Is Rene Herse via Compass Bikes my only option for all silver cranks
in 50-32?

White Industries is close but they've black rings.

Suggestions?

Thanks!

TA Pro 5 Vis, as always. I hear that the new ones have a bit more gap between inside of right crankarm and spider so that modern (fatter) front derailleurs work without so much futzing.

Presumably Velo Orange will offer a 32 small ring (they only list 28 and 30 right now).  Or you can get a TA 32 to fit the Velo Orange 50.4bcd cranks
The Sugino OX801D comes stock in a 48/32 and a 50/34, but not a 50/32.  The small ring is a 74mm bcd, so you could get any number of things for that.  It is available 'all silver' but it's a very modern looking crank that you might not love.

Does it need to be a double crank? I run a Ritchey Logic 110/74
triple, with a 46 (can fit a 50) in the middle position and a 32
inner. You can find the Ritchey's used, but Sugino makes a new 110/74
crank in silver.

Do you run the chainring backwards?  A ring machined to be a big-ring has the chainring bolt recesses on the outside and the shifting surface on the inside.  Or do you run a 46 that is made to be a middle, like a half-step ring?  Or do you let the chainring bolts stick out and act like ramps/pins?  Just curious.  I run that setup with a chainguard/42/30 on a 130/74mm triple, but my 42 was meant to be a middle ring, so I run it 'frontwards'

FWIW list, I have a 46 t **inner* TA Pro 5 Vis ring, used but still vg. Combine that with a 50 outer for a nice half-stepper. Prefer to trade for a much smaller inner, say a 36 or smaller.

Tks.

Oops, that's what I get for thinking I know what I'm talking about. I
went and checked. I'm actually running outer and middle. The middle is
a 32, so my Ritchey Logic triple is one of the 94bcd ones, not the
110/74. Both rings are properly oriented.

I'm using this kind of 94 BCD setup now with an older XC Pro crank.  I've got a 46/32, but could easily have a 50 on there.  Works great.

That settles it - 94 BCD.  The perfect crank!  It allows down to a 29t and up to a ...  plenty!  Why the heck did they go to 110???  Oh yeah - and bring back the Legolas, Grant!!!

Don't discount the White crank too easily.  They are much better looking than the pictures on their web site.  The finish is a highly polished black, not the matt black we associate with mt bike & carbon cranks.  I hesitated for a long, long time because of the black rings, but after buying them I found both the looks and performance outstanding.  And the versitility is huge.  I run a 44/30 with an 11-28 nine speed cluster.  I then switched to the new Shimano Ultegra RD, which is designed for wide range, compact dbles.  This is probably the best shifting bike I have had in 30 years of riding, which includes a number of highly regarded set ups.  Here's mine:

Take a look.

44/30 and 9-speed 11-28 is a super setup.  Michael, stock up on 11-26 9-speed SRAM cassettes as well.

11,12,13,14,16,18,21,24,28
11,12,13,15,17,19,21,23,26

The 11-26 has only one 3-tooth jump to the 26.  Everything else is a 2-tooth jump, except at the 11,12,13.  That 3-tooth jump from the 18 to the 21 and back is often a place where I wish I had the smaller jumps.  I've stocked up on both the 11-28 and the 11-26.

I'm totally going to give that Ultegra derailer a look.  Which Shimano Model # is that one?

Mine is close: VO spec Sugino Alpina 48/32. Love this crank.

You managed to get a 32 on a Sugino Alpina?  I thought the Alpina was 110mm BCD, and as such only goes down to a 34 with Sugino rings and maybe to a 33 if you buy a TA ring.  My recollection of the VO Suginos was that they were all 48/34.

110 came first, followed by 94.

I believe it's the 6700SS

I agree about hoarding 9 speed cassettes.  I'm not confident Shimano  will continue to offer hi end ones.  One of my strategies has been to buy a couple of extra 11s & 12, since these are the parts most likely to wear out.

One more option.  If you like the White cranks but not the rings, then check out the DaVinci Cranks.  These are actually made by White, but are designed much like the TA, with interchangeable spiders.  You can buy the crank and either 110 or 94 spider and put whatever rings you want.  The design is low Q, and can be either a dbl or triple.  This is what I run on my Ebisu All Purpose and on my Touring Tandem.  Nice cranks, US made, less $ than TA.  I have done business with daVinci a few times and found them easy to deal with, although like RBW, they keep a tight inventory.

I just noticed that the DaVinci web site now shows the crank with black spiders.  Mine are both silver:

but I don't know if the silver spider is still available.

I didn't see 94mm spiders on the DaVinci site.  But you can go down to a 32T in 104mm BCD 4-arm, which was what the OP was about.  I think it's tricky finding 50T rings for 104mm, though.  104mm is a good option for a 48/32 double for sure.

Spiders Available
- Four Arm 104mm - 64mm
- Standard 110mm - 74mm
-Road 130mm (with 74mm triple option)
-34 tooth Spider/Chainring. This is a replaceable one piece spider/34 tooth chainring. It is lighter, less expensive (no need to buy chainrings and chainring bolts) and perfectly concentric.
