For the first time, we had arranged ourselves into a dedicated Demo
Crew, and held mini-tourneys alongside to make us look cool. And yes,
we did look cool, since Esdevium had gotten a couple of vampire cards
blown up to A3 size and mounted them on displays! How professional did
we look?!(Answer - very). With that and the aid of a few posters, we
made ourselves a tidy play area. That just left Mike Nudd, Andy Brown,
Pierre Rebstock, and myself to run some events. So we did!
Thursdays entertainment was a standard tourney, 2 rounds plus a final.
I wasn't intending to play, but to make up numbers to a round number
(14, I think), I picked up the first deck I could find in my bag - a
standard Tzimisce intercept deck with a toolbox of combat. It relied
fairly heavily on getting out Meshenka, getting an eternal vigilance
and some retainers, and blocking stuff. I had played it in 2 or three
tourneys in various incarnations, but had never so much as Time-out
0.5VP from it. I was shocked and amazed, therefore, to get 1 point in
the first game! In the second game I surpassed myself by getting 4 VPs
and a table win.
The final, however, was a different story. Seated were:
Myself (Tzimisce),
Martin Cubberley (Ravnos / Dominate sleaze bleed),
Phillipe Lang (Anson Abuse deck - bring out Anson, Minion Tap,
Golconda, plus other tricks),
Will Lee (Cailean-beats-the-crap-out-of-everone-at-long-range deck,
featuring, errr, Cailean and lots of Sewer Lids), and
Jon Cooper (Beast + Theo = Pain).
I got a fairly bad draw (3 Meshenkas, one Lambach) in my opening crypt
and my library had no combat cards other than Drawing out the Beast
for 10 cards. Great against Theo and Beast, no really. Even better
against Cubberley's Trap and Apparition combo. Magic. Without shifting
cards, and after making a few amateurish moves, Lambach and Meshenka
were kicked in (TM) and I was ousted fairly swiftly after that.
Phillipe was also getting the rub, as Anson had failed to hit the
deck, so instead a load of presence weenies were in effect. Not good
against the eternally vigilant Cailean with a Raven Spy. Once I was
ousted, Jon and Will proceeded to sandwich Martin and Phillipe, and
once they were subdued, Will went through Jon like a dose of the salts
(Jon not having enough ranged damage or dodge cards to make a dent).
Therefore, the winner was Will Lee (his first win of the season, and
not bad since he has had a forced retirement from the scene in the
last few months since he moved Daaaan Saaaath).
After that, folks hung around and played Heroclicks, whilst I had to
disappear back up to Watford to Take Care of Business, Working
Overtime (actually, this meant going back, driving to Harrow, playing
MORE VTES with my thursday playgroup, driving the missus home, driving
up to a garage to drop off my car for a service the next day, parking
up and walking the 2 miles back home. I got to bed at 2am - a nice
early night).
Friday, I did the whole thing ALL OVER AGAIN (up earlier than god
intended, off to London, into Olympia). However, today's event was the
Sealed Deck event - my favourite since it's a level playing field, and
you get shiny new cards! We had 15 people show, leaving us with 3
tables of 5 (tidy!). Again, it was 2 rounds plus a final. We only had
5 clans to choose from (for some reason, we didn't get any Toreador
decks. Go figure!), but this tied in nicely with the turnout too.
Unfortunately, I got Malkavian. Bugger. The weakest deck out of the 6
(due to the Dominate / Dementation switch). However, I was very happy
with the trading, as I managed to acquire another 2 Demenatation
skillcards, lots of weenie-ish vamps with Dem - including Uncle George
(a great 5 cap !malk with DEM), quite a bit of stealth, 2 Comas, a
Giants Blood, and 2 game of Malkavs. I ended up with a 90 card deck,
but 27 of these cards were stealth, and about 20 of these cards were
bleed modifiers. Owchy. Out went the Pulse of Canaille, the
Misdirections, Flak Jacket, and other rubbish; in came lots of sneak,
and lots of bleed. Interestingly, the Flamethrowers and disguised
weapons stayed in.
