As much as I'm personally interested in playing F-Zero X, I think
you've got to be incredibly biased toward Nintendo/against Sony
to suggest that the N64 is the system to have for racing games.
Sony has volumes of excellent racing games--many more quality
selections and variety on the PSX than N64--I really think
this is pretty difficult to argue against...

one thing the N64 can hold over PSX is that it is far better at
supporting 4 player games then PSX ever will be. (but i still prefer the
PSX)
And if you enjoy wrestling games, you want a Saturn anyway. ;)

Oh my God! Zelda is actually coming out? I didnt remember seeing the Jap
version coming out. US version coming out first? simultaneous release? not
likely.
I smell another 1 year delay.
If it comes out, well, I'll just "buy" the N64 again, play this Mario with a sword
game (at most 30 hours) return it, just like Mario.
Fun system for a few hours, but I just cant wait 2 years for a good game.
Remember their ad? Was it worth the wait? Definitely NO.
for who? I pre-ordered my copy at EB on 11/2/98. If I don't get my GOLD

Oh! I have been fooled! At first i got an N64 when it came out.. then i saw
all the cool Japanese anime games and RPG's, heck, even the fighting games.
Guess what i wanted then?? PSX thank you. Good thing my uncle came along
and gave me his with 10 kickin' games.
Including FF7.

Actually, bitter describes exactly how I felt for a long time. I was a
huge Nintendo fan on the old 8 bit system. I loved Zelda, Metroid,
Castlevania2, the MegaMan series . . . lots more. When the SNES came out,
I was ecstatic! Super Metroid. Megaman X 1-3, Zelda; a Link to the Past.
Then the N-64 came out.
And I waited. And waited. And waited. Meanwhile, Megaman X4 and
Castlevania; Symphony of the Night came out for the PSX. Finally, I, a
longtime Nintendo fan, broke down and bought a playstation. Why? Because
the games were just not there for the N-64.
I was very bitter. Now, finally, Zelda 64 has come. A step in the
right direction, to be sure. But it's too little, too late. I will
probably buy a N-64 someday to play Zelda, but for now, I will stick with
the PSX and its substantial library of titles.

Well, it is due out here in Japan on the 21st of November. There are adds
on tv for it and it's all over the gaming magazines. Heck, I even bought
64 Dream (a magazine) and got a nice sheet of Zelda stickers.
I guess you guys have never heard of Perfect Dark, Orge Battle 3, Earthbound
64, Castlevania 64, Jet Force Gemini, Donkey Kong. These are just a handful
of games that I'm looking forward to in 99. Zelda isn't their LAST hope but
just a beginning for better things to come. I say it gives the N64 a NEW
hope.

Well, when FFVII came out, there were plenty of idiots in this
newsgroup who said they boght a PSX just to play that game. So, if
SQUAREheads can do it, you sure can.

Well if Deception 2 is "turd", just call me a dung beetle!
Well, WCW/NWO World Tour and Revenge are definitely superior to any PSX

You know, I did just that. I bought a used PSX so I could own FF7. I rented
FF7 from blockbuster (7 day rental) and liked it. Liked it. I got to the
final battle between Sephiroth and Clouds party on the 6th day of the
rental. That was 3 months ago and I have rented 3 PSX titles since then. I
have rented about 10 N64 titles in that same 3 month period. Playstation
titles just don't seem to grab my attention as much as N64 titles. Just
recently I rented Metal Gear Solid (PSX). I loved it, I thought it was a
great game. I loved the AI and the levels and the interaction you had with
the enviroment. I right now have Twisted Metal 2 in my PSX and I enjoy it,
not quite love it, but I enjoy it.
Both the PSX and N64 have great titles on their side, the graphics are
comparable, the N64 does have the advantage (Though one can hardly compare
apples to oranges, in other words 64bit to 32bit). PSX has FMV, but who
really buys a game because it has FMV? Anyone out there? FMV is just a neat
add on. Like in Metal Gear Solid (PSX), with the A-Bomb footage. It was
neat, but had no direct impact on how I enjoyed the game itself.
So if we gamers could stop this useless N64 Vs. Playstation bitching, it
would be much appreciated. No matter how much you think whatever system
rules, you will never change anyone's opinion about anything. Buy whatever
system you like, please don't try and argue which is better, it is useless.
Each system has its ups and downs. If you can, own both systems and enjoy
each one to its potential.
If you read this far, good for you, this rant is over! Well, almost :)
FYI: I am not a 12 year old who enjoys cheesy Snow Boarding games or
wrestling games (No offense intended to fans of such titles). I got tired of
1080 within the first 3 hours of gameplay. I also don't think the N64 is a
childs system. It is a serious system with some serious potential. Though
that potential has been realized in only some games (Goldeneye, Forsaken,
and a few others.) I am sure owners of the N64 will be justified in their
purchase soon enough.
Okay, now this rant is truly over. If you read this whole thing, pat
yourself on the back.

