I read in the paper yesterday that the World Checker Champion, the
phenomenal Tinsley (sp?) is challenging (or being challenged by) the
Checker Program Chinook. Any word of the first game's result? Tinsley waxed
it the last time up but the programers have up graded their program and
Tinsley isn't getting any younger...

Tinsley "waxing" the computer does not seem to be an accurate
reflection of the match result. The final score was 4 wins for
Tinsley, 2 wins for Chinook and 33 draws. The score does
not reflect how close the match really was. Chinook was leading
2-1 when we forfeited game 18. Tinsley led 3:2 going
into the last game, when we pulled out all the stoips in an
attempt to win and (of course) it backfired.

The Boston Globe had a color front-page picture/article about the
match(!). And just as I was reading the above post, the local TV news
program mentioned the match as well. According to the newspaper, the
first two games were drawn.

Well perhaps I waxed a little poetic there... I seem to recall that Tinsely
had a "reason" for his losses too, fatigue or a cold or something, so it all
evens out. You say "we." What's your role in this? Perhaps you could talk
a little about the event, I think we'd all be interested in a behind the
scenes account of the match... I've forgotten for example, why 18 was
forfeited. What were the victories and losses like... did they hinge on a
single blunder or what?

"We" consisted of Jonathan Schaeffer (the principal author of Chinook),
Robert Lake, Paul Lu, and Norman Treloar. The four of us were in London
two years ago for the first World Championship match. Since then, Martin
Bryant has replaced Norman Treloar for this match and the four of us
are currently in Boston.

As for a recount of the match, check the technical report that are available
for anonymous ftp under menaik.cs.ualberta.ca. If you have a WWW connection,
I have links to some interesting checkers literature under my home page