In the first game, I got REALLY lucky. I was being preyed on by a
Nossie deck and was preying on Andy Brown's Tremere. First Vampire out
was Douggie Netchurch, Second Uncle George. So, I proceeded to sneak
bleed. Then, I pulled off a Game of Malkav and won 6 pool. Then I
influenced Leandro. Then he got a Blood Doll, dementation, and a
Secure Haven. From there on in, I was bleeding for a bucketload. I
ended up with 38 pool, 6 minions out (including Leandro and Rachel
Brandywine), and 5 VP. Wow. My favourite moment was when I got cross
table rushed by Mr Theo Bell, I played Diguised Weapon and
Flamethrower, and Mr Bell bugged off to long range for a quick dodge.
Hehehehe. In the second game, funnily enough, word got around, and I
was crushed from the outset. But 5VP and a table win saw me into the
final.
The Final saw:
A very tired Pierre Rebstock - Ventrue
Richard Thomas - Malkavian
David Hammond (me) - Malkavian
Ian Turner - Nossie
Rafe Ball - Brujah.
Bad news for me - being bled upon by my worst enemy: More Malkavians.
So I did the only logical thing - contested all his vampires! He
brings out Douggie Netchurch on turn 2, and then I contested him for
10 rounds. In that time, I managed to draw Zoe, Ohanna, Muddy the
Muddled Vampire Hunter, and Uncle George. Bleeding for a few each turn
at stealth managed to seriously weaken the Nossie, but I had to yield
Netchurch with only 2 pool left. However, by this time, I had built up
a pile of Telepathic Misdirections, Wakes and Zoe was ready to bounce.
This managed to save my bacon as I put down the Nossies first. Then I
was left with the daunting task of getting the Brujah, as Pashek was
out to play and ready to smackdown! I managed to bluff my way through
him with some sneaky bleeding, though. At the same time, Pierre
power-bled his way through Richard, and was on me. I was very weak,
with no votes, and he had Arika and Queen Anne. I pretty much folded
after 3 turns. Winner = Pierre, who then went off to pass out.
Later that evening, Andy Brown said "lets do another tourney!". "OK"
said enough people. *Groan*.
For this one, I played an experimental Shambling Horde deck using
Setites. In the first game, I got distracted by my Girlfriend calling
me on the phone, and within 2 seconds of me hanging up, Cubberley had
ousted me. I didn't even see how until afterwords! And I could have
prevented it! Tiredness and alcohol blurred out the rest of the event,
but I think I got a could of points somehow. I also dimly remember
Mike Nudd winning. God know what with, or how, or why! By this time,
it was 3am, I was gone, and it was lights out Vienna.
I woke up the next morning to find we had managed to fit 6 people in a
hotel room that really should have only fit about 3 at best. I also
had jagged memories of the previous night, and a jagged head to match.
After a quick bout of coughing and groaning, dashed to get some
breakfast and rushed to the play area to find... that we were unlikely
to start before 12pm. I got out of bed early for this. Arse. I
consolled myself by spending an obscene amount on HeroClicks boosters
and passed many a happy second opening them all and shouting things
like "They must be mine!!!" and "I am the master now!!!". Then someone
gave me a beer and I chilled out a bit.
Saturday (for it was by then) was the National Cup event - the most
prestigious event in the UK VTES Calender. It is worth noting at this
point that Rob Treasure had won the event for 5 years running, and it
was also worth noting that Rob crashed out early the previous night
whilst the rest of us had a late night tourney. As a result, Rob was
looking fairly confident and relaxed, whilst the rest of us looked
like extras from Micheal Jackson's "Thriller".
