SQUIDDIES: FINAL PSEUDO-NOMINEE LIST

This is the final pseudo-nominee list for the 2000 Squiddy Awards. This list
incorporates a number of changes based on information supplied by members of
the rec.arts.comics.* community. Please note that some eligibility rulings
have changed based on new information.

The Pseudo-Nominee List compiles all creators, books, merchandise, etc. that
have received at least one vote (so far) in the Squiddy awards balloting. Even
though this is the last pseudo-nominee list that will be posted during this
year's voting, you are still free--as always--to vote for
comics/stories/creators/etc. that are not listed below.

The purpose of these pseudo-nominee lists are three-fold:
1) to provide an informal list of "nominations" for voters
who would like their memory jogged,
2) to point out votes we've determined to be ineligible, and
3) to ask for your help in determining whether other votes
are eligible or not.

Several items in the list below have been listed as "questionable." If you can
confirm any of these items as either eligible or ineligible, please post a
reply to this post in rec.arts.comics.misc, or email us. Based on your inputs
to the first and second pseudo-nominee lists, a number of items listed below
have had their status changed.

VOTING: Ballots must be mailed by the end of the day on January 31st to be
counted. THIS IS NOT THE BALLOT! The ballot has been posted separately, and
can be found on rec.arts.comics.info and rec.arts.comics.misc. If you can not
find a copy on either of those newsgroups, please email me at
<carl.he...@airmail.net> and I will be happy to send you one.

CHANGING YOUR VOTE: If you must change your vote--because you've accidentally
voted for something ineligible, or just HAVE to change your vote--please don't
submit a second ballot. To change your vote, email <vo...@rzero.com>. Clearly
indicate the category for which you are changing your vote, what your original
vote was, and what your new vote is. Please, make sure that you are emailing
your vote change from the same address you voted from.

TECHNICAL NOTE: Due to ongoing nameserver problems at GraniteCanyon.com, the
normal Squiddy voting address <vo...@squiddies.org> and contact address
<ques...@squiddies.org> are both currently down. Until these problems have
been resolved, please use <vo...@rzero.com> as the voting address and
<carl.he...@airmail.net> as an address for any Squiddy-related
questions--or post your questions to rec.arts.comics.misc with a "SQUIDDIES:"
keyword.

Voting ends January 31st--and the totals in a number of categories are still
VERY close. So don't forget to vote!

published on the web.

YAY! That must mean that it's come down to time to start making some
predictions!

>
> BEST WRITER

I see this as coming down to the following five top vote getters.

> Brian Michael Bendis
> Kurt Busiek
> Warren Ellis
> Mark Millar
> Alan Moore

I voted for Busiek, but I think Bendis is sporting a lot of good will
from the recent Ultimate book. Of course, savvy publishers always time
the release of their new books to take advantage of Squiddy voting
season.

>
> BEST PENCILLER

Again, my prediction of the top 5 vote getters. A have less confidence
on this one as I do not follow a lot of the hot titty books.

> Alan Davis
> Gene Ha
> Phil Jimenez
> George Perez
> Frank Quitely

I think Quitly will capitalize on his recent Authority success and take
the prize. A l'il trophy for his new office in the Bullpen. I voted
for Davis.

> BEST INKER
> Mark Farmer
> Paul Neary
> Tom Palmer

> Al Vey
> Wade Von Grawbadger

I voted for Farmer, but I think Palmer will take it for making Byrne
for palatable than he has been in years. Witness the recent X-Men
Hidden Years issue Byrne inked himself.

>
> BEST PAINTER
>

I really have to confess that I did not know most of the names
garnering voted in this catagory. I think Harris (whom I voted for)
will take it in a backlash agaisnt Ross having won so many years in a
row, even if he deserves it more.

> BEST LETTERER
> Comicraft
> John Costanza
> Todd Klein
> William Oakley
> Richard Starkings

I voted for Klien. Seems to me that Comicraft and Richard Starkings is
the same thing... either one is likly to take it.

