For group passage, YES votes must be at least 2/3 of all valid (YES
and NO) votes. There also must be at least 100 more YES votes than NO
votes.
After these results are posted, there will be a five day discussion
period in news.groups. Objections or inaccuracies that could change
the outcome should be posted and mailed to the news.announce.newgroups
moderator at <newgroup...@isc.org>. If no serious allegations
of voting irregularities are raised, the n.a.n moderator will create
the groups shortly.
Newsgroups lines:
rec.toys.action-figures.discuss Discussion of action figure toys.
rec.toys.action-figures.marketplace Buying, selling, trading and auctions.
A neutral, third-party volunteer is conducted this vote. Direct
questions about the groups to the proponent.
Proponent: Eric G. Myers <e...@toymania.com>
Votetaker: Rebecca McQuitty <m...@best.com>
RATIONALE: all groups
The rec.toys.* hierarchy has expanded immensely over the past two
years. In that time, the hierarchy has grown from two core groups to
five diverse groups. Each group has developed it own culture and
norms. However, at least one of the groups is facing a serious
challenge in the preponderance of marketplace-type postings (i.e.,
posts related to buying, selling, trading or auctions).
This group, rec.toys.action-figures, is an extremely active group,
averaging well over 200 posts per day and trends indicate that this
is increasing. Of these daily posts, a significant proportion would be
appropriate for a marketplace group.
In addition to the traffic issue, much of the conflict found in this
group revolves around the presence of marketplace-type posts.
While it is possible that this type of conflict could also develop in
the proposed group, it is believed that the creation of marketplace
group will be of benefit to all parties involved by making the
newsgroups more easily navigable.
The choice to structure the proposal in its current form was not an
easy one. A simple rec.toys.marketplace group has been discussed
numerous times. However, a general marketplace group has
implications for all the rec.toys.* groups. The greatest resistance to
a group such as this isthe unwillingness of many readers to have to
search through a newsgroup containing hundreds of posts unrelated
to the items they might be seeking. As previously stated, each group
has developed its own norms and culture. Thus, several groups have
expressed an interest in keeping the marketplace-type postings within
their existing groups at this time (with an option to expand to the
marketplace format at some time in the future if it is deemed
necessary).
Therefore, we are faced with a challenge in trying to address the
concerns of the affected of the newsgroup without unnecessarily
disrupting the culture of the other newsgroups. The current proposal
favors the split of the affected newsgroup, rec.toys.action-figures
into separate marketplace and discussion subgroups.
The ".discuss" was added after a straw poll on naming choices was
conducted earlier this year. The naming is intended to make explicit
the purpose of the group. In addition, its use is an intentional
effort to keep the discussion and marketplace groups at the same
level within the hierarchy. It is believed that its use will be one
tool to help minimize inappropriate crossposting while also allowing
for future expansion within the hierarchy. Readers of the group to be
renamed have been informed that it is not required to rename the
group. However, pre-RFD discussion indicated that renaming was
desirable for the reasons stated above.
A previous version of this proposal was narrowly defeated one year
ago. Numerous readers of the current rec.toys.action-figures newsgroup
have stated that they were wholly unaware that voting had begun at
that time. This may have been a result of the heavy traffic in the
newsgroup in that many posts can get overlooked. Additionally, because
the RFD and CFV posts use an abbreviation prefix, they may resemble
"For Sale" posts and thus be overlooked by some readers.
Traffic has continued to increase and many more readers have become
interested in seeing this proposal come to fruition.
In addition, there was some controversy about the use of ".misc" in
the previous proposal. While some of the issues may still be present
in the use of ".discuss", it is believed that it is a reasonable
compromise that has been endorsed by the readership of the current
newsgroup. The implications of such a change were discussed in the
pre-RFD discussion and a strawpoll indicated that this was the name
of choice as endorsed by the current readership.

Geez, like no one would seen through that clever deception. "Winewool,"
indeed. It's 10...10 Terrys for the price of one! Which means the actual "no"
vote was around 32.

