What's all the hype about killing in a single explosion? I
doubt that even if I get the gal to GMship for both skills
(not that it's possible for tinkering and darned expensive
for alchemy), the damage will improve all that much. The way
I see it, deadly poison trapped chest is probably a way to go.
But that is even more expensive.
BTW, what's up with the key? I put the chest key in a key ring,
and the trapped cannot be disarmed (yeah, the trap blew up
in my face). This is stupid, so I have to carry all my other
key in a ring and this extra chest key out of it? Feh... this
trapping is disappointing.

I dont know about how effective this is, all I can say is that I was killed
outright from opening a chest, and subsequently got looted by the
"hidden" tinker.
OK I only had STR 38 and AR 14, but I lost around 1K worth of stuff, so
I would say in that instance it was effective.
I later questioned the tinker who looted me and he laughed and said, that
he had nothing to loose as he had made the character only 2 hours prior !

You are doing something wrong if that's your result. First, the
majority of people that have survived my traped chests are wearing
minimal armor (wierd). The majority of people who are killed by them
are in full plate. I have found from considerable experience (I've had
a Tinker/Alchemist Trapper since they've existed) is that if by chance
you have a lesser explosion in your bag mingled among the greaters, the
algorithm for some reason will find and use the lesser. Onlyl put
greater explosions in your bag. My traps kill most people, about 1 in
20 or so survive. If you look on the murderer board on Atlantic, my
guild mate John MacIntire has over 300 kills all from traping chests.
Not a shabby statistic.

Okay, here's the key to understanding the key.
While it is on a ring, the key will affect the lock, but NOT the trap.
While by itself, the key will affect both lock and trap.
If the key affects the trap, then locking arms it, and unlocking disarms it.
SO, the following sequences work, I have tried them:
Starting with a trapped, unlocked box. (trap starts out armed) Lock the box
(trap is still armed). In this state, the bomb will only go off if the box
is accessed by a means other than a single key. Breaking, lockpicking, and
unlocking with keyrings will not disarm, and the trap will go off when the
box is opened. (A REALLY good lockpick has a chance of disarming the
trap...)
Starting with a locked, armed box... If you unlock the box with the lone
key, it will disarm the trap, and unlock the box. The box may now be used
safely. A message informs you the trap is disarmed. Unlock the box with a
keyring, and the box is unlocked, but the TRAP IS STILL ARMED! Opening at
this point (and I found this out the hard way), will set off the trap.
Clear as mud?

Alchemy doesn't really play a role in trapping the boxes, other than
making the potions for the trap. The Tinker skill is the one that gives
you a -50% / +50% bonus to the trap damage.
With my Tinker (55 skill), I'm able to make LESSER explosion traps that
do about 75 pts of damage to an unarmored individual, and 50 pts of damage
with 30 AR (perhaps 29 AR).
What type of explosion potions are you using? Try experimenting with
poison, too. A Greater Poison or Deadly Poison will kill a person in a few
seconds, assuming they don't have access to a cure potion or spell. >:)

Oddly enough, unlock a chest with a key on a keyring will NOT disable
the trap. The only way to disable a trap & unlock the chest is to use the
key outside of a keyring.
This is good, because you can turn the trap on and off at your leisure,
as well as having it explode in the thief's/snooper's face (a chest will
not go off if they try to open it while it's unlocked (or locked) by
regular means, but if the key was on a keyring ... BOOM!).
Hope I made sense. :)

I made a fresh bash of Greater Explosion then immediately applied
the tinkering tool to trap the chest. First test, I lost 80HP,
but I survive (my tinker has 95HP). Second test, same routine,
made one G Explosion then trapped the chest. Only 50HP lost this
time. Maybe I'll try with normal explosion and maybe even
lesser explosion. Perhaps, this is one of the things that
OSI screwed up where more is less.

That's the real pain. I realize that.

Sure you do, what doesn't is the mechanic of the stupid trapped
chest.

I have killed hundreds of players with traped chests in various ways.
It is absolutely the cause of more UO related laughter than anything
else in the game. If you're willing to run the risk of being a
murderer, nothing is more funny than traping a chest, having someone
open it and die, immediatly retraping it and watching the next person
think it's safe ROFL. I had 7 bodies around the same chest at one
time. I laughed so hard I had a headache. There was obviously more
loot than I could carry, so I just kept dumping it in the chest. This
was before you became a murderer for chest traping though.
UT
This is the way I first died to a pk...and believe it or not, after my
initial chagrin at being an idiot subsided (took about 5 seconds), I
laughed and thanked the guy who did it for teaching me a valuable
lesson. Now the only way I'll open a random chest/box is if I can carry
it to the healer first, and open it there. If it's too heavy...too bad,
I don't need it that much. :)