>
> BEST COLORIST
> Laura Allred
> Laura Depuy

> Liquid! Graphics
> Tom McCraw
> Steve Oliff

I voted for Depuy, but I think the machines win and Liquid! takes the
award.

> Busiek/Perez/Vey/Smith (Avengers)

> Priest/Velluto/Almond (Black Panther)
> Ellis/Cassaday/Depuy (Planetary)
> Moore/Ha/Cannon/Sinclair/Klein (Top Ten)

I think Millar & Quitely will take the award. I voted for the
Shockrockets team whom I actually do not think will even make the top 5.
>
> BEST COVER ARTIST
> Brian Bolland
> Alan Davis
> Adam Hughes
> Phil Jimenez
> Alex Ross

I voted for Davis, but I think Bolland will keep his streak alive.

>
> BEST EDITOR
> Axel Alonso
> Tom Brevoort
> Heidi MacDonald
> Joe Quesada
> Diana Schutz

Brevoort seems to be the fan fave, but I think that Alonso (whom I
voted for)will win. Editors are not stars these days even, but Axel
has buzz after being stolen from DC.

>
> BEST POLITICAL CARTOONIST
> Jim Borgman
> Mike Luckovitch (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

I voted for Borgman, but I think it will come down to Trudeau (although
it could be argued that he did not really produce any work in 2000, his
assistants did it all) and a posthumous award for MacNelly.

> BEST SHORT STORY

I think "Grooveweb" will sneak in after the multiple Planetary &
Promethia votes cancel themsevles out. I voted for Ted Knights Eulogy
in Starman.

Most likely the winner will be the Superman/GL book. I voted for
Esiner's modern fairy tale Last Knight.
>
> BEST ORIGNAL GRAPHIC NOVEL

> JLA: League of One

The Eisner books will likely cancel themselves out thereby handing
Judd's book the Squiddy. I voted for Last Day in Viet Nam.

> Black Panther #26-29 "Sturm Und Drung"

I voted for Age of Bronze and hold out hopes for a longshot win.
Still, I am fairly confident that the Authority will win.

Again, I voted for Age of Bronze. I expect Planetary to take this one.

I voted for Harley Quinn. I'm pretty sure Ultimate Spider-Man will
take it in a walk.

I voted for Shockrockets which I expect to win.

I almost voted for the most recent Spirit Archives until I noticed it
was listed as inelligable. I could've sworn I bought it last month...
Anyway, I switched my vote to vol.1. I just cannot believe that I am
the only one who voted for the Spirit Archives. Oh well, I'm guessing
vol.2 of the Plas Archives will win.

> BEST ANTHOLOGY

See, now I thought the ABC Special came out this month. Oh well, shows
what I know. I voted for Tomorrow Stories only becasue Streetwise
slipped my mind. Might have been eligable for Graphic Novel too?
Chalk it up to serendipity though. I think this will be one of the few
catagories where I backed the winning horse.

Right, I checked and it was released 12/08/99. I received it much

having the Scrabble letters on the top of the page (page 2, mind you,

Or are you going by the publication date listed inside the book?
Like many books, this had a printed publication date that was later than

I've just checked the NCRLs for 2000. You are correct. My eligiblity checking

Right, thanks. I wanted to check in the previous issue if a title
of sorts was given, but couldn't locate it.

Published weekly in the "New Zealand Listener".

The Gangland Vertigo series finished up a couple of years ago. The TPB
came out this year, though.

Well, I didn't pick Sim only because I have not personally seen any
examples of his lettering this year. ;) I've thumbed through Cerebus
in the shops from time to time, but have never felt compelled to buy an
issue.

I chose Klien, apart from wanting to pick a real person over a font,
and I like my lettering, while have an organic feel, to be as
unobtrusive as possible. If I conciously notice the lettering, the
letter has failed IMHO.

More Than Mortal died quite a while ago. The costs to produce it overcame
what they were taking in. :( I really missed seeing them at San Diego this
year.

Too bad. It wasn't perfect, but it was interesting, and it's been
constantly improving since the first issue. I didn't pre-order (as I
have to do with all my US comics), but I gave it a try when I saw it
on newsstands and haven't regretted it.

