Is CM5000 for the PC out yet? IS it going to have a stronger
chess engine than CM4000 Turbo (CD-ROM) did?

Well, it is good to see that leaks are limited! CM5K is under
construction, as are new versions of Kasparov's Gambit and
of course the new program from Interplay. So you won't
find much information until close to shipping date,
because no one wants their nifty new features to fall
into the hands of the competition, and the people involved
in creating these products (including me) are under
non-disclosure agreements and can't say anything.

If you want to see new functionality in these programs
just post on the net. Mindscape, makers of Chessmaster 5000,
value net input and each suggestion is passed on to the
relevant people.

Sometime this fall you will get to see the three mass-market
heavyweights and can choose the one you like best (which,
of course, will be Chessmaster :->) but until then I am afraid
that you'll just have to be patient.

The competition is sure to produce excellent, innovative
products as the big boys battle for your dollar, ruble, mark,
shilling or whatever. Tolerance for design compromises will be
lower, and the net community is certainly a target for the
marketing of the products.

Design ideas for Chessmaster 5000 can be sent directly
to the man in charge of building it:
Carlos Justiniano (cjust...@mindscape.com)
If you really want to lobby for some idea, send it
to me too.
But do keep in mind that it is almost April, and
it is unlikely that any of the major products is
going to make a big, radical change at this point.
Software development of chess products is an 18-24 month
cycle.

G'day. A pal o' mine recently obtained Kasparov's Gambit V.1
and he (and I) would be most interested if anybody knows at what
estimated strength this program plays at and if that person would
post or e-mail this information...

I know little about his hardware though I'm pretty sure he has
a 486...

My guess would be no stronger than 1800/1900 USCF(?) but I could
find no reference to this software in the places I've searched.

All assistance much appreciated.

Cheers,

Ian.

Actually, they are trying to improve on everything and still get it out on
time! I think you can count on finding out about it here in r.g.c. as
quickly as anyone else does, because various members of the CM5K team
peruse this newsgroup regularly, and as soon as allowed, will post relevant
information.

So the best way to see that the feature you want is in it, is simply to
post your wish list here, or send it to cjust...@mindscape.com.
