Enclosures for RC2014 haven't been discussed in a while and I was wondering what neat and novel solutions are out there now.

I spotted Karl's fantastic cube case at https://www.z80.no/projects/TheCube.html

Anyone else got an interesting enclosure to showcase?

Hi All

Funny you should mention this now, I am just making a new cube :)

Spencer's enclosure is nice, but unless he is offering it as a kit not many will be able to make it (not me anyway).
With a joystick and a few action buttons, this could become a nice arcade system (Z80ctrl/BUSraider).

I will thank Tom for pointing to the blue box (can do with a paint job) which is cheap and easily available on eBay.
For the beginner, this is a good choice, but Spencer's backplanes doesn't fit, can use Steve's or mine backplanes.
I am definitely ordering a new blue box, but this will be painted.

Maybe Spencer can provide an enclosure that fit the RC2014 system.
The base must be large enough to gather for the backplane, it needs a slot on the top for accessing the CF card.
Optional there must be room for a power supply, and also a keyboard and video connection.

Cheers
Karl

Karl

If you made a version of your compact flash module (https://www.z80.no/modules/10d.html) with the cutout on the front edge, rather than the top, and the CF adapter mounted facing forward, rather than up, you could have the compact flash card accessible from the front of the case. Front access means you are free to stack junk on top of the case :-)

It is a kit! Well, most of it is, and it comes with a joystick and a few arcade buttons :) Essentially it is just a slightly modified Picade from Pimoroni https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/picade?variant=12669191848019

I've got no plans to sell the kit myself, although if there's any interest, I might be able to offer the few conversion pieces needed to modify the Pimoroni kit.

A number of years ago on eBay there were a big lot (300+) of used anti-static plastic boxes, 90mm x 120mm that were shipping containers for HP laser printer firmware upgrade kit.  I bought the whole lot cheaply and use them to keep my components.  It turns out the box is just about right to keep RC2014 size boards.  For Z80 SBC for RC2014, I cut slots with hot knife for the CF disk and serial connector like the picture below.  It is a single board Z80 computer, so I just need power from top, USB-serial adapter from the left and access to CF from the right.  This board doesn't even have the RC2014 connector installed.  It is not all that pretty, but price is right and I can stack them and control static which is particularly bad in the desert of Albuquerque New Mexico.

That sure is a cheap case.

As long as you remember to remove the anti-static foam. I once spent some time trying to debug an LCD panel with a scope before realising I had it sitting on conductive foam. I did feel silly :-)

case from an old oak floorboard, with sound card and speakers.
(sort of case anyway, more holder I suppose.)

Here's my take on a simple protective base for the RC2014 Backplane Pro, designed for a laser cutter and to maximize the support for the backplane board (for frequent board swappers).

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3569753 has all the details and design files.
