OK, I know this is stretching it, but I’m usually pretty scrupulous about staying on topic – and I’m so excited about finishing this bike that I have to share with the group. I signed up for a weeklong one-on-one frame building course (“bike camp”, to my wife, who gave it to me as a Christmas present) with Mike Flanagan at A.N.T., and made this frame (with considerable help from Mike). I finished the final build this weekend. Here it is: http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/8087111571/in/photostream
My first fixed gear, very fun but very strange feeling at first. Riv content (there really IS some): alloy Bosco bars, and Nigel Smythe Keven’s bag.

no, I'd say it's definitely on topic. Really beautiful bike.Who made the tires? I have a friend to wants to find that color for one of his older bikes.
Yup, 650B. They are Hetres, the greatest tire in the world! If your friend is looking for the same color in 700C, the SOMA New Xpress comes in the same color. It’s around 37mm, and it’s a very nice tire, too.

It was fantastic. Mike is a great teacher, and a master builder, and a great guy, too. I wasn’t particularly gifted at welding, but he walks you carefully through the process, and it’s a fair statement to say that I built the frame (with indispensable help from Mike). A couple of times when I burned through a tube at the joint, he simply saddles up the torch and repairs the hole so it barely showed, and was invisible (to me, anyway) after filing. It’s truly a soup to nuts experience – in the A.N.T Bike and Camp set on my stream, you can see a pic of the pile of tubes that became my bike, and a lot of pics of steps along the way.
The cost is high ($3,000 for the week, including great lunches!), but in my mind totally worth it, and if you want to keep building, Mike is extremely generous with post-class support. And, of course, you end up with your very own custom A.N.T. bike!

Joan:
Thanks! Did you see on Flickr that I broke down and gave my son Hank (you met him in College Park) the SimpleOne? His company has made provisions for inside storage, so he’s off and running on daily 5 mile (one way) commute. Love to get together for a ride sometime when I’m down there visiting with Hank. And you need to get signed up for Riv Rally East!

Tom - congratulations! That is an amazing bike, and an amazing experience (we talked about it a little when you visited for Grant's visit). Very impressive. It must be thrilling to ride a bike you made yourself. Thanks for all the different angle pictures
Joan
PS - I share your enthusiasm for Hetres. Got my first flat in over 2 years/3,000 miles about 2 weeks ago. Their versatility is outstanding.
