The AEGON Computer Chess Tournament has developed into the largest
event of its kind in the world. The quality of the tournament has
improved eachyear since the first tournament in 1986, due not only to
the ability ofthe human contestants, but also to the increasing
reasoning ability of thecomputer programs. In the last five years, the
tournament has been won by international grandmasters: twice by John
van der Wiel (1991 and 1995) and David Bronstein (1992 and1993) and once
by Larry Christiansen (1994). All these players will be competing again
in 1996. They will compete against computer programs reckoned to be best
in their class in the world.Other international grand masters and
masters are: Roberto Cifuentes Parada,Julio Granda Zuniga, Yona
Kosashvili, Hans Ree, Yasser Seirawan, Jonathan Speelman, Rafael
Vaganian, Paul Boersma, Rob Hartoch, Erik Hoeksema, GertLigterink,
Stefan Loumlfler, Peng Zhao Qin and Sofie Polgar. Contestants known for
their abilities in other fields, such as the former checkers world
champion Jannes van der Wal and the writer Tim Krabbe, will also be
pitting their wits against the chess computer. The competing chess
computers include, to name but a few: Rebel, Chess Genius,Hiarcs, Mchess
Pro, The King, Hitech, Frenchess, WChess and Fritz.

The human contenstants at the 11th AEGON Computer Chess Tournament
will play according to FIDE rules. On the computer side, the rule is
that theoperator must never influence the game through his or her
intervention and he or she must follow all the computer's
instructions. The external clock indicates the time available, even if
this differs from the internal time-keeping. If the operator considers
there to be a too largea discrepancy between the internal and external
time-keeping, under certainconditions he can make corrections. Play is
against the Fischer clock. Per game, each player has 1,30 hours for play
and will be allowed to plus 20 seconds per move.
