One
small step for
IPC,
one giant leap
for the permie
community!
|
|
Dear
fellow permies
around the world
Welcome to IPC Mag for
this second edition!
We're delighted to
come back this month
with plenty of news
and updates about the
coming 13th
Convergence, still
living under the
excitement of
celebrating of the International
Permaculture Day
here in Hyderabad. We
really enjoyed it and
took it as a little
glimpse of what awaits
us during our next
celebration with the
worldwide permaculture
community!
It has always been at
the heart of the
International
Permaculture
Convergence to ensure
that our event is truly
representative of
the permaculture
movement
and projects from all
across the globe. As
for India, our deeper
wish is to make it
possible for anyone to
join us in November,
including local
farmers, not
just from Telangana
& Andhra Pradesh
where we've been
working for many
years, but from all
over the country. Does
that sound like
a waking dream? Not
for long if everyone
connects, and
participates in our crowdfunding
campaign
that we've just
launched. Every
pledge counts, every
contribution is a
small step for IPC,
but a giant leap for
the permie community
and its diversity: May
the "Fair share" be
with us!
Speaking about this
great diversity
of people involved in
permaculture, it
appears to be the
perfect month for
us to introduce to you
the IPC subtheme “Grassroots
permaculture in
action”.
Hope you will enjoy
the reading as much as
the coming month.
Until next time...
Mulch, mulch, mulch!!!

May
and June mark a new
challenge for IPC
India 2017!
In a world
where inequalities
prevent some of us to
book a flight or pay
the registration for
the event, we had to
find a way to make a
difference. To these
inequalities, we
respond with
two ambitious crowdfunding
campaigns for
less privileged
permies and local
farmers to join us in
November.
We have two
months to
raise $50,000 to
welcome as many
scholarship applicants
from developing
countries (to be
launched very soon,
stay tuned!), and
₹10,00,000 to gather
at least 40 farmers
from all over India.
Will
you take up this
challenge with us?

Permaculture
is all about people
getting together to
bring ecological
balance and social
justice, and building
more resilient and
inclusive
communities.
Over the years, our
growing movement has
drawn its strength and
spread its seeds
through thousands of initiatives
bringing hope and
change across the
world,
while embracing
permies from all ages
and backgrounds.
Be at the local,
national or
international level,
Permaculture
grassroots networks
have multiplied to
connect great
diversity of people,
whether they are US
school kids,
illiterate villagers
in Vietnam, or council
estate residents in
Liverpool. Grassroots
permaculture is
everywhere,
well and truly in
action towards
self-sufficient and
sustainable
livelihoods. Be there
in November to
discover it with your
own eyes, and ears!
Who
is
participating
in
permaculture?
Interesting question
when it comes to talk
about grassroots
permaculture. Well, we
hope IPC India 2017
will be able to
provide better results
than the 2015 research
led by Rafter Sass
Ferguson (who will be
speaking at the event)
and Sarah T. Lovell on
the topic. Their survey involved 731 permies from
45 countries. While
participation of women
turned out to be at or
above parity with 53%,
participation by race
showed a 96% white
supermajority.
True, this survey was
conducted only through
English. But we still
take it as a good
reason to show
the real diversity
of people
who are part of the
permaculture movement
worldwide.
Aranya
Agricultural
Alternatives
has always seen
permaculture as a tool
for empowerment and
worked at a grassroots
level with local
farmers (especially
women) and tribal
communities. We have
have an approach of
identifying solutions
that address both
social and
environmental concerns
through a healthy
synergy between the
two and we're looking
forward to all the
lively discussions
that will be happening
around this topic.

After
gathering so
many abstracts
from across
the world,
we’re now
fully immersed
in the review
of an
incredible
variety of
initiatives,
each more
surprising,
creative, and
inspiring than
the others.
Besides,
everyone seems
to find a
subtheme that
fits like a
glove to their
work, and we
have now 39
officially
registered
speakers!
To honour our
May subtheme,
let us
introduce you
to Ghassan Al
Salman and
Karen de Vries
who will
address "Grassroots
Permaculture
in Action". Ghassan's
running
projects with
young Syrian
refugees in
Lebanon and
will do a
presentation
on "Micro
gardening
workshops in
Syrian refugee
camps in
Lebanon".
Karen is the
co-founder of
the Eden
garden and
center La Loma
Viva in Spain
and will share
about
"Emerging
Resilient
Cultures -
Voices from
the Edge". We
bet their
speaking
will be
very captivating!