1. People who don't want to buy DO NOT have to search two groups. People
how are ONLY shopping don't have to search two groups.
2. I encourage you to visit the rec.arts.comics.* hierarchy for an example
of a newsgroup cluster that has successfully segregated commercial posts,
and created a great sense of community in the process.
Or, just sit back and watch it happen here.

Well, you may believe that is the case (i.e., that FS posts will
continue on both groups) but the majority apparently believe that we can
follow in the footsteps of hiearchies like rec.arts.comics.* to
effective divide traffic into discussion and marketplace groups. That
way, buyers and seller have a dedicated forum to ply their trade. I
would think that sellers would be happy for such a situation given the
mix of posts in the current group. And similarly, those who want to
engage in discussion don't have to wade through several hundred FS posts
every day.
I think that is reason enough to be exicted. :) Your mileage may vary.

"Collecting isn't everything; you have to PLAY with it!" - Alexi, age 8
------------------------------------
The dragon returned to the lair after many days to find the warrior deep in thought. "Why so glum?" he asked her.
Slowly, she responded, "Dragon....I've missed you so much! When you're away, the night is darker, the days are longer, the flowers aren't as bright, and the air is empty and cold. I occupy my time as best I can, doing what needs to be done, honing my skills, making myself stronger...thinking about you...and waiting... I am quite capable of taking care of myself, yet I feel lost when you're not here. I hate feeling like this!"
"What is the alternative?" asked the dragon.
"There is none," she replied and after a long pause, she added, "Why does love also cause one to feel pain, loneliness, and sadness?"
"I'm afraid I don't know," answered the dragon. He brought his great bulk down onto the ground next to her and wrapped his long tail around her still body as he tried to warm her worried heart. She remained perfectly still and did not look at him. She was afraid to. A silent tear rolled down her face and fell toward the ground. The dragon caught it in his paw where it immediately turned into a pearl. He closed his paw around it and held it tightly. He tried to think of something to say to comfort her, but all the words he thought of seemed inadequate, so he dismissed them before they could be airborne. As such, she never heard how much he loved her and didn't know.

Woohoo!
Eric, thanks again for heading this up. I'm pretty excited about it.
Look at that gigantic margin. And to think, last time it was so
close. But that's in the past. I see many happy days of toy
discussion in the future. :)

A resounding second to this. After two years of work, Eric, it pays off. ;)
Congrats buddy, and congrats to all the group who about doubled the previous turnout!

Hey, can anybody tell me if there's a list anywhere that shows who voted?
When I try to click on the "reference" number for Rebecca McQuitty's
original post in this thread, I get an error message saying "No such
article." I'd like to see who voted (and how they voted) so I know who
to pick on in the future.

It may hit your newsserver later today or tomorrow, so you could just try
again later-- or, you should be able to find it at www.dejanews.com pretty
easily (again... they might not post it until later today).
Kevin
Bryan, all kinds of smartass comments came to my mind to respond to the
level of insult you've hurled out in your post.
Instead, I took a deep breath, and all I'm gonna say is that I for one,
would find it a huge improvement if everyone in this group could take a
deep breath and realize there are human beings on the other end of every
post, not targets.
And maybe "if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at
all",
There are so few posts in here that don't slam someone somehow, even
when talking toys, that lately it's been more relaxing to read the FS,
FT, FA posts than the discussions.
Just 'cause "everyone's entitled to an opinion" and it's an open news
group, does not mean we HAVE to say everything we think, or that we have
to say it in an insulting cutting way.
Sometimes reading this group is alot like living in a dysfunctional
abusive household, where the majority of one's time is spent cringing
when you overhear how people talk to one another, and slide their sly
nasty comments in, in oneupmanship. So you hide (lurk) and try not to
get involved, or else you step in boldly and get "iced" by the rest of
the family for trying to put an end to their "fun". Or lastly, and more
dangerously, you imitate what's going on in order to be included and
liked, so you perpetuate the abuse.
I know we all play with toys folks, but that doesn't mean we can't act
like healthy mature grownups in our dealings with each other.

