If anybody is interested, I've knocked up a simple laser cut acrylic case design for the 8 way backplane.
The .dxf file for the design is here: https://github.com/MildLeeInterested/RC2014-build.
The design includes an extra top with vent holes and an extra blank side piece.  Delete whatever you don't want to cut and modify the rest as you like.
The backplane is attached to the base plate with 3mm screws using nuts as standoffs.
The sides are not glued to allow for easy disassembly and access.  Instead, it is held together by tabs on the side pieces and the lid, with the whole lot held down by 4 screws into some long standoffs.
Some extra photos are here.

Take, hack and make and pay forward but please do not be a wanker and sell them.

I guess it's time to learn how to use the laser cutter at my hackerspace. ;)

Thank you for this!  :D

How thick is the acrylic and what laser cutter are you using?
Surely not a 2.5W diode or similar; more like a 40W CO2 I am guessing.

Hi Mike,
It's 3mm acrylic and yes, definatly not a DIY diode laser!
This was cut on the 60W LG500 cutter at our hackspace Perth Artifactory.
<spruik> If you have one nearby, I would highly recommend exploring your local hacker/maker space for resonably priced access to this type of hardware.  Ours has a number of cool toys (laser cutters, 3D printer, soldering stations, CNC machine, lathe, etc) plus events and diverse membership with lots or experience and knowledge to share.  Ours is always looking for new members! </spruik>

Hi Mild Lee,

That's excellent!  Thanks for sharing that with us :-)

I am involved with a company in the UK that supplies laser cutters (<promote> http://justaddsharks.co.uk/ </promote>), so I'll be able to knock one of these up for myself.

Thanks

Spencer
