Free rent really isn't as good an idea as it seems. After a few months of
free rent on the old JudyMUD, the inflation went overboard. 5th level
characters carried around billions (literally) of coins, and had the best
equipment in the game. I myself managed to play a thief (on a MUD where
stealing from plyers is disabled (bleh), thereby making skills such as
hide and sneak useless since everyone is so nice) up to 13th level within
a few hours of playing time. It got rather boring (after about 10 hours
playing time) and I eventually decided to give away my character's items
(and the items belonging to the 5 storage characters I had accumulated).
This is by no means an attempt to flame JudyMUD, which was a very good MUD
aside from the abundance of equipment and ultra-powerful characters.

Ack! How did "I managed" wind up at the bottom of my post? I'm sure I didn't
write it there...