Well, that's understandable. You've never been the sharpest knife in the drawer.
But I'll go nice and slow.
Those who don't want to buy figures don't have to go through two groups.
Those who don't want to talk about toys don't have to go through two groups.
Those who mostly want to talk about toys, and occasionally look for specific
items for sale can read one group and do Dejanews or quick skims of the other
group.
Those who want to find good, respectable sellers to deal with can quickly
exclude any halfwit who posts off-topic For Sale posts to .discuss.
There will be FEWER FS posts in .discuss, and those posts will be clearly
off-topic, and those who post them can be morally and ethically pimp-slapped.
And, worst case scenario, someone who wants to read every post in both groups
will have to add an extra newsgroup to their subscribe list, which, as far as
I'm concerned, ain't no thang.
Get it? Got it? Good.

Well maybe some will cross-post to the disc...umm...discuss group.
But with the ill temperments that follow this group, I am sure there
will not be that many who will stand up to the wrath. I have seen many
who have fallen and yet this group continues...
I would have liked to have seen the group as one. But the majority has
spoken. So congrats are in order...
I have only one question...Who will be the 1st cross-poster to the
new groups....Any bets.

One great thing about the split, IMHO, is that scalpers can now be booted
for posting in the discussion group. Many providers take complaints about
repeated off charter postings *very* seriously, and knowing the average scalper
they won't be able to resist. Sure, we won't get them all cut off, but for
every one that we do I'll do a happy little dance.

Ronsports. He just won't be able to resist the chance to tell two groups at
once about his fabulous $28 Greedo's.
Let me add a whoohooo! I just hope I will get the newsgroup here in
Australia now :) Well all I want is the discussion one :)

ah, pipe down ya trollop!<sorry brook... really... it was just a bad joke...
HONESTLY !>
but in all seriousness.... i think the level of "wrath" and "ill temperments" aren't
really nearly as severe as many say they are. true, i may be a little thicker
skinned than some [since i don't acknowledge "wrath" until i'm actually punched in
the face]. it IS true that some naive or misinformed newbies get "jumped" and it
would be nice to see them treated with kid gloves or at least be calmly and politely
informed of their misguided desires for profit etc instead of having their teeth
kicked down their throat off the bat... BUT... on the other hand, to many people,
this is a passionate hobby, one that not only involves the spirit of other hobbies
[fun, realaxation, creativity, comaraderie etc] but also rekindles a great amount of
very personal nostalgia, recapturing memories of innocence and purity; times when
the world was simple and harmless... and one of the very last bastions that these
thoughts can still be attained in this day and age.... to see this HOBBY sullied,
infiltrated and polluted by "adult" ideals of profit, greed, dishonesty and avarice
is not only distasteful as far as being a collecter goes, it is downright invasive
and painful to those who view the hobby as more than simply amassing plastic things.
to some, it is a direct assault upon their attempts to AVOID the world of greed and
competition that surrounds them in day to day life.... for this reason, there are
few words that i find are too harsh to convey the feelings of those who wish to
discourage the profiteers, the opportunists, the vultures... be they seasoned
conmen, or naive speculators.

The rules include "one vote per person, one vote per address" and "you
may not distribute this CFV", so most creativity manages to violate them.

Actually, you're right. And I was wrong. And since it's too late to cancel,
I'd just like to publicly apologize to cstoj, and to all of ratmm, for that
post. I offer the following not as excuse, but merely as explanation.
1) Looking at what I wrote, in retrospect, it came out as about 40% harsher
than my original intent when I wrote the post.
2) Looking at Dejanews, I realize I had cstoj -completely- confused with
another poster entirely, whose history was what inspired the desire to
be harsh at all in the first place.
In other words, not only didn't I know what I was doing, I didn't word it well
either. Again, cstoj, I'm very sorry. That's twice this week on Usenet that
I've posted first and thought later, and goodness knows I should know better.

I would, but I'm afraid of what the aftereffects might be. Scalpers and
innocents alike would run screaming from thier monitors to escape the terror of
those pictures. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