Well then, I guess Doom and Quake and GoldenEye aren't all exactly the same?
What kind of a moron are you, exactly? How is Coolboarders 3 anything like
Tomb Raider? And what about Mario64 and Banjo? Mario Kart 64 and Diddy Kong

solid perpetrator, at that. Hell, I wanted to play Tomb Raider, but I already

A good point. FMV was nead, for example, in Megaman X4. BUt in general,
it's just a nice little extra. Not a selling point. SOmetimes, it can
even be too much.

Here here! Truer words were never spoken. (Well, truer words probably
were spoken, but not on this thread) Better is such a subjective term,
with a different meaning for each person. Some people value different
things. I suppose if you were just interested in japanese 'adult' games,
you'd have to say the Saturn was the 'best' system.
(A lone voice of readon . . . I bet it gets drowned out amid the ruckus)
Aeroguage, Clayfighters 33 1/3, Cruisin' USA, Shadows of the Empire, War
Gods,...Are those some of the turds your talking about ? I can keep going if
you like. True the psx has it's turds too, but with its larger library of
games, it can afford to have turds and still have plenty of gems too.
Nintendo can't afford to have turds, but seem to have more than its fair
share.

You should bother. Those two games are nothing alike. Tomb Raider is a

I've averaged out all the review scores on the

( I used the IGN site 'cause they list their scores
alongside the game listings, so I wouldn't have
to go to each game review individually.)
Well here we go ( drum roll please...)
N64 average game score is 6.8
PSX average score is 6.5
Now I know this is based on just one sites
reviews, but it give you a good idea anyway.
So you see, we are all insulting and flaming
each other over 0.3 points. It seem to me that the
two consoles are both average.

Well, MGS is the Playstations last hurrah.
To say Zelda is the last hope is a bit silly considering all the other

Rogue Squadron, Banjo 2, all sports games, GT World Tour, Micro
Machines, V-Rally, WCW Revenge, South Park, Perfect Dark....there is a
long list now of really top games.
It's easy to say that the Playstation has more percentage of crap, but can
you actually show how you arrived at that conclusion?

What about Mario and Banjo? Similar games....all two of them. Forget the

Two games have been reviewed for each system and were given the following
scores:
N64:
game 1 - 5.0
game 2 - 5.0
average = 5.0
PSX:
game 1 - 1.0
game 2 - 9.0
average = 5.0
Both systems have the same average, but game 2 for the PSX is the highest
rated game. Now, what should we call a "quality" game? If a "quality"
game is one scoring a 5.0 or greater, then the N64 has more quality games.
On the other hand, if a "quality" game is one scoring a 7.5 or greater,
then the PSX has more quality games. I believe the argument is that one
system has _more_ quality games than the other. The average score can not
be used to settle this dispute.
What would be extremely interesting to see is this: Decide on a minimum
score a game must receive in order to be considered a quality game. I
would suggest something around 7.5. Then compare the _number_ of N64
games scoring 7.5 or better to the _number_ of PSX games scoring 7.5 or
better.
Just trying to put my statistics degree to some good use.
Actually, the reason is that you're an idiot.

OK enough system bashing I guess...this thread is getting a little tedious (I
think it reached an all time low in the "turd" repartee a few days ago). I'm
just afraid I'm at a total loss when honestly trying to understand N64
fandom. I mean, I own the system & I've really tried to get my $$ worth out
of it but I can't help but feel let down, especially in the face of its
technical capabilities, which apparently Nintendo has seen fit to "squander"
(in my narrow point of view I guess) on titles I personally don't enjoy,
though it looks like quite a crowd does enjoy them. Its just unfortunate
that the system didn't expand its demographic to include freaks like me,
member of RPGamers Anonymous. I am somewhat excited about Zelda & am
patiently awaiting more games that fit my style, but until then I think my
PSX will get more wear-&- tear, especially with that PocketStation thingy
coming out...the concept of developing my characters stats while I'm at work
just seems so incredibly alluring.
A bow to the poster before me. I respect your argument.

I think there is wrestling in the Olympics but besides that and high-school
wrestling... wrestling isn't a sport. It's an act, a show, just really
baddly-done stunts (I'm sorry if this comes as a shock to you...).
-quirk999
I found it innovative but entirely lacking in fun.
Some of those stunts require a high degree of skill and dexterity. I'm
impressed at their physical skills.

One thing I have noticed about usenet, is that regardless of how good their
ideas may or may not be, anyone who is pretentious enough to comment on
grammar or punctuation is simply not worth listening too.