Summer heat in South India never comes without troubles.
While some
part of India
is facing
severe
drought,
our Convergence
farm's team
has lately
faced
flames spreading
from
neighboring
areas. Fires
were
extinguished,
damages controlled, and Polam has not stopped flourishing.
Happily, November is a much cooler month, and definitely the best period
for you to
visit us!

Waiting
for June
and its rainy
season
to bring some
humid and
fresh air
around the
venue, local
workers and
volunteers are
getting prepared for water harvesting work and tree plantation. Chickens
were not
forgotten,
and will
be well
protected from
now in a new
beautiful and
comfortable bamboo
henhouse while
we keep our
mulch safe
from their
appetite and
claws during a
time in which
every drop of
water counts.

|
A huge work
has happened
also in the seed-saving
room getting
full of our
precious local
seeds
now conscientiously
identified,
listed and
kept in tens
of recycled
pots. A big
step is lying
ahead for the
next months in
Polam : the
setting up of
IPC-village
is about to
start!

For a children-friendly IPC!
|
|
|
Everyone can get into Permaculture, can't they? With a children's
programme
this year, we
will make sure
that future
budding
permies enjoy
both the
Conference and
Convergence as
much as their
parents! While
the little
ones and their
families from
across the
globe will
gather at the
"Seed Space",
a
joyful team of
permaculture
educators and
facilitators
is getting
ready to guide
the "Earth
Bugs" (4 to
12) and the
"Wild
Warriors" (13+)
in close to
nature
adventures.
Active
bodies,
cooking,
recycled art
and many other
oudoor
activities will
be organised,
together with
mini design
and practical
earth and
animal
projects, and
even a Perma
think-tank is
waiting for
the kids.
Grown-ups will
get terribly
jealous !

Since IPC is a self-funded event, sponsors are
an invaluable
support to
make this
event a
success. We’re
very happy and
thankful to
add
Permaculture
Design
Magazine to
our list
of sponsors!

Permaculture Design
has served the North
American permaculture
community and readers
around the world for
over 30 years,
originally known as
the Permaculture
Activist. The magazine
receives no public
funding and has
consistently garnered
high regard for
dedication to
grassroots learning
and design
intelligence. We
report stories from
readers, activists,
designers, teachers,
and community
organizers across the
continent and around
the world to reveal
the newest discoveries
in ecological systems.
We attempt to work at
the permaculture edge
and to provide
information useful to
people working on the
ground.

Get
involved as a
volunteer !
With the
setting up of
IPC village
beginning
soon,
activities
will multiply
at the
Convergence
farm. And so
will
volunteering
opportunities!
Earthworks
and planting,
natural
building,
carpentry,
waste
management,
renewable
energies
installation,
documentation
of planting
zones...
You wouldn't
suspect in how
many
areas your
skills and
contribution
could be
of great help
at Polam. Back
in town, the
small office
team in
Hyderabad is
also all ready
to welcome new
colleagues for
the huge but
exciting communication
and marketing
work around
the event!

Last month was dedicated to "Women as Agents of
Change", and you got
to know two of
our female
volunteers. Let's
restore balance by
presenting two of
our international
male volunteers this
time! Claude
(Quebec)
left the Canadian
winter in March to
reach summer in
South India for 3
months. Four months
before him, Dorian
(France) arrived
in Hyderabad to join
the IPC team at
Aranya's office for
the huge
organisation work
that such an event
requires. They both
are excellent
keepers of a good
team spirit!
|
|
Be
a sponsor!
As an
individual, an
association or
a company,
you have the
possibility to
increase the
access to IPC
for people who
can’t afford
it. You can
support the participation
of
permaculturists
or farmers
from all over
the world who
can’t pay for
a full price
ticket or
their travel
to India. Make
it happen,
sponsor them!
|
|
|
Our
crowdfunding
campaign will
run until mid-June,
so don't
hesitate to
spread the
word around
you, among
your friends
and on
Facebook! And
be prepared
for the second
campaign which
will soon
be launched by
our dear
friends and
huge
supporters of
IPCC
(International
Permaculture
Convergence
Council) and
FIPC (Friends
of IPC) for
the International
scholarship
funds.
Stay tuned!
