I have a question for all you veteran DIKUMUDders out there. And
as my header states, I want to know how you all feel about Guild Wars? I
am aware this question may spark a flame war, but I would like to know
the general opinion of all the MUDders, so flame away.
Personally, I find that it is a waste of time, and very
counter-productive. Would you play on a MUD where such blatant PKing
happens? Should players turn on other players? Are there ways to prevent
such an occurence? Please don't mail me, send all opinions to this
group. Thanks.

By "Guild Wars" I assume you mean organized groups of players who
hunt down each other for fun.

Counter-productive as opposed to what? Slaughtering brainless
monsters all day? Sure, you're much more likely to be killed by a
player, but that's one reason _why_ it's so fun. Most people I know
who are opposed to player killing take MUDs way too seriously. They're
just games (most of the combat variety, at any rate), and should be
treated as such. I've put weeks of playing time into characters,
and then fallen over laughing when I'm robbed blind or summoned and
killed. That's the whole point of games... To have fun. And there's
really not much fun in monster-chopping.

Would I play? YES, as long as it's not limited to silly guilds.
Guilds are fun, but I like to play a loner now and then.

Preventing it isn't hard, really. Just make it so players can't
attack each other. There are ways around that though (buying 100
pets, ordering them to attack players), but they can be fixed too.
You'd really be driving away a lot of potential players though.

Don't tell me that's the name of your "guild"... ;-)

Personally, I think Guild wars are unproductive. I think the
loyalty and camaraderie inspired by guilds is a good thing, but
when you get into the area of sparking conflict just to incite
another guild, it's gone too far. This attitude of 'You killed
my guild brother, prepare to die!', is very negative. On
GenericMud, where we have a core group of about 15 or so people
who have been playing for a LONG time... I guess they must feel
that this is the only way to amuse themselves. I think it is our
job, as gods to find other ways for them to amuse themselves.

Certainly.

Negative? How so? Not unless the victim isn't prepared to be
attacked. I certainly would if I'd killed someone's brother.
These kinds of situations also tend to promote roleplaying
(like what you said above as opposed to 'You friggin' asshole!
You're dead!'), which is also a 'good thing'.

It IS the only way they can amuse themselves, really. Ever played
a carreer level 20 character when another of your characters was
already immortal? When I get bored of that I usually do something
new... Start up a thief clan, dedicated to lightening the loads
of other peoples' pockets, or even go on a player-killing rampage
just for kicks. Sure, new players might be terrorized for a little,
then some "player-killer-killer" group sprouts up, and both usually
annhiliate each other. It's kind of an endless cycle, and everyone
has a real blast in the long run. ;-)

Yeah, but only if you're really opposed to it.

Well, Dark Shadow's has a working guild wars system that doesn't use PK'ing.
The total system is not finished yet, and so only the bare bones setup is
working, but when completed, it adds a lot of role playing to our already
advanced guild system. Players go for points, and the guild with the most
points is basically considered the #1 guild, and you also have guild banks
in which you can deposit cash for your guild to use, and more. Plus, our
guilds are run by our Dieties, which are unlike any other MUD! DSD has made
a use for those bored 21st levelers! Check us out, I think you'll like the
setup...

Well, on Eltanin we had a similar sort of thing happen. It was mages vs.
warriors, thieves vs. clerics, monks vs bards, etc. Eltanin has an arena so
this made it so that the deaths were not "real" and you didn't loose any
equipment. I thought it was a kinda neat idea, but it never really caught on
and has since ceased. I used to play on an LP mud (Tsunami) that had regularly
scheduled events such as this (it was called Class Wars), except that the
whole mud participated, rather thatn each class choosing a champion like they
did on eltanin. Essentially, the player file was not saved during the war on
Tsunami, so the effects were similar to the arena area. The idea of a class
war is kinda fun. If it is a regularly scheduled, well planned and executed
process, it hurts noone (except maybe some egos).
