Yogi, Boo-Boo ready for their close-ups

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Warner Bros. is taking a trip to
Jellystone Park.

The studio is developing a feature version of "Yogi Bear," the classic
Hanna-Barbera cartoon. "Surf's Up" co-helmer/co-writer Ash Brannon will
direct the film.

Joshua Sternin and Jeffrey Ventimilia, who executive produced "That '70s
Show" and are writing the feature "Tooth Fairy" for Fox, are penning the
screenplay.

The project, culled from Warners' vast library, is planned as a live-
action/animated hybrid along the lines of Fox's 2007 hit "Alvin & the
Chipmunks." Much of the movie will be live action, but Yogi Bear and
sidekick Boo Boo will be done in CG animation.

Yogi Bear first appeared as a supporting character in 1958 in another
classic cartoon, "The Huckleberry Hound Show." In 1961, he got his own
show, which has aired in reruns frequently over the past half-century.

Yogi's exploits take place in Jellystone Park, where he and Boo Boo get
into good-natured mischief and must elude their nemesis, Ranger Smith.

Brannon has worked on such Pixar hits as "Toy Story 2" and "A Bug's
Life."

And, like most post-Cartoon Network Warner-franchise movies
(ahemScooby), they won't know whether to play it for nostalgia or for
retro-snotty, try for both and get neither.

In the *real* Yogi's defense, however:

Unfortunately, that one suffered from the same problem as Warner's
post-Cartoon Network franchise movies (eg. Scooby-Doo)--
Ie., that Classic Media's desire to promote a marketing franchise
necessitated their being embarassingly crawling about the old-fan
demographic (as witnessed by *every other scene* of characters gushing
"I used to LOVE your old show!--I'm so in touch with my inner child!")...
While at the same time trying to appear "hip" by lambasting the
characters with cheap Gen-X default of "Cartoon critters meet real-world
cynicism" gags.

And given the character-assassination that Yogi *and* Boo-Boo had to
take from Warner/CN back when they were "forced" to show vintage
Hanna-Barbera, Warner still might feel the need to deploy old-style
safety nets on both fronts.

It'll probably be a flop, like The Flintstones and the Rocky and
Bullwinkle movies. :(

For Fractured Fairy Tales, each was done-in-one.

For Rocky & Bullwinkle, yes there definitely were multi episode
arcs.

The Flintstones live-action was popular enough to get a sequel.

Yogi actually had a theatrical movie back in the day -- I never
saw it, but I had a cereal-boxtop-premium record of some of
the songs and high points: "You're a bear!" "I'll nevermore
roam from my Jellystone home."

Week to week. Here's (the always reliable) Wikipedia:

Each episode comprises two "Rocky & Bullwinkle" cliffhanger
shorts that stylistically emulated early radio and film
serials. The plots of these shorts would combine into much
larger story arcs that would span numerous episodes. For
example, the first and also the longest story arc of the
series was called Jet Fuel Formula and consisted of 40
shorts (20 episodes). Each story arc would place the mighty
moose and plucky squirrel in a different adventure, ranging
from seeking the missing ingredient for a rocket fuel
formula, to tracking the monstrous whale Maybe Dick, to a
desperate attempt to prevent mechanical, metal-munching,
moon mice from devouring the nation's television antennas.
Rocky and Bullwinkle confront a number of obstacles and
enemies in the course of their adventures, most frequently
the two Pottsylvanian nogoodniks, Boris Badenov and Natasha
Fatale.

At the end of most episodes, the narrator, William Conrad,
would announce two humorous titles for the next episode
that typically were puns of each other. For example, during
an adventure taking place in a mountain range, the narrator
would state, "Be with us next time for 'Avalanche Is Better
Than None,' or 'Snow's Your Old Man.'" The narrator also
frequently had conversations with the characters, thus
breaking the fourth wall in the process.
