I don't think people appreciate how strong Kasparov really is. I
talked to Dzindzashvili recently about it and knows both Ks
personally as well as having been a trainer for Garry as he was
coming up. He says that (1) Kasparov knows ALL openings and to a
greater detail than anyone (2) he has a universal style (thanks
to Karpov). He thinks Garry is far stronger than anyone today. It
sounded like Garry was #1 and there was NO #2!

Henley, a Karpov second, told me before the Timman match that he
thought Karpov only had a 25-30% chance this time against Garry.
He was concerned (1) Karpov has been playing much poorer of late
(2) has had a tendency to catch colds (3) has been taking chess as
seriously as he had in the past. Anatoly has MANY side interests
(collecting stamps, political, ecology, money, etc.).

Karpov has an exposure, in my opinion, in that he consistently plays
the same opening variations. He knows them well, but...
