Females in the business??

Why are there so few female scriptwriters and directors? I'm
a scripwriter myself - and male. I think that the business needs
more females in creative positions. So, if any of you are female
AND into scriptwriting - let me know.

Last year I worked on a low-budget feature written and directed by a
woman. The script was good, and her directing style produced what looked
to me like good results (she is in post production now). The cast
and crew responded well to her, although there were times she would ask
for a change in the set-up, and would get resistance, I think because she
made requests in a nice quiet manner. A _man_ making the same request in
a more forcefull manner would have almost certainly gotten a faster
response, with less "discussion".
Men tend to dominate nearly every field of endevor: and that may not be
right, but it is the way it is. BTW, here in the U.S. there is a cable
channel that features made-for-TV movies written and directed by women.

Speaking as a female screenwriter/director/stage manager, etc...
I've had very few difficulties as a woman when working with professional
crew members. In my experience, whatever they think about women
personally, they're so happy to be working with someone who's competent
and treats them with respect, they very rarely give me any trouble. On
the other hand, when working with amateurs or less experienced people, I
often run into a double bind: if I use the polite, soft-spoken,
stereotypically female approach, they think I'm a wimp and argue. If I
use the forceful, stereotypically male approach, they think I'm a bitch
and argue. So if any of those less experienced people are out there and
are reading this... Give us women a break, will you? If we can't afford
to hire the easier-to-work-with professionals, we've got enough problems
already without sexism having to rear its ugly head.

I agree with you except that I've seen those inexperienced chowderheads
pull the same crap with male veterans. If they keep it up they'll stay
inexperienced. THAT kind of revenge is the best!

Well, I'm female. I'm still a student, but my heart goes out to
scriptwriting and directing.
By the way, of my year 11 out of 25 students are female.
Not all of them want to be scriptwriter/director, but a few of them do.

I'm female, and not only into scriptwriting, but trying to get into
directing as well. I've learned the hard way that you can die of
encouragement in Hollywood, as several of my scripts have climbed
up the ladder only to be rejected by the big wigs in the end. I've
been writing all my life, and recently left a journalism position to
pursue screenwriting/directing more seriously. I have three
scripts which I'm seriously considering producing and directing
myself.
So there you have it.

Hi from the University of Kent UK where I am one
of two gals in the 1st year of a single honours
degree in Film Studies (theory, crit, writing,
some prod. etc.) There are loads of girls doing
the course as a joint honours with English etc.
but only Tracy and I are total film devotees....
When I was at Art Colege last year doing a BTEC in
Film & Video Prod I was one of only 2 girls out of
25.....Where are all the female tech freaks???? I
don't wanna be all alone......

I'm a writer, director, actress for a bunch of years (I was going to
write how many, but I decided not to) I was also a journalist and a
copywriter in advertising and decided for this crazy life at 23.
Have you read the papers lately? Lot's of articles about women deciding
what movies are to be made, which ones to see, "women movies" with ever
increasing box office returns.... These last years the percentage of
women in the crews in all kinds of different positions is increasing
steadely, don't worry, we are here to stay...
