Hallo,

I'm looking for a chess database containing different openings,
analysis and variants running on a Macintosh 512e.

Thanks,

Zoltan.

Some time ago I made a similar query. The only thing that exists now
is Bookup. I ordered it, but I am quite disappointed with it.
Position is the only search key, it could be more Mac'ish (for
example, you can't copy the diagram to be pasted in another dodument,
etc.). It is also pretty slow.

I wrote to New In Chess, and they answered that NIC-base will be
available for the Macintosh! Only they didn't mention, when it will
be available. NIC-base is really something I was looking for when I
bought Bookup. I can't wait.

I have also heard that ChessBase will be available for the Macintosh.
I have not written to them, so you might want to do that yourself to
confirm that.

However, I am not sure whether these Macintosh products will run on a
Mac 512. One will see.

At present NIC-base is available for Atari and MS-DOS only (Hercules/
CGA/EGA). A version for Macintosh and Amiga is forseen. It is supposed
to come out in 1990, but they could not tell me when exactly.

ChessBase is working on this right now. They did not give an estimate
of how long it would take. Previous releases of ChessBase took typically
a year and a half to be reasonable bugfree. (MS-Dos ChessBase1, CB2 on
both Dos and Atari). The copy protection is usually the bottleneck.
I expect the program to be available in the end of 1990.
