We have just returned from a week at Sandos Playacar. Thought I'd let everyone know that we had a very nice week with our two girls (4 and 7). We had a one bedroom in the new Haciendas. It was beautiful. The reservations was exactly what we had asked for. The transportation from the airport to the hotel was there on time. The food was average like many resorts in Mexico. The service was fine. RE never bothered us with anything. All and all we are very happy with everything.

I’m glad to hear that everything went good.  We will be there April 9th – 16th with some friends.  I would worry less if it were just us, but when you bring friends it’s a bit different.

My husband and I will be there 4/7-4/21. We'll be bringing our
daughter (12) and her friend (10). Probably end up hanging around at
the Royal Elite pool most of the time. I'm glad to hear people have
been having a positive experience lately. Keeping my fingers crossed
all goes well for us again this year. Last year everything was just
perfect.

We will be going to Sandos Playacar for the first time in June. Long
story short we bought in Jan 08 and like many others were told a
number of things that didn’t transpire. Our biggest complaint was we
were told the Cabo property was already underway and it would be a
property that was not going to be AI. That was the only reason we
purchased. 4 weeks for one maintenance fee of $299.00. We ended up
getting the RE Exchange program and have requested two weeks for St.
Maarten next Jan. Our RCI has expired so we thought we would give
this one a try. They say they are totally different and have
different ways of getting the exchanges that are requested. We shall
see. We have given them 9 months so hopefully that is enough time to
find something....no guarantee though. I really hope the new property
acquired in Cancun will stay non AI. We have made up our minds to try
to make the best of it now and live with what we purchased. Too many
months spent being bitter and angry.....so June 9 – 16 will be our 1st
visit. We are booked in the New Haciendas and from the reviews I know
we are in for a great week. I now choose to be POSITIVE!

I understand what you mean. For two years we were bitter and angry and we finally decided to make the best of it.
Would we buy the membership again? No.
Did we have a good time while we were there last week? Yes.

We will be there 4/9-4/16. It will be me, my husband, my son and one other
couple. We will be in the ocean front rooms (at least that is what our
reservations are for.) What rooms are you going to be in? We will see you
there. Wendy

I agree also.  We bought in May of 08 and are finally going in April.  The only reason we bought was for the ocean front rooms and have made reservations 4 other times and would never get those rooms for our 2 bdrm we paid for.   Only offered studios in that section.  Even 8 months ahead of time.  So this is the only time we didn’t cancel, even though we still  only  were offered 3 studios.  Then we found out that they charge extra for the AI  or any room that is not double occupancy.  It doesn’t seen fare since if they gave us the 2 room suite that we paid for, we wouldn’t have to pay extra.  We have 4 adults and 1 child, and if we had the 2 bdrm our son could have the center living area room and we would have privacy.

So you booked 8 months ahead and still no 2 bedroom?  Isn't there a 1 bedroom OF suite available you could use for the son?  I guess we will have to sit through another presentation to find out what they say now....This time get them to write it down with signatures.  We tried to book last year at the same time in June but found an incredible deal to go to Occidental Xcarat for $765.00 cad pp from Calgary which included air, AI, transfers and taxes.  That is what made me furious when there was no possible way we could even come close to the same kind of vacation booking it directly with Sandos and what we had paid for our membership.  It was not the VIP service but we were still able to go to any of the specialty restaurants with no problems.  Darn....I said I was going to be positive..... LOL

They have broken ground on the new haciendas that are going in on the beachfront.  They are supposed to be done in the next year in half to two years.  I believe then you should not have the trouble getting Ocean front rooms or two bed room suites.  As with everything there it is wait until, but I believe you will see the light at the end of the tunnel when you are there.  You will see some progress.

I have been checking back with reservations and seeing if there is any 1 bdrm ocean view cancelations.  I would be much happier with 1 studio and 1 one bdrm, instead of the 3 studios, but they just say there isn’t any and I am on a list if any open up.  Aaron told me he would look into it for me months ago and now Gustavo said he put me on a list.  I hope Gustavo comes through for me because everyone else has just put me off.  If you want to see something really interesting, go to Vacations to go.com and at the top right hand corner click on Hotels and Resorts, then key in the dates and location and find Sandos playacar.  When you get there click on the room info. And you will see them offering 1 bdrm suites ocean front. (These rooms are only supposed to be for members)  Then go below the picture in the left hand corner and below it,  it says info & photos.  Click on that and you will see by the description of that room that it really is the 1 bdrm ocean front suite.  I told the resort on 2 different occasions about it and they  say it is just a studio, but by the description you can see that’s not true.

Interesting comment about looking for non-AI resorts. We have done
both, and actually prefer all inclusive vacations, maybe because we do
manage to drink some, which can add up on a cruise or when you are
paying for that at normal prices, but also like the fact that we know
in advance exactly what we will be spending. Why do you prefer a non
AI arrangement?

