Howards End [new to US] (8 pm, Starz)

Previously adapted into a widely acclaimed 1992 movie by the
Merchant-Ivory team, E.M. Forster's novel now comes to the small screen
in a highly anticipated four-part series written by Manchester by the
Sea's Kenneth Lonergan and directed by Hettie Macdonald (Fortitude,
Doctor Who). Hayley Atwell and Philippa Coulthard head the cast as
sisters in early 20th century England, and they're joined by Matthew

The next series from Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge is very
different from her previous, critically acclaimed comedy. For one thing,
it's not a comedy, for the most part; it's a tense, twisted,

Some of us are teaching 5 classes this semester. Right now, I'm not even streaming a 1-hour show off Netflix, and I probably won't start for another week or two.

have time, and I'm just letting those pile up so that we can watch a
season straight through. These are generally 8-10 episode cable shows.
OTOH, most of the shows I record for myself I watch right away.

Yeah, see, I refuse to do that! ;p

On my end, I'd rather wait for marginal shows like "Killing Eve" or
"Mary Kills People" to show up on a streamer where I can then binge
them at my leisure on a lazy Saturday afternoon. I'd rather reserve the
DVR for stuff I am certain to watch within a week...

A friend of mine's wife controlled their VCR, and would never preset it,
'cause she wanted to make sure they were showing the right thing, to
which ends she also wouldn't hit 'record' until, while watching it live,
she confirmed to her satisfaction that it was the show she wanted to
record. So none of their recordings *ever* had the beginning of
anything.

For a while, Time Warner seemed to have tech that would "back-fill" (to the beginning!) recordings that were started late.

Unfortunately, they seemed to have dropped that over the last couple of years... :/

We have that tech but it only goes back as far as to when the DVR was
tuned to the current channel and powered on. So if you're, say,
watching a recording, and it ends, and the live show comes on in
progress, and you hit record, it will back-fill up to an hours worth.
But the buffer empties any time you change the channel or cycle the
power.

I didn't see Collateral. I did watch Last Tango and though her character
is not very bright, she's a good actress. I also saw the one where she
plays the dead partner.
