Need someone who owns a HIllborne who can tell me what the real
standover is on the 56cm. Called Riv and was told that it would be a
bit too big for someone with a 84cm pbh but have heard from other
people that it should be fine with just a few cm clearance. I ride a
58cm raleigh international right now but wanted to move up to
something more sturdy for a bigger guy. I was also thinking of the San
Marcos in 54cm but not sure if that can support 240lbs of my fat ass.
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm an 87, and I owned a 56 Sam.  With Jack Browns I found the standover to be right at the 83.4 they claim.  I can't see a particular reason a true 85 would have a problem with a 56 Sam, especially considering Grant himself ran a 60 Sam for a while with few complaints or issues besides that it looked odd.  He's an 85, too, if memory serves.

I sold my 56 Sam to help pay for a 58 Atlantis, so I can run even fatter tires.

I had a 56 Sam.. and I've got an 84.5 pbh.. standover wasn't a problem on the Sam, and I'm long-waisted so the tt fit was pretty good too (i'm about 5'11). This was with 40mm Schwalbe Mara Supremes.

For comparison, a 52 Bombadil, 59 Canti-Rom, and a 58 SimpleOne all fit better than the 56 Sam.

best,
andrew

I have a PBH of 82.5 and am 5' 10" and have a 56cm Hillborne.  I don't have a lot of clearance
but I like the fit I have on it and I love the relaxed geometry.  By the way I'm about the same weight as you also.
I think a 56 would fit you fine....

I have a PBH of 84.5 and the 56cm Hillborne fits me perfect.  MAYBE the top tup is a little long and I should've purchased a shorter stem. (currently use a 9cm stem with 46cm noodles).
I had been riding it with 37mm Panaracer Pasela's but a few months ago switch to Schwalbe Dureme 50's to see if they would fit.  Naturally, I had to lose the fenders, but indeed they do fit.  The huge tires brought the top tube up very very close, but I can still straddle the bike with just a bit of room.  And, I wear very low shoes like, vans or cons.
So...
with a PBH of 84 you should totally fine as long as you don't go bigger than 40mm tires.

You should be fine. I have an 83 PBH and ride a 56cm Sam with 40mm
slicks or 42mm semi knobbies, even on rough single track. Plenty of
crashes and dismounts, and no damage to the tender bits (yet).

The advantage is that I can get drop bars high enough to mount a stem-
mounted child seat (Bobike mini).

I have a PBH of 84.5 (5' 10" 165) and a 56 Sam. My Sam is a great
bike. I rode the 52 and it felt a little small. I am mostly riding on
road although I have had the Sam on a few fire trails and it is great.

There was some debate at Riv HQ about sizing as 84 -85 is the tipping
point between the two sizes. If you are set on 700 tires then you want
the 56. If you want 650B and more standover then 52.

In my case bigger felt better.

Awesome, now just have to sell a couple of bikes because my wife says 5 bikes living inside is the limit for an apartment in brooklyn....

I'm riding Andrew's old Sam now. PBH of 82.5 and 5' 10'. Not a whole
lot of clearance, but not problem at all. Ride is very comfortable.

maybe more importantly than pbh and standover, i have 56 sam, one of
the earlier models that has a shorter top tube, i think 57. anyway. i
have a saddle height of 756mm and a reach of 53 cm and the fit on the
bike is perfect with noodles and a 9cm stem.

Another data point here.
I've got a 56 cm Sam and a PBH ~86.
I wouldn't mind a bit more clearance.
If I were an 84 I'd want to try the 54.

PBH 82.5: the 56 was just a touch big but doable; a 54 would be
perfect (doesn't exist), so the 52 was fine. Seems like at 84, 56'd
be ideal.

FWIW I too have a pbh of 84 and ride a 52 sam with delight. Thought
About needing a bigger frame but am often happy with the top tube
clearance especially
in trails.