By the time we finally got underway, I had chosen the deck I was to
play... the Setite / True Brujah deck I had knocking around. It is a 5
discipline deck, which is at heart a Free States Rant deck (trying to
get Form of Corruption into play and reducing your prey's vampires to
0 blood so you can steal them), but has quite a few Rewind Times in
there to screw up your prey's pool gain and other stuff (Minion Tap?
NO. Blood Doll? NO. Hostile Takover? NO. Temptation of Greater Power?
NO. Bums Rush at me? NO. etc). However, the best laid plans etc meant
that I never had one in my hand when I REALLY needed it. Still, I
managed to abuse the card, lock down at least one table, and get 3 VP
and a table win. However, this was as good as it got, as that's all I
scored all day. Still the best I've done in a national event for a
couple of years. Meanwhile, at the top end of the scale, we could see
that Rob Treasure was manipulating himself into pole position nicely
(we could tell by the noise levels on adjacent tables where Rob was
sitting. Typical cries of "NO WAY!" and "TREASURE, YOU ARE A SLEAZY
BASTARD!" only brought home the fact that we were in the presence of a
master.)
I have no idea of the seedings into the final (I suspect Rob T and
Barny Baker were right up there). But as I saw it, the seating was:
Barny Baker - (His famous) Gangrel Royalty deck (Angus, Katarina,
Ingrid, ToGP, Pain).
Jon Cooper - Weenie Thaumaturgy Cryptic Mission fun.
Rob Treasure - A degenerate Anneke deck (Anneke blocks EVERYTHING and
Obediences. Leandro or some huge bugger calls votes... in particular,
Dramatic Upheavals (more on this later).
Martin Cubberley - Nephertiti / Mind Rape deck (sneak and bleed, steal
other vampires for a turn, flush them out of blood with a Heidleburg,
bleed some more).
Ross Howard - Assamite Free States Rant deck.
For those of you with long memories, these are EXACTLY THE SAME
PLAYERS AS LAST YEAR'S NATIONAL FINAL (except for Ross Howard). A
coincidence? Not really. Anyway, they FINALLY started play at about
7pm (after an hour of dilly-dallying which consisted mainly of arguing
about who should sit where, and getting snacks and beer). After about
20 minutes, Barny had crucified Martin's setites by beating 7 bells
out of them. Nephertiti and Kaytall were in the bin, and Martin had
about 8 pool left. Barny was looking a bit ropey, however, after being
Cryptic Mission-ed for loads. Rob Treasure had done roughly nothing
(except bring out Anneka and Leandro), as had Ross (since he had far
too few votes to pass any Rants, and the vampires he needed to Rant
down were huge!). Then, right on cue (as in "it happened at about the
same time last year") Rob calls a Dramatic Upheaval to change places
with Barny. There is more arguing (roughly 20 mins this time, last
year this vote took about 1 1/2 hours) and succeeded. However, this
was his big mistake, as taking down Martin took a lot longer than he
imagined (since he had to leave at least one of his two vampires up to
block Jon's weenies).
As a result, Rob was looking a lot less healthy when Jon sent in his
final wave of weenies - largely because Ross had managed to bring up 2
intercept locations, allowing him to block most of Anneke's actions
(even WITH obf). Rob was also in trouble from behind, as he finally
seemed to run out of Obediences and tried to block "on manual" against
the weenie horde... just as Jon pulled a Burst of Sunlight. Both
Leandro and Magic Weenie X ended up in the bin. This sealed Rob's
game, as Barny cruised through Jon, ate Rob's vampires, and set upon
Ross. By this time, Barny had 6 vampires (including 2 ToGP-ed
vampires) and more pool than God intended. By about 11pm Ross had been
dispatched (that's right, folks, a 4 hour Final), coming 3rd in the
final, but Barny took the Laurels!!! We have a new UK No.1!!! For the
rest of the evening, we drank, played Heroclicks, and passed out...
