How many of you have worn blackface or impersonated, or caricature-ized, another social group?

I can remember some things I did. Pretty sure I’ve never worn blackface, especially the vaudevillian style. Also pretty sure I made fun (probably daily) of all my black friends social stereotypes, but that knife cut both ways with my friends.

This whole thing starts as a political gotcha, then spirals out of control, or in this case boomerangs back onto the left.

How would we ever have Eddie Murphy or Richard Pryor today?

Or Mel Brooks..
Richard Pryor made a living making fun of white folks and we laughed right along with him.
I can't imagine what it must be like to be immune to being called a racist but black america must be high fiving and dapping every day a the last cracker that got called a racist.

1972-73, grade school talent show. Five girls (four honkies, one hisp) put on afro wigs and what I assumed was dark Karo syrup or God knows what and lip-synched Jackson 5 songs.

Amazingly, the ACLU didn't show up, nor did the one black kid burn the school down.

No chance. I’m quite shocked it’s as common as it apparently is.

I fail to see why it would ever be thought of as funny or clever in a. costume, even in a bubble of ignorance but maybe that’s just me. Clearly it’s a big thing in Virginia.

I was an Indian in a jr high play...dressed the part including "brown face".

I swear my brother's class did a play with a blackface part (we were basically an all-white school)...maybe Tom Sawyer?

I could tell you. First of all it is a term used by people who are too
ignorant to rebut what was said.

The "Nigger Jim" character is the reason why Huckleberry Finn is banned from our public schools.

I haven't that I can remember. But I'm sure if I found myself governor of a state, I would be reminded pretty quickly if there are any cases that I forgot (for which there is photographic evidence, heh).

Agree. However, had Twain referred to him as "Negro Jim" instead, I think it still would be on HS library shelves.

Blackface sets me on edge.

The act would have been more effective with only the wigs and apparel.
Then it is homage.

Because of technical and social progress they don't need the book any
more. They have live ones.

Particularly, given Clemens's attitude toward slavery.
Still in our municipal public library.

Have you noticed that all people of color wear blackface?
