A player reported somewhat sub-optimal initial setup of his island,
and inquired whether it's the same for everyone.
The common tool to create random worlds is called fairland. It
creates a number of start islands. Each of them consists of the exact
same sectors. However, the sectors are arranged in different ways.
Every sector has an "elevation". We start with the highest sector,
then add sectors one by one in decreasing elevation order. Resources
depend on elevation. That way, the spread of resources in start
islands follows a common pattern.
My world setup also follows sector elevation, because that's the
easiest way to put resource-extracting sectors on the appropriate
resource, and other sectors away from them. Leaves the spatial
placement of sectors to chance. Most noticable for harbors and radar
stations.

We would need a gold dredge ship then. Of course you have to
have uws as part of the crew because the poor slob running
the inlet tube underwater is always killed so
the rest of the crew can split his share.
And another complaint from another player - Would it kill you
to put the islands close enough so we could bridge
to them? Hmmm?

Where do I get a server version of empire...I obviously need to figure out land units

Back in the day when land units didnt exist the game took much long but also was much harder.

Thanks Wirikidor - yeah I played a bit before units. And normally, in the non-heavy setup, land units can go even further - they are slower here and can't be carried by as wide variety of ships. I did find the blitzes are a key way to get more up-to-speed. And of course the info pages . . . .

As a suggestion for future games -
put the entire island in sanctuary so proximity to an unbroken sanctuary
is not a game changing factor.

Wirikidor asked for server code.
This server runs bog standard code, which you can download via

http://www.wolfpackempire.com/server.html>. The only game-specific
addition is the two info pages Common-Fever and Hvy-Fever. If you
need pre-compiled server binaries, let me know, and I'll see what can
be done.
Common Fevers use standard rules, and there's nothing particularly
interesting in their configuration and setup.
Hvy Fevers use simplified Hvy Metal rules with a shotgun start. We
haven't gotten around to publishing the config files implementing the
rules in their proper place, so you still have to get them from the
last Hvy Plastic game:

Income was $200K per turn before taking Paranoid's banks/capital.
Tech: 187.68
Main bank has 1965 bars.
MAK 38 had only 1100 bars when I took his over.
MAK and mike hadn't bothered putting civs on the mountain,
so were only making like 3-4 nuggets a turn.
