Yesterday was a busy day at the Post Office, both my new spoiler and neon
underbody light kit arrived. I also received 2 emails telling me my new
wheels and adjustable coil overs are on their way!! My little store room is
starting to fill up with all kinds of bolt-on goodies. I'm so excited and
really looking forward to warmer weather so I can start installing this
stuff on my SL. Being without a garage in Alaska is a pain in the neck, but
come late April mid-May I can start getting things put together. I think the
SL is going to make a great looking cruiser, but it'll never be a 12 sec. VW
bug. I hope to make some extra web space at my site and provide pics and
such of the changes to the SL. Maybe others can learn from my mistakes ;-)

Awesome. I too am getting lots of stuff. Coil-overs, white gauge faces
(Thanks Dennis!!), and stillen brakes, but I live in DC and it's been med
50's lately. I just can't wait for a free weekend.

Anyway, just curious as to what "C'mon Break-Up!" as the subject means?
You're talking about the Ice in AK?

Do share the pics when you have them....

What's the attraction to coil-overs versus springs and struts?

Yep you got it............... Snow, ice and frozen ground. It's a real mess
when things finally start to warm up. First the snow has to melt, currently
there's about 2 feet of it still on the ground at my house. The frost goes
down on average of 6 feet here during the winter and when it thaws mud and
huge puddles are every where. Actually it's a mud boggers dream come true
for about 3 weeks. Once break up is finished then there's plenty of daylight
to work with, I've done work on my bug at 2:00AM with plenty of daylight
still left! That' going to be the bummer with my neon's, there will be quite
a stretch when it won't ever be dark enough to see their glow.

Price, you can get your car lowered a few inches without the expense.
Carrera Struts with matching lowering springs would be the ideal way to go
and the car would handle the curves with the best of them. I'm not going for
a racer, just a cruiser with the club on Thursday nights and few Saturday
shows, so in this case price is more important than performance. When I want
to go fast, I'll drive the VW.

very true. I got my coil-overs for 110, and they are adjustable ride height
from .25 - 4 inch drop. Springs are a set 1.7 - 2.5 drop depending on the
spring, and cost about 150 - 300.

so, lowered a possible 4", and underbody neons, and 3 feet of snow, don't
seem to go together very well. How's that gonna work for ya?!?!?!

Don't have a clue yet, guess I'll find out next winter! Actually, both the
State and the Borough do a really good job of keeping the roads cleared,
even out where I live. But if I ever have to do any ditch diving who knows
how well these neon's will hold up.

One nice thing about the adjustable coils, come next winter I can always
crank them back up to stock height, put the stock wheels back on with
studded snows all the way around. Shouldn't be any much different than the
way it is now.

Hey G.W. - I just moved to Fairbanks with my 99 SL2. When it's colder
than -20 or so, it won't warm up hardly at all. I put cardboard over the
radiator, and it only seems to help a little. Also started making a weird
whining noise. They don't seem to be made for cold, block heater was hard
to find and hard to put in, too. I'm running Mobil 1 5W30. How does
yours do in the winter?
Tim

I've only had the car since November 2001 and my 99 SL has performed great
this winter, no heating problems at all with one possible exception. I'm a
smoker, and when I crack the window open to do my dirty deed it gets cold in
there. As long as the windows are up everything is toasty. I use straight
dino, 10W30 in the winter and 10W40 summer. I check/change fluids every 5K
miles and commute to Anchorage from Knik, 120+ miles every day of the work
week. I also have no block heater and the car starts up immediately, even
at -20F. Admittedly it doesn't get near as cold here as it does in
Fairbanks, at least not for as long as it does there, but I would suggest
replacing your thermostat and checking all of the door/window seals. One
small leak such as a cracked window while smoking can make all of the
difference in the world.

We got the "Fairbanks Special" on ours! Command Auto-start with low-temp
starting, bolt-on block heater, oil pan heater, transmission pan heater, and
electric battery blanket. Started fine at -40, just won't warm up. Maybe a
hotter thermostat is the answer. Our car is drafty, too, so that is maybe
the biggest factor.

I couldn't figure out how to route the extension cord for the interior
heater, not to mention where to mount it. (That's why we got auto-start)
Keep warm--winter's almost over!
Tim

I lived in Anchorage Alaska for 15 years prior to my moving to
Floribama. After the move, I bought my '97 SL2.

In Alaska, I always had the quintessential Subaru 4WD wagons. They
really are the perfect Alaskan semi-urban vehicles.

I get a kick out of GW cause he wants to cruise Knik, Alaska in modified
Saturn. Cruising Knik in a sported Saturn might impress both of the
teenage girls who live there, but for the most part nobody in Knik would
care about a Saturn because it cant carry firewood nor haul much dead
mooseflesh! In Alaska, even in the "city" of Anchorage, practicality is
the name of the game.

Even in Anchorage I used to get a chuckle out of the Californicated
"ricers" who attempted to import their gaudy hobby to an environment
that requires not "show" nor "go", just the ability to blow through
snow.

I'm not raining on your parade GW, bless you for tweaking your Satty!
I'll be doing the same to mine down here in Floribama where its not
ridiculously impractical.

Impractical as it may seem to you there are plenty of us here that love to
"tweak" our cars. I have stated when I first started reading this NG, I just
can't leave any of my cars alone. I guess I'm still an 18 year old kid in a
50 year old body.

I'm one of the founding members of the Valley Cruzers car club (
http://www.valleycruzers.com ) currently with over 200+ members. We cruise
as a club all over the Valley, from King Mountain to Talkeetna. We put on
several shows over the summer with our primary focus on the "Hot August
Summer Night" cruise in Palmer. This show over the last 2 years has had 600+
of some the finest cars you'll ever see compete in 12 different classes for
trophy's. We also team up with the Midnight Sun Hot Rod Association (an
Anchorage club) who put on as many if not more events. "Tweaked" cars with
very serious owners are alive and well in Alaska. Admittedly very few are
driven in winter for obvious reasons, but I'm confident my Saturn will do
just fine in winter with it's mods.

As for practical cars for Alaska I have those, an 1988 F-250 4X4, 1999 Chevy
TrailBlazer, Yamaha Kodiak 4X4 with snowplow and for that really smooth
cruise a 1978 Mercedes 450 SEL. Each one of those has also had some form of
my personal touch added to them. Like I said, I just can't leave them alone.
Oh yeah, the teenage girls already flock to my VW bug, how do you get rid of
them? ;-)

...I swore I was going to do nothing when I bought my 97SL2 in Feb-97. It
was my first new car in 17 years and afterall, it's a Saturn i.e. nice,
safe, moderate family type car .

While I haven't done much to mine, it's still fun to do some and think about
more possibilities - off course the generally supportive format of this
forum makes it all the more fun.

Good thing I'm not made of money, I'd be dangerous!