How long did it run ? So far in France we've had More Than Mortal
#1-4, MTM: Truths & Legends #1-6, and the crossover with Laday
Pendragon. Are there more to come ? Did the story come a close, or did
it end abruptly ? What are its creators doing now ?

I didn't get any of Carl's long posts either (though I get the short pointers
and his posts). I realized belatedly I could simply go to dejanews, but
anyways.

I reformatted to add carriage returns and I think the good address for voting is

SQUIDDIES: FINAL PSEUDO-NOMINEE LIST

This is the final pseudo-nominee list for the 2000 Squiddy Awards. This
list incorporates a number of changes based on information supplied by
members of the rec.arts.comics.* community. Please note that some
eligibility rulings have changed based on new information.

The Pseudo-Nominee List compiles all creators, books, merchandise, etc.
that have received at least one vote (so far) in the Squiddy awards
balloting. Even though this is the last pseudo-nominee list that will
be posted during this year's voting, you are still free--as always--
to vote for
comics/stories/creators/etc. that are not listed below.

The purpose of these pseudo-nominee lists are three-fold:
1) to provide an informal list of "nominations" for voters who would
like their memory jogged,
2) to point out votes we've determined to be ineligible, and
3) to ask for your help in determining whether other votes
are eligible or not.

Several items in the list below have been listed as "questionable." If
you can confirm any of these items as either eligible or ineligible,
please post a reply to this post in rec.arts.comics.misc, or email us.
Based on your inputs to the first and second pseudo-nominee lists, a
number of items listed below have had their status changed.

VOTING: Ballots must be mailed by the end of the day on January 31st to be
counted.
THIS IS NOT THE BALLOT! The ballot has been posted separately, and can be found
on rec.arts.comics.info and rec.arts.comics.misc. If you can not find a copy on
either of those newsgroups, please email me at
<carl.he...@airmail.net> and I will be happy to send you one.

CHANGING YOUR VOTE: If you must change your vote--because you've
accidentally voted for something ineligible, or just HAVE to change your vote
--please don't submit a second ballot. To change your vote, email
<vo...@rzero.com>. Clearly indicate the category for which you are changing
your vote, what your original vote was, and what your new vote is. Please,
make sure that you are emailing your vote change from the same address
you voted from.

TECHNICAL NOTE: Due to ongoing nameserver problems at GraniteCanyon.com,
the normal Squiddy voting address <vo...@squiddies.org> and contact address
<ques...@squiddies.org> are both currently down. Until these problems
have been resolved, please use <vo...@rzero.com> as the voting address
and <carl.he...@airmail.net> as an address for any Squiddy-related
questions--or post your questions to rec.arts.comics.misc with a
"SQUIDDIES:" keyword.

Voting ends January 31st--and the totals in a number of categories are
still VERY close. So don't forget to vote!

specify non-fiction, it is eligible.

Thanks for the repost. This gives me a good chance to post a few final
eligiblity rulings and changes based on new information.

First an update to the "Technical Note" section:

TECHNICAL NOTE: The nameserver problems at GraniteCanyon.com have now been
fixed. The normal Squiddy voting address <vo...@squiddies.org> and contact
address <ques...@squiddies.org> are both working. However, both voting
addresses--<vo...@squiddies.org> and <vo...@squiddies.org>--will continue to
work for the remainder of the voting period. We would like to thank everyone
on rec.arts.comics.* for being so patient. Thanks also go to Todd VerBeek
(squiddies.org administrator), who provided the alternate voting address.
Please note that the squiddies.org technical problems were in no way Todd's
responsibility.

>BEST PAINTER

>Best Painter - Kyle Baker - Questionable
> [need 2000 credit]

Best Painter - Kyle Baker - Ineligible
[Last painted work "I Die at Midnight" published in 1999]

>BEST COLORIST

>Best Colorist - Dan Kemp - Questionable
> [need 2000 credit]
>Best Colorist - Tom Luth - Questionable
> [need 2000 credit]

We've now located credits for both Dan Kemp and Tom Luth. Both men are
eligible for "Best Colorist."

