Has anyone here seen it?

In the begining of the movie, there is a quote of Yanagida
Kunio (1875-1962) who was a great folklorist and writer:
"Even in a busy town like Tokyo, I never play kakurenbo
in the night. If you play kakurenbo in the night, you would
be taken by an ogre."
It also summarizes the basic story of the movie. It's 23
minutes long. Amination is great. The architecture looks
rather Chinese or Ryuukyuu's (Okinawa) than typical
Japanese. The design of ogres/monsters also has
resemblance to that of Thai/Bali instead of Japan.
Cultural note:
In kakurenbo, a child who takes the role of seeker
is called "oni" [ogre].

...And be forced to work in a bathhouse?

Yup, got the DVD a couple of days ago.
I didn't like the film all that much - it's quite predictable, in my
opinion. It is animated quite nicely though; it's like Appleseed, all done
in cel-shaded 3D.
As a half-hour short it's not painfully bad or anything, but I've seen
better OVAs personally.

Which then leads to the best UY episode ever!

I did for TRSI was thinking of licensing it, but they
had missed the chance now and forever!

Derek I didn't realize you were so ignorant as to not have seen
the Part Time Job From Hell episode, it is one of the episodes
that stayed in my head from when I saw it as a child. Your
punishment shall be to watch volume 14 and write me a 5 page
report due tonight, TONIGHT! It is a sad state of affairs when
these young MTV watching kids with the short attention span
can't remember anything that is less than two years old, it fills
me with chagrin and trepidation.

(Or that you had somehow missed "Spirited Away" in the theaters, and
were able to somehow dodge an equally clueless, and rather obvious in
its unresearch, joke about demons spiriting kids away in ancient-looking
overly-atmosphered Japanese cities, not that I've managed to see the OVA
yet either.)

And I have the entire AE boxsets to date, to replace the raw tapes that
I've had in a place of honor since 1992.
Which is how, if you've ever wondered, that I'm able to quote *more*
than one single UY episode the minute anyone ever mentions it.
...Simply put: WE'VE *HEARD* IT!!!!!! ^0^
Please move on to Joke #4, which (looks down list) would be either the
"Bastard" ref or the "Transformers" one.

Sounds like watching on non-pay cable TV is the perfect to
see "Kakurenbo", then. Thanks!

Yes, but I didn't care about the Spirited Away reference and replaced it
with one
of my own now and forever.

That is the only reason why I still allow you to post here, know my mercy
and revere it, REVERE IT!
