I am not wriggling. I used the word as a pejorative under the assumption
that it always was. I am genuinely shocked to read that there appears to
be a definition of bigotry that does not imply a negative. I have never
seen it used that way. Now I am confused about the word and how it is
used. I would appreciate if you could answer my hypothetical above, it
might clear things up for me.

This has nothing to do with left or right as far as I'm concerned, it
has to do with values, what values are decent and acceptable and which
should be condemned and opposed by all people of good conscience. And
it's about what does it mean exactly to be a bigot. Don't waste it
trying to score some cheap points.
