I'm in the process of designing a number of modules for my RC2014 Z80 system. For some reason, I'm having a hel of a time finding an equivalent part for the male header used to connect the modules to the backplane. It seems that all of the ones that I'm able to find are have the support plastic reversed. The ones supplied in the kit have the plastic on the short pins while the ones that are commonly available have the plastic on the long pins.

Not sure if that makes sense to anyone...

So, does anyone that have a part number for the header?.

Thank you.

Cheers,

Thierry

For PCB layout, all you need is a 1x40 pin header component (found in pinhead in the default Eagle set). How a board is actually built up will depend on what you can find or want to use e.g. straight male header, angled, female etc.

Hi Jaime,

Thanks for the link. That's the correct part that I'm looking for. It would still be nice to have an actual part number for it.

Cheers,

Thierry

Hi Ben,

It's not the PCB design that I'm having trouble with - it's the sourcing of the actual part. The ones that I'm able to source are not correct.

While the ones provided in the kit look like this:

There's a subtle difference.

Never seem a part number for this kind of connector... The ones I have bought here in Brazil have the plastic on the short pins, but there are more than one option of pin length. It looks that every time I buy I get a different size!

Here is sample (in Portuguese) from a brazilian online store: www.soldafria.com.br/barra-de-pinos-c-48_142.html

Note that they have 14.5, 15 and 17 mm options for the right angle connector.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the info... Your point on the pin length is good. I looked at that but got no where. It's almost an 'inverted' part compared to the norm.

There are a few places near me that cater to the DIY crowd. I'm going to and have a look through their bins to see what I find, Digi-Key and Mouser had nothing.

Hi Thierry,

I don't have a part number, but just order generic "Right angle single row header pins".  The single row ones I've bought have always had the plastic part on the short (PCB) side.

However, I have searched and searched for ones with the opposite profile, ie the plastic part on the long leg, but not found any.  With double row ones, though, the plastic only seems to be on the long leg, not the short (PCB) leg.  So, this makes it impossible to mix & match single and double headers on the new 'enhanced bus' modules :-(  But if you know where I can get either of those the opposite way around, I'd be very interested.

Spencer

Hi Spencer,

That's kind of funny since I can't seem to track down the ones you used while the other version is much more common.

More research is required...

I'll let you know what I find.

Thierry

These single row headers have the plastic part on the long side like you're after Spencer: https://www.rapidonline.com/bkl-10120186-1-x-40-pin-header-2-54mm-pitch-3a-gold-plated-50-8031

I inadvertently bought a few!

I got one or two (hundred) from aliexpress https://www.aliexpress.com/item/50PCS-2-54mm-2x40-Pin-Male-Double-Row-Right-Angle-Pin-Header-Strip/32326322594.html?spm=2114.13010608.0.0.XKzLlV They work great.

You do have to remove the unwanted pins but thats a small price to get all of the extra signals.
