The World Computer Chess Championship was held in Madrid last week.
The winner was the program Chess Machine Schroeder, programmed by
Ed Schroeder, scoring 4 wins and a draw in 5 games. Schroeder,
perhaps best known as the author of the Rebel program, narrowly
lost the 1986 World Championship when his program overheated in
the last round. This time luck was on his side. He was lost in
3 of his games, including a comeback win in the 4th round against
Richard Lang and Ossi Weiner's Chess Genius (two pawns down in a
rook and minor piece endgame!).

Second place was shared between Zugzwang (University of Paderborn)
and Cumulus (J.C Weil) each with 4 points. Zugzwang should probably
have won the tournament, drawing its last 2 games in easily winning
positions.

The tournament was notable for the absence of a number of well-known
programs such as Deep Thought, Cray Blitz and Bebe.
