Well put it this was, my triceps are aching this morning, yet I have a
strange sense of contentment! Also, a mysterious record has appeared on

Peter, don't be such a tease! Tell us more ... How long have you been
working on 13? How clean was the flash?

and ...

Have you got it on video?

Finally, congratulations on making juggling history!

Wow! What now, you gonna try it again any time soon or have you made plans
to do something specific in your practice once you managed it.

I've been working on 13 for about a year but not intensively at all. I
normally have about 2 sessions of trying it a week and a session normally
consists of 1 or 2 tries, since each try takes so much effort. I must have
actually tried to flash 13 balls only around 100 times. The closest I'd
come before last night was only 10 catches but there were a couple of
times where I felt like I could have caught them all with a bit of luck.

When I did it last night it was very clean - I didn't have to move to
catch them. The thing is that it has to be like that for there to be any
chance of catching them. I did it on about my 5th go. Recently I've been
practicing it for more like 5 tries even though I thought there would be
no chance of doing it after the second or third go. What I was thinking
just before launching them was to start low and fast and gradually
increase the height while trying to maintain the speed throughout. This is
the best technique for 2 reasons. Firslty, you're starting low when you
have the most weight in your hands and getting higher as the weight in the
hands decreases. Secondly, by increasing the height throughout the balls
seperate out in the air so that they come down with a lower frequency,
making them easier to catch. I've thought along these lines before but
it's never really payed off that much because the faster you start the
more chance there is of the balls going in the wrong directions. It's not
easy to release all those beanbags cleanly at high speed.

Two people (Joe Hague and Jacob Chadwick) kind of saw me catch them but
they have no way of knowing that I threw them all or that it was 13 balls
- I didn't think to show them the balls in my hands after. They believe me
though. Obviously I didn't video it (I hardly ever video myself) but if I
get it to the point where I think I'll have a good chance of doing it then
I'll try to film it.

university as me - I've never seen anyone juggling that many balls (or
anything), maybe you can show us all tomorrow? :)

You've raised the bar again sir. Damn you... :D

I just can't imagine how you hold 13 beanbags and release them all
cleanly. I know there isn't much stock in flashes, but when it gets up
there, there's definitely alot to hit.

Another milestone in juggling history.

Yes I was there!.....although I did not SEE the said event -(did it really

did hear the dull thud of 13 or so tiny bags followed by a rather squeaky
yelp of joy.
Well done my boy it is a great feat.
I would just like to point out that although he has flashed 13 - I still
beat him on a seven

Spot on, Jason! :)

Just seeing how easy and graceful it looked for Peter to flash 11 balls
and manage a pirouette before the eleventh catch left me no doubt that
he'd flash 13 eventually.

It still remains truly exceptionnal, though! Congratulation Peter!

odd numbers very well. Up to 10 at the moment. Giv it about 4 years or so

I'm cuious what you felt while doing that

Well he won't have any competition from me. I can't flash even numbers
very well. I have to use asynch fountain and I think synch fountain is the
way to go with 14. I believe Sam Hartford was trying it though.
Good luck with that Seerzy, just take it slowly and do the right training

Just curious. Also, you say you started juggling 10 months ago does
that mean 10 months ago you couldn't juggle 3 balls or is that when you
started training "seriously."

That's a good point. Although I do have 7 130g bean bags and 5 oddballs,
so I could try that. Not sure how I'd go catching 3 oddballs and three
beanbags in one hand. And if I wanted to try 13, I'd have to throw in a
football, or a cigarbox... or maybe the golf ball that smashed through our
back window last week (stupid neighbours)!

I just have to say that watching you spend ages carefully arranging
six beanbags in one hand and seven in the other, then another minute
or so in deep concentration as if you're about to do something actually
quite impressive, then seeing the first throw fly away about ten feet
behind your head is absolutely bloody hilarious. A top comedy moment. :-)

> It's not
> easy to release all those beanbags cleanly at high speed.

Indeed. But never mind all this talk of clever juggling techniques, what
we all really want to know is what track you had playing on your mp3 player
at the time. Perhaps we could all listen to it whilst practising and
see if it makes a discernable difference....

Tom

p.s. Oh yeah...congratulations and all that. :-)

hehe, I'm glad you find it ammusing. I think that saying I spend a minute
in deep concentration is stretching it a bit - more like a couple of
seconds.

It's not music. It's a confidence track that I recorded. It says "you are
a good juggler, you can flash 13 balls easily, 13 balls is nothing, my
gran could flash 13 balls, ...". I also have a reverse psychology one that
I use sometimes that says "13 balls is impossible, you'll never flash 13
balls, it can't be done ...". ;-)

Hahaha... That's brilliant! I had a fun five or so minutes thinking
about all the different tracks that famous jugglers would be using.

Jason Garfield: "You are the best jugger in the world. No one is better
than you. Not even that arrogant chump ..."

Ben Beever: "678294153234759618567183942..."

Michael Karas: "Elbow, neck, back of hand, underarm, knee, forehead, ..."

Eden Zak: "Boing, boing, boing, boing, boing, ..."

Jugglingeek: "Just because you can't see the balls, doesn't mean they're
not still there."

Dave Nager: "My name is NAY-gs. NAY-gs. Dee-NAY-gs. How hard can it
be?!"

Norbi: "Rings are good. Work through the pain. Don't listen to everyone
else."

Anthony Gatto: "Bah, I thought juggling was supposed to be hard."

Thomas Dietz: "Schni-Schna-Schnappi, Schnappi, Schnappi, Schnapp!"

Cheers,
Dave

It could be rather hard to pull that feat of if you at the last second
think "Hey! What the hell am I doing? I haven't even qualified 10!".
