Question about the ratings of STTNG

everywhere it is quaoted as being 10 or so but what does this mean in regards
to STTNG .....fo a normal network show this is for the one showing of each
episode a week....for most syndicated new (first run) shows this would again
before the one showing...but STTNG is on at least twice (for each "new" episode
each week so is this the combined rating for the two showings (if so it would
be inflated by the people watching it both times....also most markets also are
showing at least one and sometimes up to 5 old episodes a week are these also
combined into the rating totals..........I have noted that it is about 2 to 3
times as high as any other first run syndicated show..........also note that a
10 would not keep most network shows on true they do not get the 20;s they use
to but they do get overall 13;s and 14's as well as some 15's and low 16......

TOS had a 17 according to TV GUIDE when it was canceled in 1969..............

Times have changed

So have the number of viewers. In 1969 the TV audience for Networks (all
that was available at the time) was 98-100%. These days the total Network
viewing audience is only about 67%. Though TNG isn't on Network, this does
show that viewing is now quite dispersed because of cable. This makes TNG's
comparative rating very high for a show in syndication, especially because
it has to compete with so many other shows and channels made available be
cable, FOX, and PBS.

And to beat a dead horse COMPLETELY into the ground, the networks
have gotten much more sophisticated
about segmenting that audience. Demographics are much more important these
days in deciding if a show hangs around or not.....

Back in the 60s, total numbers was the main determining factor.
That's why TOS was dropped. But beginning in the 70s and 80s, both the
network and sponsors looked a lot more closely at demographics; if a show
had good ratings in an audience segment that's hard to get at (say, males
18-34, with a professional career), then that can make a big difference in
a show's retention. In fact, demographics were a major reason ST. ELSEWHERE
and HILL STREET BLUES were retained; they NEVER had good ratings overall, but
their demographics and good critical reception made them valuable to the
network and sponosrs. It's been said more than once that if demogrpahics
had played a larger role back then, TOS would not have been cancelled after
either the second or third season.

And, of course, the relevance of all this to TNG is that the demogra-
phics are STILL very good for the new show. It has some of the best ratings
for ALL syndicated shows in the 18-49 range and is a top competitor with
network shows in the 18-34 male range. Those kind of numbers carry big clout
with advertisers.....
