Links go to a site that purports to be the GIMP site, but isn't
(http://www.gimp.org/ is the real site).

That alone raises red flags for me.

Links also all include what looks like a referral code, the same
"128HWT" as given in the URL you provided.

Maybe it's nothing, maybe it's just a referral scam, maybe it's
something nasty, I don't know, but I as hell wouldn't install it on my
machine.

If it was me, I would ask the sender to send the .jpgs, stating that
these "don't work" on your computer.

If I was more curious, I might set up a virtual machine with virtualbox
(https://www.virtualbox.org/) and play around in there.

I did. No response as of yet. I tried to download it to one of the
Linux boxes..no luck..so I think its a virus spreader. Odd that it
came from a Craiglist posting though.

Actually that would be the first clue as to it being all the more
suspicious; lots of scammers troll CL looking for people to foist there
scams on, especially in the personals and help wanted categories.

Weird! I use gimp frequently -- but I've never had it installed
as a plugin in my browser -- and would *not* do so. If they don't allow
me to download the photos and view them outside the browser, I'm not
going to play. :-) I don't think that I would trust the plugin, and I'll
bet that it demands to be installed on a system with Windows, not any
flavor of unix/linux/BSD.

While gimp has a private extension (and it is *not* ".gimp", but
some thing else, and it is good to save an image with that if you are
going to do more work on it later, I normally use the GIMP to read in
tiff files, manipulate them, and save them as jpeg files (keeping the
original tiff ones) for sending to others on CD or DVD ROMs.

Enjoy,
DoN.

I belong to a yahoo group that finds free or cheap sailboats ....and
that message was concerning a boat...or it implied a cheap/free boat.
was being offered. Ive only been subscribed to it for about a
week...so it came right out of the blue. Fortunately..I tend to be a
bit paranoid about security..Ive had a number of computer attacks by
actual people over the years..typically leftwingers (all unsucessful)
so I keep my security a bit tighter than most folks do.

I did a search for "gimp photo viewer" and yes., there is a place to
download one but it seems to have nothing to do with gimp the Gnu
Image Manipulation Program, which, by the way, uses a filename
extension of "xcf", not "gmp".