Sunday... errr... well, by then I was truly messed up. Lack of sleep,
too much beer, and a throat that was just pure pain from smoking
constantly for 72 hours (kids, don't do it - it's bad!). I drew demo
duty, and did a couple of demo games with some newbies whilst Mike ran
his combat event. Only 8 people showed for it (most of the old skool
overslept as a result of fevered celebrations the previous night), but
it seemed to go OK, right until Mike decided he was too tired to go on
too! I think Alex Hall won with a ANIMALISM deck that bugged out to
long range and Carrion Crows / Aid From Bat-ted everyone. Mike and I
said our farewells and left, me geting home at about 7pm (Mike
probably later). All I remember is getting in, sitting down, and
waking up at 7am the next morning!
So, BEST GENCON EVER!!! Well, nearly. MUCH better than last year, not
quite as good as Manchester or indeed Loughborough in previous years.
Noticeable by his absence was Legbiter and the Porstmouth crew in
general (Leggy, where were you?). Also, this year, we have started to
see regulars from overseas (The Durings, Phillipe and Francois from
Paris...). This is a GOOD THING!
ETERNAL THANKS to Andy Brown, Mike, and Pierre for making it all
happen at our end, and thanks again to Jeff and Matt at Esdevium and
Chad and Lisa at White Wolf. Word on the street is that there will be
another Gencon in April next year. Any takers? ;)
DH
First of all, thanks for some great playing fun!

Yup, he did :) You've seen that deck (plus bleed/bleed-defence) in the
hands of my wife at an earlier Watford-event.

There's a good chance you'll see us invading you again next Watford
tourney. Ha! New rules - new combat *grin*
Sten During
Thanks to you and Mike and all the other UK princes and players who helped
organize these events.
Steve
In Corsica, admiring the girlies/mountains/storms and absorbing the
rays. Garry WAS there, though - he is a Portsmouth guy. But i was with
you In Spirit, along with my favourite, and, arguably, signiature card
[ToGP]. Well done Barney [kisses Baker sneakers in appropriately
humble fashion] on successfully abusing it and bad luck, Rob! i STILL
think you are the GREATEST player this great game has ever seen and,
i'm sure, so does Barney. Also, congrats to Will Lee on HIS victory.
He is i think the most underestimated player in UK VTES: REALLY scary
and creative and i'm glad it has come off for him finally!!
Also, this year, we have started to

Indeed! Those guys, and that girl, are GOOOOD. Plus, she is
BEAUTFIUL!!

O, i think we can do that. And well done YOU on a terrific tourney!

Dave, mike and abdy and the others made made it happen - well done on
a cool tourney - reports came in my my spy's - ie players from other
games who had a look at the tournement but they were finalists in half
a dozen things so couldn't play.
as for a april gencon - you may get a contingent from newcastle if the
tourne is on saturday - 6 hours travel time each way is a killer.
Dave - when are you next doing a saturday tournment???
yeah i know its been a long time but the games become fun again :)
see ya all soon
anam and ian
Hmmm... well, I have always aimed for Sundays, since it is easier for
both the pub and us (many people have commitments on Saturdays).
However, I will look at changing a few things in the next few weeks. I
have a feeling there has been a general air of dissatisfaction from
the players at the venue of late (i.e. the Flag is going downhill
fast). I will seriously look to change it very soon.
DH
Well after four days going hell for leather at GenCon, it's taken me a
while to recover but at last I can add my thoughts to Dave's earlier
post. I think I can safely say that a) we had a better turnout than
last year, and b) a good time was had by all. In addition, our general
presence was more forcable than last year, and with continuous demo
sessions running throughout the convention, we made more of an impact
on the general delegate masses.
I've tried to incorporate as many details as possible in the reports
below. Unfortunately due to our hectic schedule, bad note-taking, a
lack of sleep and a fair amount of beer, a lot of details have ended
up a bit hazy/sketchy.
