Could one of you kind folks take a few bullmoose 150 and/or 200
measurements for me? I have an old mountain bike with a pair of bull
moose that I love but that don't quite fit me. The entry price is
steep, but I see Riv lists them as discontinued (endangered?), and I'd
hate to miss out. The bars seem tricky to measure, but I think this
would work for me: from fixed point (saddle nose or whatever) C-to-C
distances to stem cap, bar center, bar ends. I'm looking for a little
more reach and sweep than my old bars without giving up any height.

Any other thoughts on the bars also welcome, but I've only heard
positives and am already familiar with the species. I really
appreciate it!

I'll post measurements this weekend.

I'm so far out of the mainstream when it comes to bar height that I don't have a general sense of normal.. but FYI...

Height is an area where the Bullmoose bar is seriously constrained relative to other RBW offerings. You may be looking for something well within its range. But the constraint is there.

I've got a Bullmoose bar cockpit that I've used in two flavors: "normal" (which to me means max'd height but is still my lowest bar) and "tall" (which means burying the bar as deeply as possible into the RBW-sold stem riser).

Given my general desire to have a very high bar, I was surprised to find that I like the normal better than the tall. My Bullmoose is the 150mm variety, which is definitely the right choice for me for the normal flavor. I don't ride it all the time; typically I prefer sitting up to leaning. When I want to lean, though, the 150mm Bullmoose is really fun. Big wide thing that lets me stretch out. Very pretty to look at from the saddle too.

With the 150mm bar, though, over time I realized the tall flavor brings the bar I have *too* close, even with the height minimized in the riser. I enjoy the upright-ness but feel a little penned in. Getting a 200mm Bullmoose and deploying it in the tall flavor is on my list of things to do. It isn't clear whether that'll make it perfect... it may be that "tall and wide" just isn't as nice as "short and wide", even if the reach is right. And as you say they are expensive and, as far as the 200mm bar goes, not casually available last time I looked. So trying 200mm Tallmoose is not high on my list right now. (Bosco is! Is it "late May" yet?)

By the way, you did me a huge favor without realizing it. Your canti-Rom picture in Cyclofiend's gallery showed me the Nitto R-15 for the first time. "That is the rack I want!", said I. I've enjoyed that rack ever since (and apparently have remembered your name!). Thanks!

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

Thanks for all the great info, Thomas! I do have one of the stem risers and will mull over those possibilities, too. I understand just what you mean by the "penned in" feeling. That's the problem I have with the original Nitto bullmoose with short extension. Also glad the cyclofiend photos came in handy. The R15 "Funny Boy" rack is under appreciated--so versatile and finely made. One of the best racks for the haphazard lashing I tend to do.

i have a pair that i just listed on ebay with a low starting price,
200mm.
i think the longer ones are perfect. the reach at the end of the bar
is more like 7-8cms. the extra length at the front is really nice for
laying low and digging into a headwind.

Joe,

I have one of each.

for 150:
bar width is ~67cm
max reach is ~16.5cm center to center measured horizontally from the
extension of the quill axis (long hex wrench).
reach at bar end is ~1cm
extensions are ~16cm long and 17cm apart at the bars
Max rise ~16cm along quill axis from the top of the headset to the top
of cork bar tape.

for 200:
bar width is~70cm
max reach is ~22cm
reach at bar ends ~6cm
extension tubes are ~21cm long and are about 20cm apart at the bar.
Max rise is more than for the 150s due to longer quill and longer
extensions but I don't have them at max hight so I didn't get a
measurement.

On both sizes the plane of the extensions is at ~110deg to the axis of
the quill.
The sweep of the bars is basically flat (meaning horizontal)

I liked the 150 a lot, but I like to lean forward when climbing hard
and I wanted more reach in that situation.
Overall I am happier with the 200 and it seems like a good fit for me,
though I am thinking about trying out the new bubar.

Hope that helps some.

I have 2 sets of the 150mm bullmoose bars; green (on my Bombadil) and
silver (to go on my SimpleOne). I have long been a fan of the
original bullmoose bars from the mid-80s, but these Riv Nitto bars
(with their unique combo of longer reach and sweep) have really grown
on me and are clearly my favorite... They instill confidence in
virtually any riding situation, preparing me for any type of
unexpected road/trail hazard.

I'm excited to be setting up my S1 as a freewheel/fixie combo (with
fat tires and moose bars to boot!)... Wow, I never imagined.
