A player inquired about canals, in particular whether they still
exist.

I believe canals were added along with option BIG_CITY back in in
Empire 2, ca. 1995. Big cities could serve as harbors for "small"
ships. A ship was "small" when its lcm + 2 * hcm cost was at most 60.
Canals weren't documented then.

In 4.3.0 (2006), we made this less obscure:

1. We added ship capability "canal", and gave it exactly to the ships
that could navigate canals before. To find them, use "show ship c".

2. We added sector navigability "canal", and gave it exactly to the
sectors that had canals before (big cities). "show sector s" has a
navigability column.

3. We covered canals in "info Ship-types" and "info Sector-types".

You see, we didn't change any rules, we just made canals more
discoverable, and more open to deity customization.

There are no canals in this game, since BIG_CITY is disabled and the
deity didn't give other sector types canal navigability,

so, have you had your 25 grams of chocolate this week?
We now take some time to discuss, compare, and contrast the various classic
literay works involving dystopian societies. I could start with Brave New World
or even Ayn Rand's Anthem. But you can probably gleen from the first sentance of
this anno, I am compelled to start with Orwell's Nineteen Eighty Four.
Basically, this novel should scare the plasma right out of your body. When O'Brien
lectures Winston on power (Summary: It is more desireble to hold all the power
and be impoverished than to live in luxary with no power) the motovation of
every totalitarian dictator in history is explained. Concepts like the Thougt
Police, Big Brother, Double Think, and Emmanuel Goldstein are only supporting
structures for the channeling and concetration of power.
There are two places I am pretty sure you will not find a copy of Nineteen Eighty Four -
North Korea and MSNBC headquarters.
Now go enjoy your chocolate ration.

There are those that like the water.
There are those that don't like the water but swim none the less
But then there are those that know some Evil Leviathan will rise up
and destroy all that attempt the water and THEN the Kraken comes.

I am the later.

"My first wife was a retard. She's a pilot now."
On that note, we are obviously discussing "Idiocracy". This is a lighter version
of a dystopian world. If you haven't seen the movie, 500 years from now, all the
stupid people have lots of kids. the smarts one have none. So everybody is as
dumb as a tree stump. Now enter Joe Average, who has been asleep for 500 years.
So the movie touches on a truth about modern society today. Highly educated,
successful people have lower birth rates than impoverished people. The connection
between impoverished and low intelligence is not made in the movie though. However
advanced countries like Japan and most of western Europe are seeing aging populations
and low birth rates. those societies are just not having kids. Scary stat - in
Japan, adult diapers outsell infant diapers.
But is this trend the end of the world as we know it? Probably not. But don't
we all have that feeling sometimes that big brother is watching you?
Sometimes?

Tonight on Dytopian Theater, will will duscuss another genre of the theme, and
that genre is music. We are especially keying on on the Rush Album "2112".
Rush, as a musical group, was at the height of its popularity during my high
school and college days - I.E., my formative days for my musical tastes. While
I had an appreciation of their talent, I was not a particular fan of their material.
But they were several pegs above such talentless hacks as REO Speedwagon and
Foreigner.
Then comes the announcement that Rush is going to be playing on campus. The
Assembly Hall at Univ. of Illinois can seat over 16K for a concert.
Now we come to the problem. The two clowns in the dorm room next to me are Rush
fans. and they score front row tickets in the lottery. for the next 5 weeks
they play continous Rush music at high volume. thanks to them, I know HATE all
Rush music. I can't change the radio station fast enough when one of their songs
is played.
and that is my review of 2112.

> Announcement from Dystopian Paradise, (#8) dated Wed Jan 8 01:17:31 2014
Side Note - Leading up to the concert, my neighbors were unbearable in their
joy for getting front row seats. they were on a massive high that built each day
as the concert got closer. the day of, the afternoon of, and the evening of,
they seemed about to explode with this non-drug induced emotional high.
the next morning, it was all over. And so where their euphoria. Basically, the
climax of their lives was over and they were still just teenagers. They were
literally depressed. Their lives where now meaningless and pointless.
and they finally turned their god damned sterio off.

for the Empire community, today is the official Ernie Banks Day.
As such, I suggest we have two updates today.
And does anybody besides Gramps know what I am talking about?

> Announcement from Dystopian Paradise, (#8) dated Thu Jan 9 14:24:28 2014
Today in the lecture series we will discuss the dystopian society known as
Detroit, Michigan. Bankrupt, corrupt, crime infested, and a population that
once stood at 1.8 million and now is 700K, this city is the perfect setting for
"how to really F up a place".
first we need to understand the 700K people currently livng there are on the
contribution side of the expense ledger. These are the people that can't leave.
Next, we laugh at the pensioners that didn't blink an eye when their leaders
borrowed and borrowed for the "fun today, fund tomorrow" attitude.
Finally we observe huge tracks of land in the city that are abandoned, about
half of the street lights are no functioning, and emergency call times for police
approaching 2 hours.
We could say "we know how this ends". Unfortunately, in true dystopian tradition
there is no end to this story. there is an infinite amount of 'wrose" still
to come. So who is up for buying Detroit municpal bonds? You might get 16
cents back on every dollar you drop.