---
THURSDAY (standard constructed)
Rafe Ball: 0 + 0 = 0
Will Lee: 0 + 3 = 3 (5th)
Jon Cooper: 4 + 0 = 4 (4th)
Anthony Lown: 0 + 0 = 0
Lamp: 0 + 0 = 0
Ian Turner: 0 + 1 = 1
Phillipe Lang: 3 + 2 = 5 (tied 1st)
Andy Brown: 0 + 0 = 0
Adrian Deacon: 0 + 0 = 0
Martin Cubberley: 4 + 1 = 4 (tied 1st)
Mike Nudd: 0 + 2 = 2
Manuel Corte-Real: 0 + 0 = 0
Dave Hammond: 2 + 3 = 5 (tied 1st)
The final was:
Dave bleeding
Martin bleeding
Phillipe bleeding
Will bleeding
Jon
I'm afraid I can't remember the exact details of who killed who in
what order but IIRC Will won overall in the end. If anyone has any
more details they can share, then please do! :)
---
FRIDAY (limited sealed deck)
Nick Korna: 0 + 0 = 0
Keith Cornell: 0 + 0 = 0
Richard Thomas: 4 + 1 = 5 (tied 2nd)
Ross Howard: 1 + 0 = 1
Niki Sehmi: 0 + 1 = 1
Ian Turner: 1 + 1 = 2 (5th)
Rafe Ball: 0 + 3 = 3 (4th)
Phillipe Lang: 1 + 0 = 1
Owen Springer: 0 + 0 = 0
Andy Brown: 0 + 1 = 1
Dave Hammond: 5 + 0 = 5 (tied 2nd)
Simon Croome: 0 + 0 = 0
Manuel Corte-Real: 0 + 0 = 0
Paul Mansfield: 0 + 0 = 0
Pierre Rebstock: 4 + 5 = 9 (1st)
Unfortunately Dave's notes from the day aren't particularly clear, and
we're clearly a few VPs missing. Can someone fill in the missing
details? This was my day of demoing, so I missed out on most of the
action myself. Apparently the final was:
Pierre bleeding
Richard bleeding
Dave bleeding
Ian bleeding
Rafe
And apparently Dave scored 2 VPs coming second, whereas Pierre won the
remaining 3 with his Ventrue to win overall. Lucky Pierre got the
uncut sheet of CE cards as his prize!
Note that on Friday night Andy Brown also ran his own constructed
tournament, for which I think they were 12 players IIRC. I'm sure
he'll post the full details in due course. I won though, so hurrah for
me! :)
---
SATURDAY (standard constructed)
The following players shows, although I don't have their scores or
positionings, as they all went on Dave's computer:
Sten During (Toreador Grand Ball deck)
Beatrice During
Alex Hall
Phillipe Lang
Arnaud Clevel
Francois Alix
James Lewis (Inner Circle voting sleaze)
Jackie Eves (weenie Sabbat with Vitel bleed deck)
Ian Turner
Ross Howard (Assamite Free States Rant deck)
Rafe Ball
Martin Cubberley (Setite Free States Rant deck)
Will Lee
Jon Cooper (weenie Cryptic Mission)
Barny Baker (titled Gangrel with Pot plus ToGP sleaze)
Paul Reid-Bowen
Manuel Corte-Real (Assamite rush)
Mike Nudd (Blood Brothers toolbox)
Rob Treasure (high cap Tor/Ven plus ToGP sleaze)
Adam Payne (Salubri/!Ventrue combo)
Pierre Rebstock
Matt Green (Toreador voting sleaze)
Alice Coggins
Tom Kassel
Terence Hinds
Matt Avery
Dave Hammond (Setite/Trujah Free States Rant deck)
Phil Mattingley
Gary Scarlet
Jenny Merrick (Lasombra toolbox)
I'm afraid I didn't see all the decks played that day, so there are a
lot of blanks. The esteemed James Coupe acted as Judge for the day,
whilst Andy Brown pulled demo duties.