Come on Kyle, of course wrestling has competition. These guys have to compete
with eachother to see who can over-act the most! ;)

Yeah, you're right. Oh, wait. There's Final Fantasy 8, Oddworld: Abe's
Exoddus, Global Domination, Bust-a-Groove, Daikatana, Legacy of Kain: Soul
Reaver, Lunar, Master of Monsters, Shadow Madness, Silent Hill, Silhouette
Mirage, StarCon, Tail Concerto and Tiny Tank to look forward to. So I guess
MGS *isn't* the Playstation's (note apostrophe usage) last hurrah after all.
Whaddya know?

: Giving the average score for the games on each system may be a little
: misleading here. Consider this (highly simplified) example...
: Two games have been reviewed for each system and were given the following
: scores:
[Example deleted]
: What would be extremely interesting to see is this: Decide on a minimum
: score a game must receive in order to be considered a quality game. I
: would suggest something around 7.5. Then compare the _number_ of N64
: games scoring 7.5 or better to the _number_ of PSX games scoring 7.5 or
: better.
I'd also like to see the variance (standard error, standard deviation) of
the scores. Is a difference-in-means of 0.3 really signifigant? (I
personally doubt it).
: Just trying to put my statistics degree to some good use.
Hm. Stats degree, U of Iowa address. That's where Hogg[1] is from,
isn't it?

Nevertheless, I think it makes for pretty darn lame videogames. I'd rather
watch the pros.
Actually...hell yeah. But when are they arriving? This is important because
when the Dreamcast is available, i'll be jumping on it like a fly on shit & I
might not have the $$ left for N64 games. Please provide info. I'm extremely
intoxicated right now so pardon the telegraphic language. STOP.
I don't know if it's just me, but I generally associate the usage of "turd"
with someone of limited intellect.
Well.. i don't know about US, but that's see....
Dragon Quest 7, Final Fantasy 8 (probably 9 as well),
Chrono Trigger 2, SaGa Frontier 2, Genso Suikoden 2,
Tomb Raider 3, Resident Evil 3, etc.. the BIG name
titles goes on and on... oh boy, i guess it will be
a very LONG hurrah don't you think ?? ^_^
KAI
Ok, here you go. I did what you suggested, using 7.0 as a minimum score.
Here is how it looks:
Nintendo 57%
PSX 55%
That is not a big difference. The only thing is the volume of psx games over
N64 which give us a larger choice of games.
Here are my figure ( 'cause I'm poor at math :-) -now dont bitch at me, I
know that more games exist than this for both systems, but these were the one
they had reviews for.
N64 total - 102
N64 7.0 or greater - 53
PSX total - 313
PSX 7.0 or greater - 171
If my calculations are wrong, I'm sure someone will tell me :-)
Later.

"Blood & Souls for my Lord Arioch"
I doubt that a 0.3 is signifigant. Like I said, these scores were taken from
one site only. To be more precise I would have to go to all review sites and
find the average score for each game individually and thats too much work :-)
I did post percentages of games over 7.0 on this thread if your interested
though.
Thanx.
not complaining or anything just making an observation..............ever
notice psx sequals are numbered and nintendos has a 64 behind
it..............weird

That proves nothing...just because games are getting released that YOU
don't want to play...does't mean that they are the genre that someone
else wants to play.

Honestly? No, because development titles have a habit of s t r e t c
h i n g itself into a LONG time...or simply fading away.

Oh, ok. <foot in mouth>
:)
Just like SNES games you to be "Super"....
Thanks for the data. Given your numbers below, the results are:
N64:
Percent = 100% * 53/102 = 52%
Standard Error = 100% * sqrt((53/102 * 50/102) / 102) = 5%
95% Confidence Interval = (42%, 61%)
PSX
Percent = 100% * 171/313 = 55%
Standard Error = 100% * sqrt((171/313 * 142/313) / 313) = 3%
95% Confidence Interval = (49%, 60%)
Elric is right. The difference between the percentages is not very large.
In fact the confidence intervals overlap, which suggests no significant
difference between the percentages of quality games for the two consoles.
However, I'm not sure that these percentages are of much practical use to
consumers. Back when I was deciding between the two consoles, it was the
greater number of quality games for the PSX that made me choose this
system. I am perfectly content with my PSX and there has never been a
shortage of quality games for me to play. I can only see the percentages
being important to those who pick their games by standing in front of the
display case with eyes shut and then randomly point at their next gaming
purchase. For those who have adopted this buying strategy, neither system
is the clear winner here. For myself the PSX had the edge due to the
greater number (171 vs. 53) of quality games.
But, to each his own. If you must side with one system, side with the one
that has the majority of games that you want to play. Peace.
P.S. Boss Hogg is still alive and kicking at the U of Iowa.

no, you have a wish list of future (potentially) good games
face the truth, the playstation has more decent software than the n64, i
have an n64 as well, but i only bought it for nintendo exclusive