>BEST COVER ARTIST

>Best Colorist - Gerhard - Questionable
> [Does Gerhard do "Cerebus" cover work, too?]

We've been informed that Gerhard was the photographer on the photo covers that
"Cerebus" has been running for the last year. As the ballot definition for
"Best Cover Artist" says, "someone who did the cover art for a comic published
in 2000" and does not specify drawing/painting, Gerhard is eligible.

>BEST SHORT STORY
We've also run down the titles for several more of these short stories:

> Detective Comics #747
Detective Comics #747 "Happy Birthday Two You"

> Lucifer #4
Lucifer #4 "Born with the Dead"

> Nightwing #52
Nightwing #52 "Modern Romance"

> Powers #7
Powers #7 [no story title]

> Promethea #12
Promethea #12 "Metaphore"

> Starman #73 "Grand Guignol: Eulogy"

Listed on the cover as "Grand Guignol: Epilogue" and inside as "Grand Guignol:
Eulogy"

> Thunderbolts #39
Thunderbolts #39 "Black Hearts"

>BEST MULTI-PART STORY

>Multi-Part Story - Top 10 #1-12 - questionable
> [does this really constitute one cohesive twelve issue story?] Multi-Part

This has been ruled "eligible."

>BEST ANTHOLOGY
> Gangland
Anthology - Gangland - ineligible

[not originally published in 2000]

>BEST COMIC STRIP

>Comic Strip - Pop Vulture - questionable
> [what is this; where it it published?]

Pop Vulture (published in the "New Zealand Listener")

Please remember that the pseudo-nominee list is NOT the ballot. We've already
received several "pseudo-ballots" where people tried to use the pseudo-nominee
list as a ballot. Squiddy ballots are read by computer and can't be processed
in that form.

Copies of the ballot have been posted to both RAC.misc and RAC.info. If you
can't find a ballot, or if you are having any trouble with voting, please
email <ques...@squiddies.org>, or contact me directly at
<carl.he...@airmail.net>.

Voting only runs through January 31st. Remember to vote!

Really? Both of them? (I thought you were going to get J. to proofread)

The full list _I_ posted didn't make it back to me. Seems my newserver is
protecting me from long messages.

Of course that would be <vo...@squiddies.org> AND <vo...@rzero.com>...

I give Carl credit for not posting squiddy.org again, although he was >this<
close! ;)

A Squiddy administrator's work is never done. Can you imagine having to check
every single nomination and vote for validity? Yuk.

Somebody needs a new one. I bugged my news server administrator about missed
posts for months before I switched.

I appreciate this was first posted a while ago, but can the
administrators please confirm that my ballot made it through in at
least one of the two ways I tried?

Thanks!

Well, it sort of came to a close since it was always minis... but not really
since it was so abrupt.

As for other series...

There was MTM: Sagas which was the painted series about The Protector which
ran about the same time as Truths and Legends, and then there was MTM:
Otherworlds. It had Derdre going on a sort of adventure through the
Overworlds kind of thing, with a framework of a storyteller telling a fable
in modern times. That series was written by Brian Holguin but illustrated by
Steve Firchow.
There was also The Witchfinder spin off which gave a bit of Morand's past
mixed with some semi-historical stuff since it included Matthew Hopkins the
Witchfinder General. Sharon wrote that with the help of Robert Lugibihl on
scripting and Romano on pencils.
Phew. I'm dredging my memory :) The last thing was a bit called More Than
Mortal: Famine but it practically shut down halfway through.

I think that's it :)
As for what they're all doing now... I'm not really sure. I heard Sharon was
going back to her day job at Disney fulltime, and that Matt Scott was seeing
what else was out there in comicsland. Steve Firchow went back to coloring
at Top Cow and is now the regular colorist for Witchblade (and has been
since #40.) No idea what Romano is doing.

If you used the same email address that you post from (CL...@balJUNKcab.ch,
minus spamblock), then I have no record of it. You are welcome to try
resending it. <vo...@squiddies.org> should be working fine now, but if you
can't get through there, you are welcome to send it to my personal email
address or <carl.he...@airmail.net>.