I totally agree. We prefer the AL also. We went to Belize with some
friends a few years ago and stayed in their time share for free and you
would not believe what we spent on food. For one thing it is most
convenient to eat at the resort, especially for breakfast and even that came
to 50.00 some times for 2 of us. And I don't want to talk about what the
drinks cost. We spent more than what the Al usually cost, by a long ways.

We prefer non-AI as well. We enjoy getting out and about including
renting a car for our stay. We have traveled as far south of Belize
and as far north as Holbox while staying in the Playa area most
recently at the Grand Mayan (RCI points). We enjoy the learning about
the local culture and exploring local eateries and remote beaches,
nature reserves etc. When we stay at an AI we feel tied down to the
resort in order to get our monies worth with food and beverages. We
will continue to return to Sandos Playacar but we are hoping Sandos
opens a non-AI resort like most timeshare resorts are. We are heading
to Tulum for 2 weeks in early April and look forward to miles of quiet
beach with only small boutique hotels.

When we go away we normally like to stay 2 weeks and also during peak
time. So if we go next Feb for two weeks at 116/day that is $3248.00
for food and lodging. We on the other hand are not drinkers so the
tab does not add up that way for us. We can get by with two decent
meals a day and even then if there is a fridge in the unit eat in for
breakfast, have some fruit and munchies on hand and have a nice dinner
out. It also affords to let us enjoy other activities and excursions
as Islander says. The year we bought our membership we stayed in
Cozumel that included a buffet breakfast only. That I liked. So if
the new resort in Cancun will be non all inclusive that will be my
destination of choice. If what we were told at the sales presentation
transpires then for $299.00 we could stay for 4 weeks at that resort
and live pretty good for that same amount spent for just two at the
AI. Coming to Sandos off peak is more affordable so that is how we
will probably work this from here on in.

We are also in the ocean front rooms (again at least that is what our
reservation is for)... Last year we were in the two bedroom suite
right on the end by the Royal Elite pool. I've requested that room
again, but no guarantees, which I understand... This will be our 5th
time at Sandos, and our second using our membership. Last year
everything was perfect. Everything that was promised was delivered. I
too had buyer's remorse after we returned home, but from our
experience last year, I am very happy with our purchase. Now I hope I
haven't jinxed myself!

I understand completely Q-52. We tend to use it as a complete downtime
vacation, and often do little other than sit at the beach or the pool,
so enjoy the facilities, the food, drink, etc. We might go snorkeling
or something for a day, but that is about it. We likely wouldn't go
to Sandos if we were going for a week of exploration etc. Almost
surprised you would have bought into an all-inclusive resort, given
your thoughts. To each their own though. I agree that in the end,
you have to determine what you want to do for a given vacation, and
determine total cost. If you are using a hotel as a base, and out
seeing the country, you hardly want to do that from an all-inclusive
hotel. They are obviously designed with the idea that you will spend
your time there, and likely eat three meals a day, with drinks/
beverages. We also went in peak season this year, and will likely try
not to do that next year, though still spent less money than if we had
booked a complete package through a travel agaent somewhere else.

RobertJ....We had no intentions of buying into the AI. That has been
our issue for over two years fighting with Sandos. When we were at
the sales presentation we made it perfectly clear we were not
interested in AI.... so not interested. That's when super sales
closer "Amigo" came in and told us that the Cabo resort was already
underway. The resort was going to be ready by late 08 or early 09 and
was not going to be AI. We could stay at the resort for 4 straight
weeks if we wish for our maintenance fee of $299.00. He really did a
sales job on us as you all have experienced with your own closers. We
thought we could live with that decision but then it was way past the
time frame of rescinding when we found out Cabo was not even started
and that "All Sandos properties are AI". After numerous emails and
angry phone calls Aaron finally called me back, tried to assure me
there would be properties coming on board and that in fact a property
was purchased in Cancun with renovations underway and this one was not
going to be AI. So then when I would call the RE customer
service....no one had any idea what I was talking about. The right
hand has no idea what the left is doing. We were at Sandos for just
one afternoon last year to get an update of what was happening. We
talked with the Australian couple who I believe are the managers of
the Sales dept who also told us that the new properties being built on
the beach will accommodate owners who don't want to participate in the
AI program. Should have had them put it down in writing...still
learning lessons with this outfit.
Anyway that is our story...It completely amazes me what bold faced
lies we were told all for the sake of a sale.......To RE credit they
have come through with a couple of things that are helping to iron out
our issues. We do enjoy AI vacations but that is not what we believed
we bought into.... thought we would have the either or
option.......but as I posted earlier I now choose to be positive
(after this rant) and will enjoy to the fullest what comes our way.

I'm trying my best to be positive also, but if we get there and things don't
go as planned, like our room being what it should, I will be sure to let the
sales dept. have a piece of my mind about everything (like you said, all the
lies.) I'm just hoping everything will be just great.
