The reason that the Ultra has had to be pushed back is that Nintendo is
dictating the quality as well as the content of the games. If you doubt
that this happens, remember Mortal Kombat 1?? The blood was grey! They
have very strict guidelines about content, and from what I hear, they are
now kicking games back for not only content, but for graphics, and play
mechanics.

I'm not totally stupid, I understand that this will make the system
appear to be superior to the others because all the games are polished
when they come out. But as a developer, you would think that after you
payedd your $250,000, and investing a year of time, and all the cash you
have invested in your staff, that YOU would have the final say over your
title. This is not the case at the big N. They want to rule you from
beginning to end.

If the developer agrees to this, then what's your problem? SO your saying,
getting mugged is wrong. But is it wrong if you say:"hey criminals! Look
at my nice jewels! You can have 'em if you want! free of charge!!" Nope.
Perfectly okay by my country's law. AND, you've got it ALL wrong. Nintendo
is not CENSORING games. They are making sure they are of the BEST quality.
Have you ALREADY forgotten the ratings system? You FAIL to mention MK2!!
MK3!! Both have blood!
Nintendo just wants to STOP third party companies from releasing half
cooked games with cheap graphics and -NO- gameplay. SO Nintendo forces the
3rd parties to develop games to a CERTAIN DEGREE OF QUALITY,(NOT
censorship, genius) or else they cannot be sold. I don't know about you,
but I'd like MY game company to watch out for the quality of the games I
was going to SPEND my HARD EARNED CASH on! Wouldn't you?

Isn't that what reviews are for? Isn't that what these newsgroups are
for? If a company produces a bad game, let them hear about it in the
marketplace. I do NOT want Nintendo "looking out" for me like some
big brother. I am of reasonable intelligence and I think I can
decide for MYSELF whether I like a game or not.

1) It's their hardware
2) They don't want YOU screwing up their reputation (the one that
rebuilt the industry after Atari lost control with crummy games like ET
and Raiders of the Lost Ark [whoops.. weren't they the exact same games
with different title screens?]
3) Software is what makes money. Not the hardware. Hardware is just the
tool to get the software into the house. Good software makes more money.
4) Piss off a few key civil groups such as Christians, Jews, Moslems,
etc etc, and you'll find that your producted will be boycotted.
5) Yeah, they may dictate what you can and cannot do. But you'll never
hear a developer complain after they've earned a million dollars in one
year.

But if Nintendo came out with a number of bad games, how many people
in this group would be saying, "The games for Nintendo 64 mostly suck"
(not that they don't say that as it is)? That's the kind of thing
Nintendo wants to avoid -- a reputation for bad games. That situation
dogged the Saturn for months.

Nintendo isn't just looking out for themselves, mind you. They
have a reputation of producing high quality games. If Mercedes thought
"Boy, why should we delay these cars? Most people will be happy with
them! Forget about those added air bags and CD players!" then they
wouldn't exactly be a luxury car company anymore, now would they?
Ever wonder why many game magazines will rate about 2/3 of SNES
games are worth playing compared with 1/3 of the games for Genesis?
(This is a pretty big claim considering SNES has more game titles).
It's because Nintendo ensures quality of their products. Every company
and institution does it to an exstent. Nintendo is ensuring, by
quality check, high sales and a good reputation.

Nintendo likes quality games for their units. The system itself is graded on
the popularity of the software being used. Software is very important because
people will by games because of the reputation of the software company. Nintendo
wants the best possible games for the N64. They want them to be the best that
they can be. The N64 itself is completed, now they are waiting for software
teams to catch up. The specs of this machine are more a 128 bit console, so
the software companies are still learning what they can't or can do. It will
take a while before software companies can write their own tools, but when they
get it going, they role. Nintendo wants a console that will "wow" the Nintendo
supporter. They want you to be in awe of this new machine. What leads to this
image is the software. First impressions are important.