IIRC the final consisted of
Barny bleeding
Jon bleeding
Rob bleeding
Ross bleeding
Martin
Again, I can't remember exactly what happened, but the guys played for
nearly 4 hours straight. IIRC Rob got 1 VP, and Barny got the
remaining 4 to be declared the winner. Again if someone can shed some
more light then please let me know!
---
SUNDAY
Most people stayed in bed to recover on Sunday morning, whilst many
more opted for the Herocliz tournament taking place on the gournd
floor. In the end there was only eight of us.
James Lewis (Pot/For Lazaverinus/Kyle combo): 19 + 4 = 23 (5th)
Alex Hall (weenie Animalism): 19 + 13 = 32 (1st)
Sten During (Salubri/Potence plus Lazaverinus): 20 + 8 = 28 (3rd)
Beatrice During (Gangrel with Wynn): 21 + 8 = 29 (2nd)
Manuel Corte-Real (Assamites): 4 + 5 = 9
Mike Nudd (Tzimisce): 3 + 21 = 24 (4th)
Tony Carew (Assamites): 7 + 6 = 13
Chris Smith (Obf/Tha various): 0 + 0 = 0
Poor old Chris chose to play with his own old deck, even though it
wasn't particularly combat-orientated. He was such a good sport that
he played through both rounds too. Unfortunately the hall closed much
earlier than expected, and so we passed on the final, and just counted
the points scored over the two rounds. And so Alex was declared the
victor, and was awarded a rubber stake for his prize!
---
So there you go. It's difficult to know what else to mention, as most
of it would only make sense if you were there at the time. Lots of us
spent money on Heroclix - in fact so much so that it was starting to
turn into a competition to see who could spend the most! I was happy
as I managed to get some more X-men for the missus, plus IIRC I won
all the Heroclix games that I played over the weekend :)
There were also a lot of arguments. Will got pissed off on Friday
night as I let him talk himself into an imaginary table deal which
went in my favour. Plus Rob Treasure ended up going hammer and tongs
with several people over the course of Saturday's event.
Out of the three boxes of free card 'spares' we took on Thursday
morning, it was all gone by the close of Sunday. The 'freebie' card
strategy was a good move, and there were gamers circling like vultures
all weekend to rummage through them. The only down side is that as
many cards were snacked by veteran players, when the idea was they
were there for newbies. Tsk. :)
And it was Pierre's birthday! Unfortunately he seemed a bit spaced
out, and the celebrations were fairly subdued as he headed off with a
bunch of the guys to Barny's place on Saturday night.
Although Dave's already said this, I feel I should say again that a
ton of thanks need to go to White Wolf and Esdevium for their support
(and our acommodation was top notch!). More thanks should go to WotC
for sticking us in the brochure (twice) and for letting us get on with
it. Also thanks to Adrian Deacon for fleshing out with more product
for prizes, plus more thanks to all the guys that helped us run and/or
judge our demos and events over the course of the convention.
And to close, the CE cards do seem to be pretty cool. The background
colours are a pain in the arse, but the new vampires and new library
cards definitely get a thumbs up! It seems most people can't wait for
them to go legal...
Regards,
Mike Nudd
P.S.
FYI the next upcoming events I'm aware of in the area are:
Sunday 29th September (Watford)
Saturday 5th October (London)
I'm sure more details will be forwarded around in due course.
I did get 1 VP in my second round match.
The Magical snakes worked to a degree at least.

The final had
Will - 0VPs
Barny - 0VPs
Mike - 3VPs
Jon - 0VPs
Martin - 2VPs
Whilst I only came joint 7th in the tourney, I was happy seeing
Setites win the night. I think everyone had a reasonable time
(hope so) and if I am at GenCon next year, then I'll run another!
Now just to see when my fiancee will let me come out and play again.
Mike's deck follows. Don't forget regular meetings in Cambridge
on Tuesday evenings upstairs at The Graduate!
