Welcome to Mario's musings, a slightly irreverent look at one of the comics I
bought last week. It's not a review, more like my personal observations..

OK, let's do this page by page, shall we?

Front Cover: What happened to the Thing's head? And why does Johnny have
white hair?

1: "Last half of the 1900's". I guess that puts it somewhere between 1963 and
1995...

2-3: Voltstorm, Stormsign, Homegate and Gatefinder...the newest line up at
Image? What I want to know is, who's Prawn Curry?

4: Nice transition between the "4" and the "X." A bit forced in the bottom
row tho'.

6: Cue mysterious stranger...with lots of "X" straps.

7: Gee, *another* artificial eye? Whoever he is, he's been around for at
least 75 years. Well preserved, too.

10: Now we have a name...Dust. And there's an unidentified "bad girl" in line
at the top of the page. Possibly Zealot, from WildCATS. No one else looks
familiar.

11: I want some caffiene too, most mornongs. The unfortunate fellow with the
razors reminds me of Doomsday. His treatment reminds me of Mag..nahh couldn't
be. Could it?

13: OK, Dust has PK, and knew Bishop. He's someone we know, probably. Nice
power signature, especially when he "spikes" the desk.

14: Ah, so in Halo, redshirts wear blue.

15: The bike in the lower right corner..a bahamode? [Megazone 23]

17: It's been a month since 2099 Apocalypse. People call it "Night of the
Long Knives." And the guy in the spandex looks like Daredevil.

18: "Man without fear". Yup, Daredevil 2099. Better costume than the
original's, IMHO.
19, 20, 22, 23: 2099 pinups. "A great jumping on point." Doom has looked
better, though.

28: If there was any doubt, the DD emblem appears,,but where? Middle of his
chest? On the side? Hard to tell. Nice energy baton, but there's a
misplaced ballon in the lower left. Based on the art and syntax, I'd say the
AoABishop clone is supposed to be talking.

34: Back to Dust. Our mysterious friend is a bit paranoid. Doesn't mean he's
wrong.

35: Dust is at LEAST 110 years old, and has some mental defenses. But he's
not "Ca-".

36: Storm-Richards, eh? Johnny got top billing?

38: Morphine really doesn't like Xavier much, does he...and he lights his
cigar with a picture of Doom.

39: Dust is 150 years old...since it's 2099 [still? when is it gonna be
2100?], and he's not the type to play games. He wants to see the
children...NOW.

40: He "knew 'em all". And another "Charlie don't surf" refernce.

41: They are wearing Dust's medallion...and he got it in the 1990's. Where
did these guys get it?

42: Oh goody, another mutant messiah...doesn't look like X-Nation cares.

43: Dust wasn't an X-man...

44: ...because he didn't have the guts to follow Xavier's dream. Only one of
the X-Nation listens to his sob story, though...so he's my pick for the
savior.

Short digression here...who is Dust?

We have several possibilities.

1] Franklin Richards. He's got the power, but if Dust was born in 1949, or
thereabouts, he's too young.

2] Ditto for Vance Astro. He does have a red power signature, though.

3] Cable is the obvious choice. He could easily be 50 "now", since he's
traveled through time, but he has technically "worn the X." Anyway, Cable has
a glowing LEFT eye, and Dust's RIGHT eye glows.

4] A native of Longshot's dimension. Unfortunately, Dust has the right number
of fingers....

5] Exodus. He has the power. He isn't an X-man [in this timeline]. He's
probably immortal...and he's too young.

6] Gamesmaster: A possibility, but his powers are telepathic, not
telekinetic.

7] Nate Grey, the X-Man. He's not old enough, but he's a strong possibility.
A better one, IMHO, is...

8] My choice...Magneto. Most of his tricks involve metal objects. He never
followed Xavier's dream, really. He's old enough, powerful enough, and
certainly has the right attitude. There's one flaw. Dust says "I even met
Charles Xavier once, along with Bishop and Cyclops." Magneto has met Prof. X.
many times. But Dust also said "I knew all of them." so maybe 75 years in the
desert has scrambled him a bit...

