** Announcing the release of XBoard and WinBoard, version 3.6.0 **

A new release of both XBoard and WinBoard is now available. WinBoard
3.6.0 is a major improvement over the previous release (3.4.2).
XBoard 3.6.0 is not very different from the previous release (3.5.0),
but does have a few improvements.

You can get both programs from my Chess page on the World Wide Web or
from the Internet Chess Library FTP site. In addition, XBoard should
soon be available from GNU FTP sites.

XBoard is a graphical chessboard for the X Window System that can
serve as a user interface for GNU Chess, Crafty, and other chess
engines, for the Internet Chess Servers, and for electronic mail
correspondence chess. XBoard can also be used by itself. It can read
and write game files in PGN (portable game notation).

WinBoard is a similar program for Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows NT.
It includes all the major features of XBoard except email
correspondence chess. Warning: WinBoard does not work on Windows 3.1
or 3.11, not even with Win32s.

If you are using Crafty with XBoard or WinBoard, you'll need Crafty
12.0 to work properly with XBoard or WinBoard 3.6.0. These new
versions of Crafty, XBoard, and WinBoard have been reworked to
function well together. You can get Crafty 12.0 (now or soon) from
its author, Bob Hyatt, at ftp://ftp.cis.uab.edu/hyatt/.

=== Change highlights ===

* WinBoard now has an installer. Simply unzip the distribution and
run setup.exe to install. Start menu entries for most common uses are
created.

* WinBoard now has a custom ICS interaction window with scrollback, a
separate line for input, colorization, and a context menu.

* Added ICC timestamp and FICS timeseal to the WinBoard distribution.

* Added a WinBoard startup dialog for people who run WinBoard.exe
without using the Start menu or reading the help file. Instead of
being dumped directly into GNU Chess mode, you now get a menu of
choices.

* Added simple sound support to WinBoard.

* Added SaveSettings to WinBoard, which saves current option settings
to winboard.ini.

* WinBoard error popups are now non-modal and disappear when you make
a new move (as in XBoard).

* WinBoard works around the Windows 95 bug that sometimes caused
crashes at the start of a new game and in the TimeControl dialog.

* XBoard and WinBoard handle FICS suicide chess automatically.

* Updated and completed the documentation of the interface between
XBoard/WinBoard and chess programs. Added several extensions.

* Zippy now resumes adjourned games by feeding the chess program the
move list instead of the position.

* Many smaller bug fixes and improvements.