> Announcement from Dystopian Paradise, (#8) dated Thu Jan 9 14:26:58 2014
major typo alert.
was: 700K people currently livng there are on the contribution side
should be: 700K people currently livng there are NOT on the contribution side

So aonther of my great ideas.
We have 4 active/playing countries in the game.
We have 4 unbroken sanctuary islands.
Why not have the diety give each of us one of the islands. Make it a random
draw. But at least we use those "black holes" on the map.

Let it be known that the supposed "BigFish" in this game is an imposter, I tell you, and thus should not be trusted - there is no telling what other deceptions he might be up to . . . .
- the real BigFish

I think that Distopian Paridise is the winner of Phase one of the game
The land grab, Oklahoma land rush, what ever you want to call it
200 sectors 72% efficiency

Well done Disstopian Paridise

Now we enter Pase two

> Announcement from Dystopian Paradise, (#8) dated Sat Jan 18 23:42:54 2014
The Land Grab phase of the game always makes me think of the Hedley Larmar line
from Blzing Saddles:
"Land Snatch. Land Snatch. See Snatch."
Great movie, even if I can't spell it right.

dear god,
I sent you a letter, via POGO
did you hear me?
should I pray?

> Announcement from WingNut, (#6) dated Mon Jan 20 23:50:08 2014
I have made a HUGE fauz pas against Dystopian Paridisio.
Early today I teled and said I was working and would NOT do
anything until I telexed.
Well work got over and a collegues asked what I was upto
and it involve a series of at sea tends etc... he thought the
game was complicated so I said watch. and proceeded to attack and
sack an island of Dystopia.

FUN
but moral repugnant as I did NOT tele. Now I could have and then unloaded.
but a REAL player would have teled and then waited for CONFIRMATION
then unloaded.
a.) I suck
b.) I am sorry for having broken my word.
c.) Dys has a right to be pissed...
d.) supper anyone?

> Announcement from WingNut, (#6) dated Tue Jan 21 18:25:47 2014
Doorbells have been installed on Dystopia's mainland. Press a button and a thunderous roar sounds in some sector
off in the distance. Seems that the roar is accompannied by massive destruction. I will
have to refine the doorbell concept.

Total doorbell reach is a little over 30 sectors of Dystopia's mainland.
advisor expect massive loss of life and property as we investiage why the
doorbells are doing such damage. Testing musht procede.

> Announcement from WingNut, (#6) dated Tue Jan 21 20:45:19 2014
Interesting, and not minor fact.
You can be friens with someone where you have agreed to own an old piece of their
land, IE slave factories. BUT when you shoot the civs rather than convert them.
that action triggers Hostility automatically in relationships.
surprise surprise surprises in the code.

> Announcement from WingNut, (#6) dated Wed Jan 22 05:09:39 2014
turns out that 37 of Dystopia's Sectors got the pleasure of being hooked up
to the new test doorbell's from WingNut (Handyman to the torus.) Still haven't figure out
why it is every dang time you push a sectors bell a rather large eruption of
material and destruction occurs. Must test further. Good news is that
* We have sacked Dystopia Paradise's Captial * caused quite a party. And the volumne
of gold bars can't be understated.

Ding.

> Announcement from WingNut, (#6) dated Thu Jan 23 02:01:34 2014
and so phase II is over.
Dystopian Paridiso is gone, well effectively.
BigFish has risen from the deeps to be revived with a breath of life.
Gramps seems grumpy but we now move to phase III.

May the odds improve for those that remain.

> Announcement from WingNut, (#6) dated Thu Jan 23 19:40:28 2014
An so it is done. The dystopian parisidian parisite has been removed from
BigFish's homeland and from his own homeland for the obnoxious idea that invading
someone was a good idea.
Now we just must scarf the ragtag few outliers of his former pestilance from the world.

> Announcement from WingNut, (#6) dated Thu Jan 23 19:42:46 2014
Dys have 4.1K mil. I just found 2.5K in one harbor.
whee...

> Announcement from WingNut, (#6) dated Thu Jan 23 23:26:39 2014

to wipe Dys away.
But after who knows, those che revolutionaries can be tough.\

> Announcement from WingNut, (#6) dated Fri Jan 24 21:18:07 2014
There IS an ending.
Dystopian Paridise is no longer. Turns out
one of my sectors had rebelled.
He is gone.
So mourneth the dead.
A short word: pity the sap.
So endth the mourning.

> Announcement from visitor, (#9) dated Sat Jan 25 05:30:16 2014
So the question remains - who is BigFish really? Because he isn't BigFish.
- BigFish

> Announcement from WingNut, (#6) dated Sat Jan 25 19:33:36 2014
It really doesn't mattter since our 'BigFish' in this game choose his name to play
not really his fault that there had been a BigFish before him.
Perhaps WolfpackEmpire should contain a list of country names that have been
and not a blitz.

But next question. Guys? Do we want to ask Mark to start a new game quick in beginning of
Feb since this one was scheduled to run for two months right?

Cuz I can launch an attack on you guys to finish it
or wait for nukes
or declare
or just start a NEW GAME!.

> Announcement from WingNut, (#6) dated Mon Jan 27 04:51:56 2014
Ok so I see the schedule is for this game to run through Feb.
I consider it over.

So I am asking for a win declaration so we can start Hvy Feb-Mar with
not quite the shotgun start and get it going.
anyone want to dispute? Cuz That will bring the wrath of
Doorbell at your door!

> Announcement from POGO, (#0) dated Mon Jan 27 11:59:00 2014

uncontested victory declaration, I can start the next one early, and