So I'd say Mags, with X-Man a close second. Back to the story...

45: "What do you want..." Warren, have you ever considered writing for babylon
5?

46: The writing on this page made me buy the book..."...when you needed it the
most, the Law...is Blind." I still shiver, reading that line.

47: The bookshelf...traditional place for artist jokes...Eldridge Cleaver,
Joyce's "Ulysses", possibly "Fall of the House of Usher", "Master & Commander"
by Patrick O'Brien [who?] books on the Tarot, women, and the post office?

Back Cover: Oh, that wasn't Johnny...similar costume, though...

So, Warren...any hints on Dust? What about DD2099, will we have to guess him
too? [I wonder if they found Jake Gallows' body..]

No, no, I'm enjoying watching you guys speculate...

I created that DD character specifically for Genesis...God knows
if he'll ever appear again. I certainly have no plans for him,
for I'm not doing any new 2099 work for the foreseeable
future.

I'm thinking more like 1906-9 =)

I didn't think that was his costume, I thought he was
intentionally silhouetted.

[possibilities snipped]

I don't think it's anybody we know, just some anonymous dude.
Remember, he said he met Cyke, Bishop and Xavier and couldn't look them
in the eye. Everybody you mentioned already has.

Pity, he looked like a grimngritty character I might actually LIKE.

What exactly is 2099 genesis? What is the storyline about? I'm out
of the loop so can someone tell me what's going on?

Well, this one kept me occupied for a good 10-15 seconds, trying to find a
white-haired Johnny on the cover. Never did, surprisingly enough! :\

|>7: Gee, *another* artificial eye? Whoever he is, he's been around for at
|>least 75 years. Well preserved, too.

Is *that* what the glowing-eye technique is supposed to show?
I always assumed it was just an external mutant manifestation ... catchy
phrase, that.
IIRC Nate Grey's left eye glows when he's using his TK, but seems perfectly
normal otherwise (sometimes he even gets actual eyeballs - an increasing
rarity in Marvel comics!)

|>18: "Man without fear". Yup, Daredevil 2099. Better costume than the
|>original's, IMHO.

I much rathered the original's, but then I'm a DD purist. :)

|>35: Dust is at LEAST 110 years old, and has some mental defenses. But he's
|>not "Ca-".

The obvious inference is that she was about to say "Cable", but I don't know
that this essentially means he isn't. She could have been intending to say
"Which one of them are you? Not Cable." (because she knew for a fact that
Cable was definitely dead) or maybe "Which one of them are you? Not Cable?"
(because so far that was the most likely possiblility). Either way, he just
avoided the question.

And I really can't think of *any* reason why she'd think he was Cannonball or
Caliban.

|>36: Storm-Richards, eh? Johnny got top billing?

Since the "personal stealth units" were invisible, I assumed that they'd been
named after Sue, although I must admit that she wasn't hyphenating her name
when last I looked, so maybe you're right.

The thing that bothered me more was that the favour involved stealing *two* of
these stealth units. One's attached to Suzanne's back - where is the other
one? We never see Mirielle wearing one, and we only see one in flight.

|>38: Morphine really doesn't like Xavier much, does he...and he lights his
|>cigar with a picture of Doom.

I didn't notice either of these until you pointed them out. Neat stuff! I've
got something of a soft spot for Morphine, but the more I see of him, the more
I wonder why ?

|>39: Dust is 150 years old...since it's 2099 [still? when is it gonna be
|>2100?], and he's not the type to play games. He wants to see the
|>children...NOW.

So he's about 45 now (in 1995). Trying to determine ages in the Marvel
universe is one of those things that can give me nightmares, but as far as I
can see this makes the vast majority of contenders too young for the role.
Of course, look at the way characters change ages and/or time periods (Cable,
Captain America, Illyana Rasputin, Franklin Richards, currently Magneto) and
in 1995 Dust could be anything from 149 to not-born-yet.

