If I pre-assign a target container to a list in a content class, will
existing instances of that class pick up that setting or only new
instances created from that point forward?

Pre-assignment is not a retroactive setting.

OK, so next question is how do you change the target container setting
on a list for all instances of a content class? Please dont tell me
one at a time ;)

There is a plugin to do this available form the RedDot Community
website: Assign Target Container for All Content Class Instances. It
works like the action "Assign Target Container in Clipboard", but the
TC assignment is applied for All Pages based on the same template.

THere is another way to do it...

Duplicate the content class that you are currently using and set the
preassignment in the copy then replace the existing content class with
the modified duplicate. This should do the trick for you.

As jgramp said there is a plugin for this - It works well, used it a
fair bit without a problem. Also works on list as well as cnt. Not
sure where we got it from though.

Hi,

I am trying to locate the plugin to change my target container assignments.
For the moment I not able to find it in the internet jungle.
So if anybody has precise directions, they are more than welcome.

Regards,
Bart

Assign Target Container for All Content Class Instances (CMS 7.x)
This plugin works like the action "Assign Target Container in Clipboard", but also gives you the ability to apply the target container assignment to all existing pages based on the same content class. You have the option to select which pages the assignment be applied to.

Notes: Will not work when a container is selected (containers cannot have TC assignment).  Selected Clipboard item must be defined as a target container.  Affects existing pages only -- if you want all future pages to adopt the same target container assignment, you must also pre assign the target container to the template element, separately from this plugin.

Warning: Will replace all pre-existing target container assignments for the selected link element, for ALL pages based on the template. If the selected link element is a dynamic link, the TC will be assigned to ALL iterations of the link element.
