soil is frozen;
  • Soil is wet and "spongy";
  • The ground is muddy and soil clumps or clings to shoes;
  • Steady rain is falling;
  • A lightning/electrical storm is occurring;
  • The field is deemed unplayable by MOPS, CUPF, Park staff or Park Police; or
  • The field is closed for seasonal rest or preparation (all Local Park athletic fields are closed for play from December 1 - March 14, Recreational / Regional Park athletic fields are closed for play from December 1 - March 31 and August 1 - August 15).

Rainout line is a private app...which MoCo pays to use.

Also, we were pretty damn close, if not over the 0.5 inches of rain standard.