And if what I hear is correct, we're never going to see 2100 - but 2101 is
coming up real quick!

|>41: They are wearing Dust's medallion...and he got it in the 1990's. Where
|>did these guys get it?

Actually I didn't find it at all surprising that the X-Nations kids were
wearing them, but it *did* surprise me that Dust was. I missed the issue in
which it was introduced, but for the last few issues all of the X-Men (2099
version) have been wearing this insignia on their costumes. Take a look at
Shakti's costume in 2099 Genesis, or at the one page group shot of the X-Men.
I'd assumed it was because they're now the official protectorate of the mutant
city-state.

I also figured this was the reason why Shakti is so willing to take Dust at
his word after he shows her the medallion on page 35. Following on from this,
the kids presumably got their insignia from the X-Men (2099). So where *did*
Dust get his medallion from? In the 1990s when he got it the X-Men weren't
wearing Xs inside triangles, they were generally wearing Xs inside circles (if
they're inside anything at all). Why do I suspect there's a time-travel saga
involved here?

|>43: Dust wasn't an X-man...

And after all the build-up, wasn't that the let-down of the century!!!

|>44: ...because he didn't have the guts to follow Xavier's dream. Only one
of
|>the X-Nation listens to his sob story, though...so he's my pick for the
|>savior.

Naah! Too obvious! It's got to be one of the rebels who never listen to
anything, but who's converted to the way of good after seeing the selfless
sacrifice of one of his/her teammates. Isn't it a worry when *all* the options
sound like cliches. :)

|>Short digression here...who is Dust?
|>
|>We have several possibilities.

[snipped the several possibilities]

|>So I'd say Mags, with X-Man a close second. Back to the story...

Since he wasn't an X-Man, and apparently only met Xavier, Cyclops and Bishop
once I suspect one of the following possibilities :

1) We've never met him before; he's just a complete unknown who happened to be
around in the 1990s.

2) He's someone who we have met (maybe only once), but he's an obscure
character who only true Marvel historiophiles will know.

3) He's someone who we haven't met yet, but we will sometime in the future (in
his earlier incarnation, maybe even seeing the scene in which he meets
Xavier).

I really don't think Magneto is a possibility (after all, he was close friends
with Xavier, and was an X-Man for a while) *unless* the memory loss he
suffered recently turns out to be permanent. If he meets Xavier now and turns
down his offer to be an X-Man then it's possible that years later he would
regard his actions in the way Dust describes. But his powers still look a heck
of a lot different to Dust's - mainly because of the red power bursts all over
the place.

Nate Grey? The age difference doesn't bother me. If you're at all related to
the Summers clan your likelihood of experiencing time travel or other
chronological difficulties is at least twenty times that of the average
mutant. The wrong eye glows, but otherwise Dust's powers look a lot like
Nate's. I'll reserve judgement until I see Nate's future dealings with Xavier
and Co.

|>45: "What do you want..." Warren, have you ever considered writing for
babylon
|>5?

Now that's a good idea! Realistic atmosphere, skillfully sketched in
supporting cast, political intrigue, ... I can see Warren fitting right in
there.

I also rather like the idea of a Doom 2099/Babylon 5 crossover (for some
reason I'd like to see Doom and Kosh encounter each other). But let's face it,
I'd read a Doom 2099/Muppets crossover if it was written by Warren!

|>Back Cover: Oh, that wasn't Johnny...similar costume, though...

Right! The guy who *didn't* look like Johnny *wasn't* Johnny. Ha, similar
costume, indeed ... sounds like a cover up to me.

|>So, Warren...any hints on Dust? What about DD2099, will we have to guess
him

Forget Dust and DD2099! I want to know the details on Captain America 2099 !!!
